1
Speaking English on the phone is a different kind of scary.
2
You can't see the other person's face, you can't read their expression, and if you freeze, the silence is right there in your ear
3
and it's even more awkward than in a real conversation when it's face to face.
4
That's why we do this challenge.
5
7 days, 7 real life conversations shadowing every day.
6
Shadowing means you speak the words at the exact same time as the characters speaking.
7
Same rhythm, same pace.
8
You speak with them, not after them.
9
It trains your mouth to keep moving even when your brain wants to pause.
10
Today is day 5 and today we're making a phone call to a restaurant.
11
You're calling to make a reservation, the time you want is not available, and you have to think on your feet and work something out.
12
Phone calls in English feel harder than face to face because you have no visual cues and no escape from silence.
13
So this one is great practice.
14
Here are the words and phrases you need to know first.
15
To make a reservation.
16
To make a reservation means to book a table at a restaurant ahead of time.
17
It is the phrase you will use every time you call.
18
Next, "party of".
19
"Party of" is how restaurants refer to the size of your group.
20
So if they ask how many, you might say a "party of four", meaning four people dining together.
21
Then, "availability".
22
"Availability" means whether something is free or open at a particular time.
23
Asking do you have availability on Friday is another way of asking if they have a free table that day.
24
Next, fully booked.
25
When a restaurant is fully booked, it means every table for that time has already been reserved.
26
And there's nothing left.
27
Then, waiting list.
28
A waiting list is what restaurants use when they are fully booked.
29
They take your name and contact you if a cancellation comes in.
30
Next, indoor and outdoor seating.
31
Indoor seating is inside the restaurant and outdoor seating is outside, usually on a terrace or patio.
32
Most restaurants will ask which you prefer when you book.
33
Then dietary requirements.
34
Dietary requirements are any specific food needs someone in your group has.
35
An allergy, an intolerance, or a choice like being vegetarian or vegan.
36
Next, to note something down, when someone notes something down, they are writing it in their records.
37
So when the restaurant says "I will note that down", they are making sure your details are saved.
38
Then, Confirmation.
39
A confirmation is a message, usually a text or email, that proves your booking went through and gives you the details in writing.
40
And finally, occasion.
41
An occasion is the reason for your visit.
42
A birthday, an anniversary, a work dinner.
43
Restaurants sometimes ask so they can add a small personal touch.
44
By the way, before we shadow today's call, I want to talk about something that becomes really important the second you're on the phone.
45
The person is on the other side and can't see your face.
46
They can't read your lips.
47
All they have is your sound.
48
So if your pronunciation is off, even a little, the communication can just break.
49
That happened to me a lot when I first moved to the US, still happens when I'm tired and I'm mispronouncing things.
50
I say something and they just go: Sorry?
51
not because my English was bad, but because the sounds weren't landing.
52
That's why we built the Pronunciation Hacking course.
53
It's not about losing your accent.
54
Your accent is part of who you are.
55
It's about making sure every word you say comes out clear enough that the other person never has to ask "sorry" again.
56
The course breaks down the specific English sounds that don't exist in most other languages.
57
The th, the r, the schwa, the linking, the word stress, the things that, conversations suddenly easier.
58
You also get exercises you can do for five minutes a day with audio you can shadow.
59
The link is in the description.
60
Now let's get into today's conversation.
61
Hi there.
62
Good evening.
63
Good evening, Olive and Vine.
64
How can I help you?
65
I am hoping to make a reservation for this Saturday.
66
Is that something you can help me with?
67
Of course, I would be happy to.
68
How many people will you be dining with?
69
There will be six of us.
70
And what time were you thinking?
71
We were really hoping for 8 o 'clock, if that is possible.
72
Let me check availability for Saturday, At eight for six people, one moment, Unfortunately, we are fully booked at 8 o 'clock on Saturday.
73
I'm sorry about that.
74
Oh, that is a shame.
75
What about 7 :30?
76
Or anywhere in that range?
77
7 :30 is also fully booked, I'm afraid.
78
I do have availability at 6 :45 and then the next slot after that would be 8 :45.
79
6 :45 is quite early for our group.
80
Is there genuinely nothing between 7 :00 and 8 :30?
81
Actually, hold on.
82
I have just had a cancellation come through for 7 .15.
83
It literally just came in.
84
Would that work for you?
85
7 :15 would actually be perfect.
86
Yes, let us go with that.
87
Wonderful.
88
Now, for a party of six at 7 :15, that would be one of our larger tables.
89
Can I ask, will you be wanting indoor or outdoor seating?
90
We do have a terrace.
91
What is the weather forecast looking like for Saturday?
92
I honestly have no idea.
93
I wish I knew.
94
We are expecting it to be dry but quite cool in the evening.
95
Most of our outdoor guests this time of year do end up moving inside after a while.
96
I would probably suggest indoor to be safe.
97
Indoor is fine.
98
Yes, let us do that.
99
Perfect.
100
Can I take a name for the reservation?
101
Yes, it is Carter C -A -R -T -E -R.
102
Carter Lovely.
103
And a contact number? Of course.
104
It is 077 -009 -00462.
105
Got that?
106
Do any of your party have dietary requirements we should be aware of?
107
Yes, two of us are vegetarian and one person has a serious nut allergy.
108
I really want to make sure that gets flagged clearly.
109
Absolutely.
110
I am noting it down right now.
111
two vegetarians, and one severe nut allergy.
112
"Our kitchen is very thorough with allergies, and the chef will be briefed before you arrive." That is really reassuring, thank you. Of course.
113
One more thing.
114
Can I ask, is this for any special occasion?
115
It is actually a birthday dinner.
116
My friend is turning 30.
117
Oh, how lovely.
118
I will add that to the booking.
119
We always try to do something small for birthdays.
120
Nothing is guaranteed, but we like to make it feel special.
121
That is so kind.
122
And will I receive a confirmation of some kind?
123
Yes, you will get a confirmation text within the next hour to the number you gave me.
124
And we do ask that if anything changes and you cannot make it.
125
we can release the table.
126
Absolutely.
127
Of course, that is completely fair.
128
Brilliant.
129
So to confirm, table for six this Saturday at 7 :15.
130
Under Carter, two vegetarians, one serious nut allergy, birthday dinner, indoor seating.
131
Is there anything else I can help with?
132
No, I think that covers everything.
133
Thank you so much.
134
You have been incredibly helpful.
135
It is my pleasure.
136
We look forward to seeing you all on Saturday.
137
Have a lovely evening.
138
Goodbye.
139
You too.
140
Thank you.
141
Goodbye.
142
Now it is your turn.
143
The conversation will play again, and this time say the customer's words out loud at the exact same time you hear them.
144
Same pace.
145
Do not wait.
146
Here we go.
147
Hi there.
148
Good evening.
149
Good evening, Olive and Vine.
