1
Hello hello hello everybody my name is Steve Ford welcome to English for 30 days this is lesson 9
2
and I've got a great lesson prepared for you so stay tuned
3
so in case you're new to my channel you can subscribe you can also smash
4
that like button to support my work today we're going to be working on we're going be studying
5
and having some fun with the topic of family.
6
Everybody's got a family, right?
7
You have a family, I've got a family, everybody's got a family.
8
And we're going to talk about some very common words with family, also with food, that many people,
9
even advanced speakers of English, often confuse.
10
So let's go.
11
Your mother's sister, it can also be called what?
12
Well, do you think you would say aunt
13
or aunt now a lot of my students will read
14
that as aunt that's not right for north americans maybe some north americans might pronounce it like
15
that but it's an exception
16
so you want to remember this is a big tip for from me to you is that when we pronounce
17
the a n sound it is extremely nasal so
18
when you think of ant i want you to think of sheep because that's how you want to pronounce it.
19
Ant.
20
Ant.
21
Ant.
22
Ant.
23
Yeah, you got it.
24
Ant.
25
Now, one of my students, she likes when English is simple, and I totally understand.
26
And a curiosity, maybe you didn't know this, is that the pronunciation of ant, your mother's sister, is the same as this guy here.
27
That's also aunt.
28
So aunt, aunt.
29
Those are homonyms.
30
They're exactly the same in pronunciation.
31
Now you could also have your dad's brother, your mom's brother.
32
That would be, and in this case we would say uncle, uncle.
33
So I would like I'd like you to try to think of words that have similar vowel sounds to uncle.
34
So what can I think of?
35
Sung?
36
Hmm.
37
Kung Fu?
38
Oh, hiya!
39
Maybe your uncle knows kung fu?
40
What happens is a lot of people think that your uncle, that this guy here, is pronounced like ankle.
41
But it's not.
42
Your ankle, that's a bit of a different sound.
43
So that's more like sang, rang, bang, ankle.
44
Ung, uncle, ang, ankle.
45
Now in my case I don't have kids but I do have Charlie.
46
And for Charlie I'm his and we would say, what do you think?
47
We would say dad.
48
This reminds me of a story
49
when my wife first came to Canada she was afraid of what to call my father
50
because when you're married you call your spouse's father this here
51
and she was afraid
52
that she was gonna say this here she was terrified yeah
53
she was always oh my gosh i'm afraid to say it i'm afraid to say it
54
so we would say dad now that is classic a pronunciation in north american English
55
and you will see
56
that the standard pronunciation is a very open a ah ah look how wide my mouth is opening ah
57
so we would say dad compare that to dead that's a much shorter sound debt and
58
other words that rhyme with dead bed
59
so just like we have dad in bad you could have dead
60
and bed two different questions are you dad are you dead this next one here the children
61
of your uncle we would call those your cousin yeah be careful not to call that cuisine cuisine
62
which is a nice word to say like a very sophisticated fine kind of dining cuisine
63
cuisine cousin so totally different always try to think of vowel sounds
64
that are similar so cousin cut cupboard butter compared
65
that to to cuisine that's a loan word from French
66
and we try to preserve the pronunciation a little bit cuisine cuisine quit quick
67
so I'm gonna give you a few more because speaking of cuisine
68
when we're talking about food
69
and it's all too common for my intermediate students especially sometimes advanced students to confuse to mix up this
70
and this so this is chicken and this is kitchen
71
so you want to be careful that it's a chicken in the kitchen and not a kitchen in the chicken.
72
Of course, when you're in the kitchen, you're probably looking at night.
73
A lot of people, they open the fridge, look around, see what they want to eat.
74
And then what would we say here?
75
You can see in the fridge, in this picture here, one thing.
76
In this picture, another thing.
77
So here, snacks in the fridge, and here, snakes in the fridge.
78
It's your choice.
79
I'm going with this one.
80
I'm going with snacks in the fridge.
81
How about you?
82
Of course, another classic one, one I've mentioned in many of my videos, is he's got a big Coke, or he's got a big cock.
83
Hmm.
84
So going back to that fridge, this is another thing
85
that a lot of my students will mix up there's a beer in the fridge
86
and there's a bear in the fridge
87
so once again try to think of similar words that rhyme
88
so beer fear here compare that with bear care hair okay everybody I hope
89
that you enjoyed this lesson talking about words
90
which we often confused in English many people confused
91
that are related to family and food so many and I hope
92
that you had fun as much fun as I did doing this video

Was du mit diesem Clip erreichen wirst: Fließender sprechen in 30 Tagen!

  • "That's a big tip for you" – Das ist ein toller Tipp für dich (perfekt für Lernkonversationen)
