1
May the peace of the Lord be with you all.
2
As we bring to you the readings of today's Holy Mass.
3
Come, let us now listen to the Word of God.
4
May 27, 2026.
5
Wednesday of the 8th week in Ordinary Time.
6
A reading from the first letter of Peter.
7
Beloved, you know that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your ancestors,
8
not with perishable things like silver or gold,
9
but with the precious blood of Christ,
10
like that of a lamb without defect or blemish.
11
He was destined before the foundation of the world,
12
but was revealed at the end of the ages for your sake.
13
Through him you have come to trust in God,
14
who raised him from the dead and gave him glory,
15
so that your faith and hope are set on God.
16
Now that you have purified your souls by your obedience to the truth so that you have genuine mutual love,
17
love one another deeply from the heart.
18
You have been born anew,
19
not of perishable but of imperishable seed,
20
through the living and enduring word of God.
21
For all flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass.
22
The grass withers, and the flower falls,
23
but the word of the Lord endures forever.
24
That word is the good news that was announced to you.
25
The Word of the Lord Responsorial Psalm The response is
26
Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem Praise the Lord,
27
O Jerusalem Praise your God,
28
O Zion For He strengthens the bars of your gates,
29
He blesses your children within you Praise the Lord,
30
O Jerusalem He grants peace within your borders,
31
He fills you with the finest of wheat He sends out His command to the earth,
32
His word runs swiftly Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem!
33
word to Jacob, his statutes and ordinances to Israel.
34
He has not dealt thus with any other nation,
35
they do not know his ordinances.
36
Praise the Lord!
37
Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem!
38
The Son of Man came to serve,
39
and to give his life a ransom for many.
40
A reading from the Holy Gospel, according to Mark.
41
The disciples were on the road,
42
going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them,
43
they were amazed, and those who followed were afraid.
44
He took the twelve aside again and began to tell them what was to happen to him,
45
saying, See, we are going up to Jerusalem,
46
and the Son of man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes,
47
and they will condemn him to death,
48
then they will hand him over to the Gentiles,
49
they will mock him, and spit upon him,
50
and flog him, and kill him,
51
and after three days he will rise again.
52
James and John, the sons of Zebedee,
53
came forward to him and said to him,
54
Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.
55
And he said to them,
56
What is it you want me to do for you?
57
And they said to him,
58
Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.
59
But Jesus said to them,
60
You do not know what you are asking.
61
Are you able to drink the cup that I drink,
62
or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?
63
They replied, We are able.
64
Then Jesus said to them,
65
The cup that I drink you will drink,
66
and with the baptism with which I am baptized,
67
you will be baptized, but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant,
68
but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.
69
When the ten heard this,
70
they began to be angry with James and John.
71
So Jesus called them and said to them,
72
You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lorded over them,
73
and their great ones are tyrants over them.
74
But it is not so among you,
75
but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant,
76
and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all.
77
For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve,
78
and to give his life a ransom for many.
79
The Gospel of the Lord.
80
Gospel Reflection How often do we fail to grasp the suffering of others,
81
consumed instead by our own concerns?
82
This was the struggle of the twelve as Jesus prepared to endure his passion.
83
Today's Gospel presents the third time Jesus clearly told them about his passion and death,
84
yet they still didn't get it.
85
After Jesus revealed his passion for the first time,
86
Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.
87
In the presence of the other disciples,
88
Jesus responded, Get behind me, Satan.
89
For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.
90
C.F.
91
Mark 8 verses 31 to 33.
92
The second time Jesus revealed his passion they did not understand the saying,
93
and they were afraid to question him.
94
Instead, they engaged in a childish conversation,
95
discussing among themselves on the way who was the greatest, C.F.
96
Mark 9 verses 30 to 37.
97
Today's gospel, presenting the third time Jesus revealed his passion,
98
depicts a similar scenario.
99
Jesus is very explicit, in Jerusalem,
100
he will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes,
101
and they will condemn him to death,
102
then they will hand him over to the Gentiles,
103
they will mock him, and spit upon him,
104
and flog him, and kill him,
105
and after three days he will rise again.
106
Once again, despite the seriousness of Jesus' revelation,
107
James and John immediately asked Jesus,
108
grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left,
109
in your glory, Mark 10 verse 37.
110
The apostles were so consumed with their own ambitions
111
that they failed to grasp the gravity of Jesus' words and were unable to offer him the charity of empathy.
112
Fortunately for them, and for us, Jesus had perfect patience.
113
He understood their weaknesses and showed mercy.
114
Humanly speaking, the disciples could have offered him the charity of human empathy and compassion,
115
walking more firmly with Jesus toward his agony and death,
116
but they were unprepared and unable to do so.
117
While the apostles failed to console Jesus,
118
his mother consoled his sacred heart.
119
With her immaculate heart in perfect union with his,
120
the Blessed Mother modeled perfect empathy as she pondered her son's life in her heart
121
and stood faithfully at the foot of the cross.
122
She walked with Jesus every step of the way.
123
Her love consoled him even as the twelve failed to do so.
124
The Blessed Mother teaches us how to accompany,
125
with love and presence, those who suffer.
126
We must see ourselves in the apostles,
127
listening to Jesus share news of his passion.
128
As we consider their apathy and lack of understanding,
129
we should seek the grace of a loving and empathetic heart by seeing our Lord present in those around us,
130
especially family, who carry heavy burdens.
131
This grace will enable us to be attentive to those burdens
132
and better imitate our blessed mother who consoled the heart of her son.
133
Though the apostles initially failed in this mission,
134
they were learning and growing.
135
Empowered by the Holy Spirit,
136
they would later console others by sharing Christ's love and proclaiming his passion with courage,
137
especially as they lived it.
138
Reflect today on Jesus' interaction with his apostles.
139
Learn from their shortcomings and be grateful for Jesus' patience.
140
Pray for the grace of an empathetic heart,
141
for this virtue enables us to console the heart of Christ by sharing in his passion with attentiveness and compassion.
142
In doing so, we imitate the perfect love of the Blessed Mother,
143
who teaches us how to truly love.
144
Let us pray.
145
My patient Lord, though you desire to fully share your life and passion with me,
146
I often fail to be attentive and to see you in those around me.
147
Grant me the grace to meet you in your sufferings,
148
and fill my heart with the charity of human empathy,
149
especially for those I am called to love.
150
May I learn from the weakness of the apostles and the perfect love of your blessed mother,
151
imitating her unwavering love for you and for all.
152
Jesus, I trust in you.
153
Amen.
