1
What's up, everyone?
2
All right.
3
In today's episode, I'm going to walk you through the leading gainers in the market this morning.
4
I'm going to share with you my trades from the morning, and I'm going to give you my outlook for the rest of the day.
5
Right now, I am up 2 ,342 cents today.
6
That's right.
7
2 ,342 cents.
8
That translates to $23 .42 in dollars.
9
I've decided I'm going to start calculating my gains just in pennies, in cents.
10
total sense um certainly feels like a bigger accomplishment than 23
11
and just for the 42 cents um we're in a pretty slow market well you know
12
that um i've missed a couple days
13
this week out on monday for jury duty was back on tuesday
14
i didn't miss much on monday looked at the scanners
15
didn't feel like i missed much tuesday got one trade six cents a share 10 000 shares was up 600 bucks.
16
Wednesday was out.
17
My mom's not feeling well, so it was with her.
18
Today, I'm back.
19
Two trades.
20
Couldn't make any real progress.
21
$1 ,100 red on one, $1 ,100 green on the other.
22
Up $23 .42.
23
Tomorrow, it's Friday.
24
It's the end of the week.
25
Companies are not inclined to put out good news at the end of the week.
26
You know that.
27
They're more inclined to put out bad news, so you forget about it over the weekend.
28
The funny thing is, even good news in this market is being interpreted.
29
Well, it's not even that it's being interpreted negatively.
30
It's that it's not enough.
31
So we're having companies that are coming out with actual news, and the stock is going up, and they're doing a full round trip like GIXI.
32
Now, I made money on this one.
33
This one, I was able to get a little profit on.
34
It's an Israeli company.
35
They put out a headline.
36
And it's sort of remarkable to me how the same exact
37
headline in a different market could have produced a 100 200 percent gain
38
but in this market the sentiment is just it's so weak
39
that traders are afraid to jump in and shorts are so aggressive
40
so on this one um i broke the ice um my first trade on it was actually at four dollars
41
and 83 cents right down here for the break of five
42
so i got in pretty early in this move we got
43
this little squeeze we got to move the way up to six dollars
44
and ten cents but i trade with small size
45
which is the right move in this market
46
so small size small gains ends up coming all the way back down
47
then um at this point
48
it's not even a leading gainer the leading gainer in the market right now is stack s -t -a -k
49
and this stock is
50
so thickly traded um the level two is dare
51
i say stacked stacked with buyers stacked with sellers the thing
52
it's just a grinder it's not going to move quickly at all
53
it's got 34 million shares of volume against a 19 million share float so it's a 2x float rotation almost
54
um but you can see it's just so it's just
55
so thickly traded the thing doesn't want to pull away
56
so you're not really going to get breakouts on it more
57
or less you got to move after hours
58
and then the rest of the time has been pretty much within this range it's pretty much sideways anyways, it's just not up enough.
59
Traders aren't excited about it, so it's not happening.
60
Traders being excited, that feels important.
61
Traders need to be excited.
62
They need to have optimism.
63
They need to think about the potential of a stock.
64
Right now, traders are fearful.
65
They're worried that, oh no, I'm going to get caught in another round trip.
66
I'm going to get caught in another flush.
67
And so that fear becomes contagious.
68
Other traders feel that fear.
69
They also kind of hunker down and stop trading with bigger size shorts, sort of smell the blood in the water, the sharks of the market.
70
And they think, all right, here we go.
71
This is time to lean in.
72
And so they get more aggressive.
73
And all of a sudden, the pendulum swings from momentum being in the hands of the
74
bulls to the price action really being in the hands of the bears.
75
So as we sit right now, we're in a cold cycle.
76
Well, how do we break out of that cold cycle?
77
Ultimately, breaking out of that cold cycle requires one of a couple different things to happen.
78
Number one, you either have a stock that puts out good news, the price initially pops up,
79
it drops down, and then it rallies back up because the underlying news is actually so good, traders see it, and they buy up that dip,
80
and then you get a big move.
81
Number two, you end up with a stock that randomly puts in a 500%,
82
600%, 700 % move, and then that creates a catalyst for more momentum.
83
The problem with number two is that we've already seen that.
84
We had that a bit last week with MNDR.
85
We had it with JBDI.
86
And although they popped up and on those individual days did put in pretty big moves,
87
ultimately, because they've come back down, as you can see.
88
They haven't really left us with a strong sense of excitement, greed, or fear on the short seller side in the market.
89
So that wasn't enough, unfortunately.
90
Yes, you've got one move there, which if you traded it, you did well on it, hopefully.
91
But beyond that, just sort of one move, it didn't create lasting momentum or sympathy momentum, as we'd like to call it.
92
So as we sit here now, we kind of are back to number one, which is waiting for a stock with genuinely such good news
93
that it's able to shake off that initial bear rate of short sellers hitting it hard, and it rallies up and continues higher.
94
As we know, we're contending with a bit of a headwind right now.
95
The S &P 500, big picture in the market.
96
So S &P 500 right now, well, I'll look at the daily chart instead of the five -minute.
97
Daily chart, the market's up at the all -time highs.
98
And so on the one hand, you're like, the market's at all -time highs.
99
Why are we, you know, why does it feel bearish?
100
We're not in a bear market like the S &P.
101
And you're right, we're not.
102
The market's at all -time highs.
103
And yet, when the market's at all -time highs, as it was, let's see, back in here, there's often fear.
104
And the fear is that we're already up so high.
105
Can we really go higher?
106
And what's adding to that fear right now?
107
Inflation came in above expectations.
108
We've got the midterm elections, which people are anxious about.
109
Change.
110
Is that going to be a good change or a bad change?
111
Will there be change?
112
We don't know.
113
Change, change.
114
Then number three, the AI speculation.
115
You know, we've seen a semiconductor, some of the semiconductor stocks starting to dip down a bit.
116
So SOXL, the semiconductor long ETF, you know, is down off its peak in June.
117
Okay.
118
Obviously, you've got Michael Burry and all these people who are like, oh, the bubble's going to burst, the bubble's going to burst.
119
This is the short ETF.
120
So above 55, you know, do we end up seeing that move higher?
121
I don't know.
122
From a technical perspective, those are critical levels.
123
But I think that there's a number of things in
124
that nature that are creating some hesitancy among traders in the larger markets.
125
And that's trickling down to small caps.
126
oil.
127
You know, oil is up.
128
It's very expensive right now.
129
And that is weighing in on inflation.
130
And so, you know, if anything, oil feels like we're sort of in a position where we're about to,
131
you know, push up potentially quite a bit.
132
So that could be influenced by the midterm elections, potentially how those go.
133
That could change some of our foreign policy or rein in some of the things that have been happening.
134
But there's a bit of uncertainty right now.
135
So it's right now, November, sorry, December.
136
What am I talking about?
137
October 22nd.
138
So we've got the election about two weeks away.
139
And, you know, so I would say the next two weeks are probably going to be a bit of a wash,
140
with the exception of some one -hit wonders, stocks that kind of randomly put in a one, 200 % move.
141
I think what we kind of need to have happen, if I'm going to be honest, is I think we need a market to pull back.
142
I think we need a good pullback like we had back here in March that can then give way to a rally.
143
Because this was my best month of the year, right there, May and June into July.
144
So now we're kind of top heavy.
145
Let's get that dip.
146
Let's let the market dip down.
147
And then the dip buyers come in.
148
And now off that dip, you have a level of support and then a new sort of round of momentum comes in.
149
Buyers feel comfortable jumping in.
150
Buyers don't feel comfortable jumping in the market priced way up here.
151
It's just, I mean, I get that.
152
I understand that.
153
Now you might say this is different from small caps.
154
You're sort of talking about two different things at the same time.
155
And on the one hand, you're right.
156
The small cap market can be very strong, even when the overall market is weak. That has happened.
157
We have had those periods.
158
This doesn't happen to be one of them.
159
This happens to be one where there's a tighter correlation.
160
And I don't know why it's always like that, why sometimes it's closely correlated and other times less so.
161
But right now, we just have to accept that we're not seeing the big percentage gainers that we are accustomed to seeing.
162
And so the best choice is to reduce size, be more conservative.
163
I mean, you can see my share size.
164
This is a 6 ,000 share position.
165
Two months ago, I was doing 60 ,000 shares on every trade
166
so i'm trading with like a tenth of what i would normally trade with and
167
you might argue that well ross you know you're consistent
168
and profitable over long periods of time just trade with the
169
same share size every day why you know why why size up
170
but also why size down just keep it very neutral here's the problem with that in a really hot market there's
171
such big moves that if i didn't increase my size
172
and increase my risk when my edge was stronger I would be leaving money on the table.
173
That's a fact.
174
On the other hand, when the market is really cold, volume declines.
175
Liquidity dries up, which means even if I wanted to take big share size, I would get a lot more slippage.
176
So my edge becomes a little bit weaker.
177
I don't have quite as high of accuracy.
178
My winners aren't as big.
179
And so it logically makes sense
180
that I would reduce my share size
181
it seems um a little significant to go from 60 000
182
shares down to six back up to 60 maybe up to a hundred thousand
183
or 150 000 and then you know six months later it's a cold mark
184
and i'm back to six thousand shares
185
but i have really found in my career that you have to strike
186
while the iron's hot be as aggressive as for me
187
i'm as aggressive as i pretty much possibly can be up
188
to the limit where I'm getting too much slippage on my orders.
189
And so that's where I hit the point of diminishing returns.
190
So I want to be right up against that limit.
191
And in 2020 and 2025, with incredible amounts of volume in the market, that limit was...
192
I mean, I don't even think I was hitting it on a lot of my trades.
193
I think I could have gone even heavier.
194
What actually ended up stopping me was my risk tolerance
195
and my fear of loss with a 200 ,000 -share position taking a you know two hundred thousand dollar loss
196
or something like that so all right so that's like i came up against
197
that ceiling but um but in any case uh right now with the market cooling off um
198
this is just the right thing to do
199
and this is the reality of being a trader is
200
that we have hot periods and we have slow periods and
201
when it's slow you've got to kind of batten down the hatches
202
and this is the part of me that like really relates to this kind of new england you know
203
living in new england it feels like you've got a short summer
204
and you're spending a lot of it thinking about getting ready for winter making sure your firewood is cut
205
and split and stacked and you know making sure everything is put away
206
and buttoned up for the winter
207
and it might be a long winter you don't know how long it'll be
208
so you do the best you can before
209
that you know final freeze sort of shuts you down
210
and um you know then come spring things start warming up
211
and you get maple syrup in the early you know early spring late winter
212
and that's kind of your first you know
213
crop or whatever cash flow
214
and then you know things start to pick up a little bit more in june you get strawberries
215
and in any case then all of a sudden you're in you know you're kind of into it
216
but uh there's just that you know seasonality um it's cyclical
217
and and trading is like that the problem with trading unfortunately is
218
that it's not as predictable um it's not as predictable
219
that oh we will definitely have a hot cycle coming in you know february
220
it's um we we just we don't know
221
when the human behavior will kind of shift to the buy side
222
and suddenly we see FOMO and this just incredible move and everything else.
223
So we've just got to be patient.
224
And that's the job that we're in.
225
Managers of risk, hunters of volatility.
226
All right.
227
So I will be back at it tomorrow.
228
I'll remind you as always, trading is risky.
229
My results aren't typical and there is no guarantee you'll find success whether you trade with me
230
or you learn on your own.
231
Your best bet is to practice a simulator before putting real money on the line.
232
And if you want to learn, watch every single video I've ever uploaded here on YouTube.
233
If you spent the time doing that, you would learn a ton and you would learn it for free.
234
If you find value in what I share, and you want to tune into my daily market commentary, check out the two -week trial.
235
It's 20 bucks.
236
I think it'll be money very well spent.
237
So links to the two -week trial are pinned the top of the comments
238
and I'll see you guys back at it first thing tomorrow morning.
