1
I've assembled for your pleasure here seven deadly sins of speaking.
2
First, gossip.
3
Speaking ill of somebody who's not present.
4
Second, judging.
5
We know people who are like this in conversation, and it's very hard to listen to somebody if you know that you're being judged.
6
Third, negativity.
7
And another form of negativity, complaining.
8
But actually complaining is viral misery.
9
Excuses.
10
We've all met this guy.
11
Maybe we've all been this guy.
12
Some people have a blame -thrower.
13
Penultimate, the six of the seven, exaggeration.
14
It demeans our language, actually, sometimes.
15
For example, if I see something that really is awesome, what do I call it?
16
And finally, dogmatism.
17
The confusion of facts with opinions.
18
I'd like to suggest that there are four really powerful cornerstones, cornerstones, foundations.
19
The word is hail.
20
So what do they stand for?
21
The H, honesty, of course.
22
Being true in what you say, being straight and clear.
23
The A is authenticity, just being yourself.
24
The I is integrity, being your word, actually doing what you say.
25
And the L is love.
26
I don't mean romantic love, but I do mean wishing people well.
27
Also, now that's what you say, and it's like old song it is what you say it's also the way
28
that you say it you have an amazing toolbox this instrument
29
is incredible register for example now falsetto register may not be very useful most of the time
30
so if i talk up here in my nose you can hear the difference
31
if i go down here in my throat but
32
if you want weight you need to go down here to the chest as we associate depth with power
33
and we have timbre it's the the way your voice feels again the research shows that we prefer voices which are rich, smooth, and there are amazing things you can do with breathing,
34
with posture, to improve the timbre.
35
Then prosody, this is the sing song, the meta -language that we use in order to impart meaning.
36
It's people who speak all on one note are really quite hard to listen to
37
if they don't have any prosody at all.
38
Pace, I can get very, very excited by saying something really, really quickly, or I can slow right down.
39
Of course, pitch often goes along with pace to indicate arousal, but you can do it just with pitch.
40
Where did you leave my keys?
41
And finally, volume.
42
I can get really excited, or I can have you really pay attention by getting very quiet.
43
What would the world be like
44
if we were speaking powerfully to people who were listening consciously in environments which were actually fit for purpose?
45
That would be a world that does sound beautiful, and one where understanding would be the norm.
46
Thank you.
47
Thank you.
