Hello, welcome back to English with Eleanor.
2
Today we are going to look at one of my favourite ways of learning
3
and teaching a language and that is through reading.
4
So together we are going to look at a paragraph,
5
a short paragraph from a very famous book and we are going to practice with pronunciation,
6
vocabulary and expressions from this paragraph to help you build your English vocabulary.
7
Mr and Mrs Dursley of number four Privet Drive were proud to say that they were perfectly normal,
8
thank you very much.
9
They were the last people you'd expect to be involved in anything strange
10
or mysterious because they just didn't hold with such nonsense.
11
The first thing that we can notice here is
12
that there are a number of adjectives that are being used to describe the Dursleys.
13
So there are four adjectives here,
14
proud, normal, strange, and mysterious.
15
So if we look at normal,
16
you will see that it says they were perfectly normal, perfectly normal.
17
So in this case, perfectly is used to intensify the adjective normal.
18
It's like using the word completely.
19
So we could say that something is perfectly safe or the instructions were perfectly clear.
20
So this just intensifies the adjective.
21
In the next sentence, there is an expression
22
that is they were the last people you'd expect to be involved in anything strange or mysterious.
23
So we can use this expression and adapt it to other situations.
24
For example, this is the last place I'd expect to find a cafe
25
or he is the last person I'd expect to turn up at the party.
26
We use this to talk about situations that are very unlikely.
27
We also have in this sentence the expression to be involved in.
28
So another way of saying this might be to be connected
29
with something like she is involved in charity work for example and in the last sentence it says
30
they just didn't hold with such nonsense so when we say that somebody just doesn't hold with something.
31
It's like an older way of saying that people don't approve of or believe in something.
32
For example, he just doesn't hold with gossip.
33
The last thing from a language perspective
34
that we're going to look at is such so remember
35
that such is used with nouns so here we have such nonsense can you read it with me very slowly let's go
36
So, Mr. and Mrs. Dursley of number four Privet Drive were proud to say that they were perfectly normal.
37
Thank you very much.
38
They were the last people you'd expect to be involved in anything strange
39

40
Thank you for reading along with me.

I hope you enjoyed it.

Grammar & Expressions in Context

  • Adjectives and Intensifiers: The phrase "they were perfectly normal" uses the intensifier 'perfectly' to enhance the adjective 'normal.' This structure can be borrowed for various contexts, such as "The instructions were perfectly clear."
  • Expressions of Expectation: The expression "the last people you'd expect to be involved" is useful for creating suspense or highlighting improbability. You can say, "This is the last place I'd expect to find a cafe."
  • Involvement and Connection: The phrase "to be involved in" indicates a connection to an activity or subject. For example, "She is involved in charity work," is an essential structure for discussing engagement in different contexts.
  • Use of 'Hold with': The phrase "didn't hold with such nonsense" exemplifies a less common structure meaning to disapprove. Try using similar formats in your discussions: "He just doesn't hold with gossip."
  • Use of 'Such': The word 'such' emphasizes nouns and helps to express strong feelings. For instance, you might say, "They enjoy such adventures," to highlight significant experiences.

Common Pronunciation Traps

While practicing with this video and materials, be aware of certain pronunciation challenges that could arise:

  • Perfectly: The word 'perfectly' can be tricky due to the blending of sounds. Ensure clarity when pronouncing each syllable.
  • Involved: The final 'd' in 'involved' should be pronounced clearly to avoid slurring, which is a common mistake.
  • Nonsense: The 'n' and 's' sounds in 'nonsense' must be pronounced distinctly to enhance clarity.

By practicing these components and utilizing the video effectively as a shadowing site, you will make significant strides in your English speaking abilities. Remember, the more you engage with materials like this, the more fluent you will become!
