1
Jeffrey's watching self-improvement videos, but he's not taking action.
2
He feels like he's in a massive rut.
3
That habit tracker's looking kinda empty, Jeffrey.
4
Wait, don't lie, Jeffrey.
5
You haven't meditated today.
6
Don't check the bar, Jeffrey.
7
Will Jeffrey get out of his massive rut?
8
Find out at the end of this episode.
9
Adonis.
10
Adonis doesn't get into ruts.
11
He cuts.
12
He cuts vegetables and meats for his entire tribe. That loud slurp.
13
He cuts.
14
But he wasn't always like this.
15
When Adonis was going through his self-improvement journey, he was in rut after rut after rut.
16
The only difference was that he used the best strategy to get out of them.
17
So imagine me in 2021, I've got about a thousand subscribers on YouTube.
18
I'm in my bedroom, I open up my laptop, and I'm about to go onto a call on Discord with my video editor, Sam.
19
I already knew that this guy, he was like, no offense to him, but he was like a Jeffrey.
20
This is like a few years ago, he's different now, but let me tell you the story of 2021, right?
21
He was live streaming like every day, like I would see it on Discord next to his name,
22
where it would say like he's been live playing valorant oh you know some like video game or something
23
and basically every time i would go on to discord he
24
was live streaming quick side note i didn't actually expect to tell you this story
25
and i think i've told sam this
26
but i used to go on to his live streams like
27
i this was literally i didn't play video games i wasn't interested in it
28
or anything but he was like my employee like my friend
29
so i used to go on his live streams on like a random twitch account
30
that i had which didn't have my name on it
31
and i'd literally be there in the chat supporting him
32
and sending him donations
33
and stuff i'm pretty sure i'm pretty sure i told him maybe i'll ask him
34
but that's so sweet isn't it i'm a sweet guy aren't i
35
but anyway we're about to go on to this discord call
36
and when he accepts the call his room is just like dark
37
and messy and
38
if depression had a look that's what he had you could just tell he wasn't living like a healthy, happy life.
39
And honestly, like right away, I felt really sorry for him because I was living like this beautiful life on self-improvement.
40
I was going out into the sun and exercising every day and meditating.
41
I was feeling amazing because I had committed myself to the path of self-improvement.
42
And he was one of the closest guys to me.
43
You know, he started as like my employee, but soon turned into my best friend around here.
44
We started to call, you know, like one, two, three times a week and
45
so we go on this call and he ends up just opening up
46
because I think I asked him the deep question of you know how are you doing really
47
and he said you know he stayed up late
48
and he's sick of it and like he's just not liking his life at the time
49
that we had this call I was doing self improvement coaching for my audience
50
so basically I had like this website where people could pay
51
me like I think it was like 50 bucks per month
52
or something and they'd be able to hop onto calls with me every week and I'd give them like advice on self-improvement.
53
I just thought, fuck it, I'll do it for this guy like for free, right?
54
I had already done this for myself and so many guys
55
that I literally imagine I said this to a guy who's been depressed.
56
He was literally on antidepressants, right?
57
I forgot to mention that.
58
He was literally on antidepressants, went through the like the sort of government doctors, NHS and all that type of stuff.
59
I remember distinctly having conversations with my mom about the possibility of having to learn with
60
and adapt to the fact that I have very strong depression.
61
Everything felt like a chore and a mountainous task to me.
62
Even really simple things like brushing my fucking teeth.
63
And here was me with like a shaving head saying, oh yeah, bro, I'll get you on self-improvement and within two weeks you won't be depressed anymore.
64
I remember like him almost reacting in the sense of like, yeah, right.
65
He had been literally depressed for years and he had me say, oh yeah, within a few weeks you won't be depressed anymore.
66
So I told him exactly what to do.
67
I checked in with him every single day.
68
I told him, okay, this is the workout that you do.
69
This is the habits that you do.
70
This is the book that you read.
71
And over the next few days, you know, he's sending me some messages and realistically he didn't do a lot of the habits, right?
72
You know, he didn't read this day or he didn't meditate this day, but you know, he really did try, right?
73
Two weeks later, he actually felt significantly better.
74
He wasn't jacked, he wasn't rich, he wasn't like off the antidepressants or anything, but there was like a significant difference and he was,
75
he did literally seem happier and funnier.
76
And one point I'll just make is I think us just talking through this rut that he was in also helped because, you know, we were having these like positive,
77
hopeful conversations about growth and progress and goals almost every single day, which is exactly what someone needs when they're in this like rut, right?
78
So it takes 14 days and he literally feels better.
79
Now here's the best part of the story.
80
He tries his best and continues on this path, me and him get closer.
81
He makes more progress more progress more progress this guy who's
82
my best friend who was depressed for fucking years who was
83
suicidal at one point who was on literal antidepressants two months
84
of following my advice this is not two months he gets
85
off antidepressants two months it was one of the most proud days of my entire life leading up to
86
that moment where he was going to have like the consultation with the doctor
87
and he just didn't need this medication anymore like it was him doing the work of course
88
so he gets the credit
89
but like you know it was it was me who like told him what to do what advice
90
and you know what action steps to take
91
and everything two months he had depression for years it took him two months
92
but two weeks to actually feel the difference
93
so before i go on to like tell you the advice of this video
94
and exactly what to do i'm sure
95
that sam is going to be reading all the comments
96
and he's going to watch this video of course
97
because i'll send it to him so If you just want to write a message to him, I think that'll be really sweet.
98
So if you just scroll down and say, I don't know, W Sam or some shit, or, you know, tell your story of what's been happening,
99
because I genuinely do think that my friend Sam has one of the best self-improvement transformations that I've personally seen.
100
He went from genuine Jeffrey, like 16 hours of video games, live streaming antidepressants, to living in Thailand,
101
having a good group of masculine men around him, beautiful girlfriend, happy and fit, and going to the gym,
102
business, that's making money online it's a wonderful transformation to see your own friend go through
103
so here's my advice to you if you want a transformation like
104
that and you're feeling like you're in a rut because
105
that was in 2021 a year before
106
that moment i was the one in the rut in 2020
107
when covid had just started i was living in like this apartment in manchester like the city center in uk
108
and i was like down bad as fuck i've told this story
109
so many times where like literally i used to smoke weed every day i used to like fap
110
and watch fucked up like degenerate porn
111
like you know the kind of like stimulating porn where i'd have like five tabs open at once
112
or i'd be watching like compilations and shit like that and
113
so i remember one day where people were talking about mental health it was like on reddit right
114
and here was the interesting thing someone actually linked a questionnaire
115
that you can take that would quantify your mental health and give you a score
116
and as soon as I saw this link I clicked on it
117
because I was like oh that would be
118
so cool to have like a quantitative score
119
because you know I had been kind of like an athlete like nothing serious
120
but you know going to the gym
121
and one of the things I always liked was like tracking the number of like my body weight the weight
122
that I could lift
123
or the amount of pull-ups I could do you know to see the number progress
124
so I click on this link
125
and I got a score for my depression for my anxiety
126
and ADHD and as soon as I did
127
that imagine it was like something just hit me
128
and I was like all I've got to do is reduce
129
these scores a lower score means like a better mental health
130
and I was like oh okay so I'll set a goal right
131
so imagine if my depression was like 20
132
and I set the goal to get it to 10 within
133
two weeks it's like straight away my brain started creatively coming
134
up with ideas of what I could do to improve my mental health
135
and get out of the rut that I was in and
136
so I started to do just
137
that I had these three scores for my mental health and my goal was just to half them in two weeks.
138
And so every day I would just kind of close my eyes
139
and imagine myself taking the test again and the score being halved.
140
And then my brain would tell me what you need to do to achieve that.
141
So suddenly I went from being this guy who was literally, honestly, like you could have defined me as a Jeffrey wanker, literally like that's the word which would have defined me like degenerate.
142
I went from that to running around the city shirtless in the sun
143
and like kind of smiling and being so happy
144
and like being playful like instead of just doing a normal run where you know you're proper serious
145
or some shit i'd do a run
146
and i'd like i'd jump over stuff you know there was like a fence
147
and i'd just stop at the fence and try
148
and like vault over it you know do some weird parkour
149
shit like a little kid i like i see some like brick wall
150
and i just try and climb over it
151
or something you know just being really happy
152
because it just intuitively came up to me like oh yeah
153
like well that's how you cure depression you just play with the world like you used to as a child, right?
154
So I wasn't on any kind of like specific plan or anything like that.
155
I just let my sort of inner child come out
156
and go play with the world like I used to when I was like just a little boy.
157
I'm doing this for two weeks.
158
I'm spending time away from like technology.
159
I'm just sat in the grass.
160
I had a girlfriend.
161
So I started to take her on like long walks with each other.
162
We'd walk into like the woods and like literally like randomly climb trees and everything.
163
Two weeks go by.
164
I open up the laptop again.
165
I take the same test.
166
And I swear of the three questionnaires that I took, all three, this is the most interesting part,
167
all three were exactly half the score as two weeks ago.
168
So I almost like, let's say, doubled my mental health or halved my mental illness in two weeks time.
169
So if you're finding yourself in a rut right now and you really want to get out of it, this is the action step that you can take.
170
I've linked the questionnaires in the description of this video so
171
if you just scroll down just go take them it only takes a few minutes
172
and it's really kind of weirdly fun to go
173
and get your like mental health score and just make sure
174
that you save the score so what you can do
175
if you also want to help me
176
and this video perform just get the score from each test
177
and come back to this video and just comment the score especially
178
if you comment it individually as well this video will start performing on the algorithm
179
which would be really really nice and then you can just come back
180
and just see okay your comments what score you got and two weeks from now, you can see how much you've been able to improve it.
181
And here's the thing, I'll give you the same advice that worked for me.
182
Instead of me telling you, do this, do this, do this.
183
Creatively, let your own brain and your own heart tell you what you need.
184
As soon as you set a goal in your mind's eye, and for example, let's say on the depression questionnaire, you got 20 and now you think, okay, I wanna get that to 10.
185
And you put that sort of visualization, like you just see the picture
186
or the mental movie of like depression score 10 in your mind
187
and just kind of sit there for a moment
188
and enjoy like yeah 10 like you know i halved my
189
mental health yeah fuck yeah okay feeling good okay really good
190
mental health 10 okay depression score is 10 your own brain
191
will start to think okay like what you need to do for it
192
and you can just ask the question okay what do i do to achieve this
193
and just sit there for a moment don't you know stimulate
194
yourself look away from the phone you can pause the video
195
and just sit there and be like what could I do your brain
196
and your heart will tell you what you need
197
if you just listen to it just go follow
198
that instead of me giving you the advice instead of me
199
saying okay just follow what I say maybe it'd be nice
200
if you followed what your heart told you
201
and another amazing action step you can do is
202
if you go over to your like calendar app or your phone
203
or something like that and set in a reminder 14 days from now
204
so for 14 days just try
205
and listen to your heart on how to half these scores 14 days from now go ahead
206
and take the test again and then just see how much progress you've made
207
and if within 14 days from now you take the test
208
and you have halved your score or you've improved it by any amount be
209
so proud of yourself and maybe hopefully come here
210
and like tell everyone else what exactly what you did any tips
211
that you can give them
212
and i would personally love to hear it just you know knowing that like my video helped you here.
213
One last piece of advice that I just love to give is that I'm realizing more and more that it really, really is the mental side of things,
214
like the inner work that dictates so much of your life.
215
I'm reading a book right now, which is called The Mountain Is You, which is a really interesting book.
216
And so if you're in this like weird rut, I can highly recommend reading this book because it's
217
so like deep about like your mental health and traumas and childhood and sabotage.
218
And I'll just give you the lesson that I've taken from it and then we'll end this video.
219
The bad habits that we do, just think about your bad habits for a second, right?
220
Those bad habits, they are coping mechanisms.
221
They are symptoms.
222
The real problem is not porn, video games, junk food, weed, all those things that we thought are the problems.
223
They're not the problems.
224
There are coping mechanisms that we do because we have some kind of emotional need, like some mental health need that we're not fulfilling.
225
So the guy who binge eats, and he eats really loads of junk food, he thinks that food is the problem, but it's not.
226
Food is his coping mechanism because the emotional need is, for example, he doesn't feel comfortable or safe.
227
I'm just gonna say this, right?
228
It would shock you how many fat people were as children.
229
It would shock you.
230
I've heard, like when I used to do self-improvement coaching, I heard, imagine this, like the weird life experience that I had.
231
I've been like a self-improvement coach, you know, I'm not like a specialist or psychologist or anything like that.
232
I'm just a guy who just likes to be on self-improvement, right?
233
But I've had, what, thousands of conversations with people about the deep things that they've been into.
234
And I'm telling you, like, it's so interesting speaking to people who think the problem is, for example, junk food, when really it's the junk food that they eat just to make themselves feel safe
235
because the real problem was that they were literally violated as children.
236
And so I know that's a very severe, like, specific example.
237
But think about the variation of that for yourself.
238
Imagine a time when, like, you went through so much pain and maybe trauma as a child.
239
And how that's coming out in your actions as an adult.
240
I'll open up to you and tell you the truth.
241
Like, I never felt safe as a child.
242
I was hit and abused and threatened by my own parents, by my family, by my brother.
243
I had a lot of, like, kids being racist to me.
244
And so there's two things that I did for like a feeling of comfort and safety, which was video games and junk food.
245
And so I still find myself, honestly, as an adult craving the peaceful video games like Minecraft
246
and also craving like comfort food when I'm in a moment of stress.
247
So I'll just end this video just after this quick story.
248
So I'm in Bali right now and I was trying to find a home
249
and I was checking into hotel after hotel
250
and imagine like you know at first it's kind of novelties
251
and it's like oh new hotel is kind of cool
252
and everything but there was a time
253
when i checked into four hotels in four days
254
so imagine how stressful
255
that is wait you check into a hotel you've got your bag you unpack your bag
256
because you need something in there then you go
257
and do your day and everything but then you sleep knowing
258
that you've got to leave tomorrow you wake up
259
and you've got the gym at like nine
260
but you also need to check out
261
so you're trying to figure out okay i've got to check out before can i come back
262
and after okay i'll check out right now then you pack
263
up everything again you fit it all into the bag You go downstairs with a heavy bag, then you check out, then you check into the, oh, you can't check into the new place just yet because the check-in starts at 1 p.m.
264
So you take it back to the gym, you go train in the gym, then you go over to the new place, you check in there knowing you're only there for it.
265
Imagine how stressful that is for four days
266
because I was trying to find like a place to stay for long term, right?
267
And I remember on the last day, I actually felt the feeling of like stress and exhaustion that literally the desire for comfort food,
268
for junk food and pastries and snacks was so high that I'll just admit to you, I completely crumbled and I had like 2000 calories like before 9am.
269
And when I look at it now, I'm like, was it really that like I needed the croissants and the chocolate thing or anything before like, you know, like morning time?
270
I didn't need that as like nutrition, right?
271
The reason why I craved those foods that day was
272
because I was so exhausted and I needed like a feeling of comfort.
273
And so imagine if I hated food because of that moment.
274
Imagine if I thought the problem was the food that I ate that day.
275
It'd be so easy for me to say, oh yeah, the problem was the food, right?
276
I think the food is just a symptom.
277
Like I would say I probably do have like a bit of an addiction to like junk food, but I don't think it's the junk food that's actually the problem.
278
It's the emotional need that I'm eating it for.
279
It's because I see it as a stress reliever.
280
And so having these realizations in the last few days has really made me slow down and think like, oh yeah, like that's actually so interesting
281
that we have these like tendencies as humans that we go and do actions that aren't really good for us,
282
but they're almost like coping mechanisms for the real problem,
283
which is like an unmanageable amount of stress or we don't have like a healthy coping mechanism. And
284
so my action step for myself to get out of like
285
the sort of rut I'm in with my diet is
286
that I wanna try and find healthier coping mechanism that when I'm in that moment of stress, like I'm checking out of a hotel or this thing or that thing or this thing,
287
There's something healthier I can do, which still feels pretty comforting and relaxing.
288
And I think if I can find that, I think my diet will improve as well.
289
So hopefully, if you follow along with my videos, you'll see me make progress on that alongside you.
290
And so what happened to young Jeffrey at the start of this video?
291
Maybe, just maybe, he's able to get out of his rut with Adonis' help.
292
One last thing, the top two links in the description are my free community.
293
So if you want to go and make friends on self-improvement, the top link will take you to our Discord server where you can just go chat with other young men.
294
And also the second link is a self-improvement forum.
295
So if you want to get into really high-level intellectual discussions
296
and you want to write like paragraphs and everything to talk to other guys to discuss like self-improvement concepts,
297
philosophy and health and religion and like the deeper things, go down to those links and just choose which one you want to join.
298
Do the hard work, especially when you don't feel like it.
