1
I've got to stop taking life so seriously.
2
I know every time I'm feeling stressed out, overwhelmed, fearful, whatever it is,
3
I'm too identified with myself.
4
I'm taking everything too seriously.
5
Life, this whole play that we're living in, because that's really what it is.
6
It's just this temporary play that we're all part of.
7
And when we get so identified with it, we lose touch with truth.
8
The truth of who we are, the actual nature of our reality, all of it.
9
And it all comes back to just being aware and conscious of ourselves.
10
Really It all starts within ourselves That's where you regulate yourself
11
That's where you become aware of thoughts the emotions the beliefs that once gripped you and
12
You identified so closely with that dictated your internal state of being
13
it all starts with awareness the quality of our lives begins with the quality of our consciousness
14
and as I said if I speak for my own experience anytime I've been anything but at peace
15
I am usually just overly identified and attached to something
16
that isn't me and when I say me I don't mean the labels
17
and the concepts that have made up my identity it's the I am before
18
that identity it's just the awareness the conscious awareness
19
that each of us is at our core
20
and you don't have to go anywhere to experience it it's
21
already here it's already within you you just have to slow down you just have to breathe
22
and regulate a lot of people ask me well how do
23
you regulate your nervous system how do you start you start by no longer reacting to the dysregulated patterns
24
that are controlling you it's easier said than done I understand
25
that but I give an analogy once in another video
26
and your nervous system think of it like the wheel of fortune you know how you have
27
that big wheel and if you want it to spin really fast, at first it's still and if you spin it, you've got to grip it and you rip it down
28
and spinning and then you tap it and then it keeps it spinning really fast.
29
That's like our nervous system.
30
When we're dysregulated, it's like that wheel spinning really fast.
31
How do you get that wheel to slow down?
32
You can try and interfere with it by trying to force it to stop,
33
but I don't know, maybe you'd hurt your finger if you did that, But if you just stopped and observed the wheel spinning,
34
or just watched it, without trying to interfere with it, eventually it slows down on its own.
35
Same is true with us.
36
When we become slow down, whatever we're doing, and become aware of ourselves,
37
you come back into balance within yourself.
38
Maybe not immediately.
39
I think we're so used to things needing to happen right away.
40
And if they don't, then it doesn't seem worth our time
41
because we've trained our minds to just need the instant hit of dopamine to,
42
you know, not be able to hold our focus on something for more than 10 seconds.
43
And again, I know what it's like.
44
I know what it's like to be on social media apps and scroll from real to real.
45
I see the impacts on myself, But I've realized the way out of it is exactly what I'm saying.
46
It's to slow down and to just stop and be aware.
47
Be aware of the discomfort of trying to be aware.
48
Noticing your mind's chaos and your emotions and the urges, everything.
49
Because when you can stop and become aware of those things, that's like you watching the wheel rather than tapping the wheel to make it go faster,
50
continue spinning as long as we react to our thoughts
51
and emotions and the patterns and the story we're just going to strengthen
52
that story we're going to strengthen those patterns we're going to
53
strengthen the dysregulation it it seems like it works in the
54
moment it seems like reacting to those fear-based patterns is is a good thing because it soothes you in the moment but
55
just because an addict chooses to do drugs again
56
or whatever it is because they're going through a withdrawal doesn't mean
57
that it's the best thing for them in the long run it's just soothing them It's coping.
58
Same is true with us in many ways.
59
When we are identified and attached to these things that we think are us but aren't actually,
60
that's when we react.
61
That's when we take life very seriously.
62
And you don't have to.
63
it's a it is it is a fight-or-flight response you know i get it you know a lot of times
64
when i say this people like oh well i need to make money
65
and stuff i get it yeah money's important i'm not denying
66
that but when we put the external world before our own connection to truth
67
we lose ourselves
68
that is where you start to have a drop in your inner well-being your overall quality of life
69
because as I said the quality of our lives begins with what's going on in here
70
and in here not necessarily what you have outside of you it's definitely part of it
71
but once you have your basic needs covered everything else after
72
that is your mind and your emotions telling you
73
that you need more I don't know what it's like I know it's like to buy nice things
74
or have things that you want to buy and you know they're they're great
75
for a bit but it goes away the the feeling goes away doesn't last forever
76
That's why they say money can't buy happiness.
77
It buys comfort.
78
It can buy you time.
79
Which is important.
80
Time is life.
81
It's the currency of life.
82
Time.
83
You only have a finite amount of it.
84
You can have all the money in the world, but if you're on your deathbed, it doesn't really matter.
85
So, how do you make the most out of your time?
86
Out of this moment right now?
87
What I've realized, it's by going deeper into the moment,
88
by being present, by observing, by being aware of ourselves, and by being regulated.
89
Because having a regulated nervous system and being aware within ourselves is priceless.
90
To me, I think it's priceless.
91
That is where you find the wellspring of wisdom and truth and peace all within yourself.
92
You don't have to go anywhere to get it.
93
You don't have to read another book or listen to another podcast.
94
I can't really explain it, but when you practice this stillness,
95
you realize that it holds everything.
96
There's nothing that money could buy that could give you this or replace this because
97
You're connecting with the truth of who you are.
98
And nothing in this external world could give you that.
99
I think, anyways.
100
Now, maybe my experience of life will show me otherwise in the future, but up until this point, that's what I realized.
101
Peace is within.
102
And awareness is always right here.
103
Therefore, you always have access to peace.
104
It doesn't mean you're going to be happy necessarily or that the pain that you experience will just vanish.
105
I think it's part of the human experience that we have those emotions.
106
The happiness, the joy, the sadness, the anger, the frustration, all of it.
107
It's all part of being human.
108
But again, when we take ourselves so seriously and life so seriously,
109
and we identify with this dream that we're all in right now, that's where it becomes very difficult.
110
And it doesn't mean that you necessarily have to renounce your participation in this dream, as I call it, in the worldly play.
111
No, it's are you able to be in the world but not of it?
112
Are you able to participate, take on your duties as a parent,
113
a sibling, a friend, a spouse, whatever your career is?
114
But realize, as Alan Watts said, that it's play.
115
We get to be humans for this short period of time, this blip in time.
116
And quite often we miss out on the truth that that is the gift in being here.
117
I think it was Neil Tyson DeGrasse
118
that said something about how the likelihood of you being born is
119
so astronomically small that really that's why it is the gift.
120
and yet we go through life
121
always losing sight of that and not only losing sight of that but losing sight of our connection to something greater, really.
122
Again, we go through life so identified with our conditioned mind and it convinces us that we need more.
123
we need to chase
124
we constantly need to be striving
125
because if we aren't we're not going to have enough
126
but it's not until you loosen your grip on life that you realize that things have a way of working out
127
without you needing to try and force them to work out and again that's where that's where the real power is.
128
Power isn't in forcing.
129
Think about boxing, for example, or sprinters.
130
I don't know if you know much about either of those sports
131
but i used to be a sprinter and the people
132
that could sprint the fastest weren't the ones who were clenching their muscles the hardest they're the ones
133
that could relax that could
134
if you look at like a slow motion video of world-class sprinters their faces are so relaxed when they're sprinting,
135
yet they have this tremendous power that they can exert into the ground and spring them forward.
136
Boxers, boxers don't try to hit hard, they're relaxed and that gives them their speed.
137
The harder we try, the more resistance we create,
138
the more friction we create.
139
But when we're so dysregulated and living from this fight-or-flight response within ourselves, we feel like we have to try,
140
we have to strive, we have to force things.
141
It's like taking the long way around.
142
It's like swimming upstream when you could go with the flow.
143
The conscious mind
144
understands how to go with the flow
145
and let go of the need to force to be connected to truly be connected to God or life the universe
146
number of terms for the same thing really I think but if you can connect with that, a person could learn to connect with that,
147
they'd realize that that is the real, that's where the real fulfillment in life comes from.
148
There's nothing that could fill that space within your own soul except for that, connecting with it.
149
It's like trying to plug the wrong outlet into a light socket, it doesn't fit.
150
You're not going to get that electrical current you're not going to get
151
that connection a lot of times we try to fill a void
152
or fill a piece within ourselves with material wealth material possessions people relationships when it could only be filled
153
on a spiritual level, I think.
154
And it all starts with awareness.
155
It all starts with stillness.
156
As Rumi said, the quieter you become, the more you can hear.
157
Like I said, you don't have to go anywhere.
158
It's always right here, right now.
159
And when you can touch base with that, When you can have that as the foundation for your existence, the way you live your life,
160
interesting things start to happen.
161
You start to feel different in everyday life, but you start to attract different.
162
As you change this, the external changes.
163
because it's an extension of you.
164
Your external reality is an extension of your mind and your state of consciousness.
165
So, you could have two people walking into the same room and have two completely different experiences.
166
So, it starts with you.
167
The quality of your life begins with the quality of your consciousness.
168
Don't take life so seriously.
169
I hope this video helps and I'll see you in the next one.
