1
Hi, I'm Ali Plum.
2
I'm here to talk to Emma about HeForShe and the launch of the new HeForShe website.
3
For those who don't know, what is HeForShe?
4
HeForShe is a solidarity movement for gender equality, like in a nutshell.
5
Big question here.
6
Yeah.
7
What is HeForShe trying to achieve?
8
We're trying to achieve gender equality,
9
but I think the really cool thing about HeForShe is that we aren't just,
10
you know, an education or an awareness campaign.
11
It's wonderful that people are talking about it and it's great that so many people are talking about it.
12
But we're more than just an awareness campaign.
13
We are mission focused.
14
We're really trying to collect,
15
register, be aware of people that are taking action for gender equality.
16
And that's really our main focus.
17
Where are we currently in the world with a state of gender equality?
18
Well it's really interesting because there's this perceived notion that gender inequality was sort of a thing of the past,
19
that we've sort of figured that one out
20
and you know we're kind of where we need to be
21
but when you start to look even just a little bit deeper beneath the surface you start to realise
22
that actually we've got quite a long way to go.
23
Why is it important to involve men like myself with this project?
24
I think there's this perception that feminism or gender equality or like women's issues are to be talked about by women,
25
that it's for women, and you know,
26
women are like this separate thing,
27
but of course women are human beings and these are human rights that we're talking about.
28
So we kind of need everyone to be part of the conversation
29
and that was really what He For She is about
30
and how He For She was born was that we wanted to make sure that the conversation was
31
inclusive and also we were talking to people that didn't agree with us and that was actually really important.
32
We want to create change and
33
so the conversation needs to be opened up to groups
34
that perhaps traditionally hadn't been associated with engaging with feminism or gender equality.
35
Could you give me some examples of stories from men who have become involved with HeForShe?
36
I was on the university tour for HeForShe and there was a young man who we asked,
37
you know, like, what would gender equality mean for you?
38
And he was like, well,
39
it would mean that I could drink my fizzy cider without my mates taking the piss out of me.
40
I was like, well, this doesn't sound like a very compelling,
41
compelling reason to achieve gender equality in the world.
42
But actually, he sort of started to elaborate more.
43
And he was just saying that he found the pressure
44
to fit this male mould and to conform to this kind of lad culture of like this very heavy binge drinking,
45
actually really kind of soul destroying.
46
And that he was often really ashamed of how he acted
47
when he was on these huge like binge drinking things with his mates
48
and how he treated girls specifically when he was like that.
49
And the dude just wanted to drink fizzy cider.
50
You know what I'm saying?
51
And it was just really sweet, actually.
52
And I just found that something so simple.
53
But guys just feel this incredible pressure to be...
54
that in order to be a man,
55
there are all of these ideas that they really have to live up to and conform to.
56
And it's actually a bit suffocating.
57
We're here to specifically discuss the he4she.org website.
58
Yes.
59
Why is that so important?
60
Well, it's important because we want to be the first and largest crowdsourcing tool for solutions to gender equality.
61
And the reason that is exciting is because we've had people sign up to The Commitment.
62
And I've had lots of wonderful emails from men saying,
63
all right, I'm on board.
64
I get it.
65
I'm into it.
66
you know, great, but like,
67
what do you want me to do?
68
What do you actually want me to do about this now?
69
I'm like, so this has been great,
70
and we've received hundreds of emails like this,
71
and so we've set up this website.
72
But what's been really interesting is that we haven't wanted to prescribe to anyone how best within their specific country,
73
town, school, community, whatever the best way to enact this change is.
74
And actually when people have come up with their own solutions organically,
75
there's been some amazing things that have happened.
76
So a man in Zimbabwe started a husband's school for Hifashi, which was incredible.
77
We've had one of our Hifashi champions,
78
the president of Malawi, just annulled 300 child bride marriages and sent the girls back to school,
79
which was unbelievable.
80
We've had the University of Waterloo decided that they were going to give scholarships for girls for engineering specifically,
81
which has been amazing.
82
So we've kind of, we've realized that like you guys have the solutions
83
and we just need to create the platform through which we can inspire you.
84
So we've created this website and we think it's pretty awesome.
85
It's got all of these new features.
86
It's got a, it's called an impact map.
87
And what it does is it shows you a map of the world.
88
and then if you click on your country it'll show you the issue
89
which is which you think
90
or you voted is the most important with regards to gender equality
91
so it might be political representation it might be education it
92
might be health it might be identity you know there's all of these different ones
93
that you can sort of like click on and you can vote
94
and what's great is that we're going to be able to collect
95
that data and we're gonna be able to take that to governments,
96
to companies, businesses, universities, individuals and say this is the issue
97
that the people of your country think is the one
98
which most needs to be worked on and changed and when we can use that to leverage resources,
99
funds you know we can really we can really push behind whatever
100
that is and the coolest thing is that it's kind of essentially voted for by the public.
101
It's essentially the reason I'm the most excited about the website is
102
because it's sort of like a manifestation of an online grassroots movement in
103
that it's really driven by people and their involvement with it.
104
What are your plans for the future of the website?
105
Where next?
106
I gave the speech last September about he for she
107
and about what it was about and I talked about how gender wasn't a binary
108
so it wasn't kind of men over here in this corner and women over here in this corner.
109
I was trying to express this idea that gender works on this spectrum
110
and that people fall in all sorts of different places on the spectrum.
111
And then we realised that the website didn't really reflect that and so HeForShe actually changed it which is pretty cool.
112
So today I get to be the first woman who can sign up to the HeForShe commitment which is awesome.
113
The other thing that we did is made it so
114
that you didn't have to sign the website as a man or a woman.
115
You could actually choose how you identified yourself,
116
what pronoun you wanted to use.
117
So whether you're trans, non-gender conforming,
118
whatever you want to call yourself,
119
you can register and identify yourself in that way.
120
We wanted to make sure that the website was really inclusive and really empowering for the people that were taking the commitment.
121
And that they could identify themselves as they wanted.
122
So that's really exciting.
123
So the Secretary General is the first man to sign up.
124
I'm going to be the first woman.
125
And we hope that lots and lots and lots of people will continue to sign up,
126
which is awesome.
127
The other cool thing that we're measuring is not just the number of people taking the commitment,
128
but the number of gender equality actions.
129
So people actually doing something for he for she,
130
for gender equality, whether that be a marathon being run for he for she,
131
or whether it be a husband's school that gets started in Zimbabwe,
132
or whatever the action is,
133
we want to measure it,
134
we want to know that it's important to us,
135
we want to share the story of that happening.
136
and we want that visual on the website so that's really exciting too.
137
In other words, if you're watching this and you haven't already signed up, sign up.
138
Yes, if you're watching this and you haven't signed up yet,
139
whoever you are, wherever you are, please, please do.
140
It's a really fun and interesting website and I think it's going to turn into what we hope is an amazing resource,
141
toolkit, solutions kit that will make your commitment to these ideas actionable.
142
And we want to empower you to support and we need and we want that support.
143
Could you tell me a bit more about how the website works?
144
Yes, so I don't know anything about websites,
145
so it was all a little bit confusing for me at first.
146
But the website's been designed so that it's sort of mobile friendly
147
and iPad friendly and it sort of works in all these different mediums.
148
So it's got what I'm told in the tech world is called a hamburger in the top left hand corner,
149
which is like these three lines which functions as your navigation
150
which means that you can use it on your mobile
151
and it sort of takes you to these three sort of key you know ideas
152
or principles of the website which is that your voice matters
153
and and your actions make it real
154
and your stories are really important to us too so the website is kind of collecting this data archiving these stories,
155
collecting all of these solutions and tools and ideas about how we can make gender equality a reality and actionable.
156
And yeah, it's kind of,
157
it's very simple and clean and hopefully easy to use.
158
That's the idea.
159
So you're watching this on your mobile?
160
Yeah.
161
You could go and sign up right now.
162
Yeah.
163
So that's, yeah, that's the idea is that you can access it on your mobile.
164
super easy to use on your phone.
165
Yeah, you could just sign up right now.
166
You could just now, you could just pause this video and be like,
167
I know what I'm gonna do.
168
I'm gonna go and sign the HeForShe commitment.
169
This pin here, as you can see.
170
Tell me about the logo for HeForShe.
171
So the HeForShe logo is actually kind of an amalgamation of the symbol for women and the symbol for men.
172
We really wanted a symbol or a logo that kind of encapsulated the idea of these two genders coming together in solidarity.
173
And so it's a combined symbol.
174
And is there anywhere that other people who aren't already lucky enough to have a pin?
175
Like yourself?
176
Like myself, could get their own?
177
Yes, so they've actually been sold out,
178
which is wonderful, but there are more that are coming next week,
179
there are more of the pins and the bans and they're on the website too.
180
Who are the big supporters you have for the website?
181
When you log onto the website,
182
what you'll see first of all is you'll see these kind portraits of women and men and they've been paired up,
183
so there's only half a face.
184
And so the idea behind that was that,
185
you know, we are, the idea that we are one,
186
that what connects us is actually more significant than what divides us.
187
We kind of hope that these portraits will build
188
and we're also hoping
189
that we can tell the stories of all of the different faces on the website
190
and why they care about gender equality and why it's important to them.
191
So we have NATO is one of our he for she champions, pretty amazing.
192
The whole of the European Commission,
193
the UN Secretary General, President Obama,
194
Prince Harry has signed up.
195
We've had some pretty amazing support really.
196
It's really been amazing.
197
Finally, what is next for you, Emma? be continuing the he for she university tour hopefully
198
and uh we we've only done it in europe so far
199
but we hope that it's going to spread spread everywhere so
200
that will be great i'm going to be at davos next
201
week at the world economic forum with our 10 he for she impact champions
202
who are going to release some very interesting data on on gender parity within their own companies
203
and the representation of women within their institutions which will be amazing.
204
So yeah, lots happening and then today obviously focusing on the website launch.
205
Tell me about your book club,
206
I hear you have one.
207
I do have a book club.
208
It's called Our Shared Shelf and it's on Goodreads and the idea is that we pick a new book every month.
209
This month's book is My Life on the Road by Gloria Steinem,
210
which is her new memoir.
211
I'm about two-thirds of the way through, I would say, now.
212
And it's been amazing.
213
There's tons and tons and tons of discussion topics.
214
I think we have 80,000 members now, which is unbelievable.
215
It's really fun, and I'm going to be trying to organize conversations with the authors
216
or other thinkers on the topic to discuss with readers, too.
217
So it's a really cool, fun project.
218
My shared shelf.
219
Our shared shelf.
220
Because it's not mine.
221
It's ours.
222
Do you see?
223
She'd have worked that one out, shouldn't I?
224
Do you see that?
225
It's ours.
226
It's everybody's.
227
Thank you so much for talking to me, Emma.
228
Thank you for talking to me.
229
I now know a lot more than I used to.
230
Yay!
231
Genuinely.
232
That's great.
233
And I got a pin.
234
And you got a he-for-she band.
235
This is the wrong way around.
236
You're going to take them off when you leave the room, aren't you?
237
He's upside down.
238
Heaps you.
239
I should have put it the wrong way around.

  • "What is HeForShe trying to achieve?" -
  • "We want to create change." -
  • "This doesn't sound like a very compelling reason." -
  • "I was often really ashamed." -
