Pratica di Shadowing: Beginner vs Oscar Level Actress (Same Scene) - Impara a parlare inglese con i video

Creazione lezione...
1
Obsession is taking the world by storm right now.
2
And one of the main reasons is because of the iconic performance of Indy Navarrete as Freaky Nikki.
3
I'm your Freaky Nikki.
4
But just how impressive actually was her performance?
5
Well, that's exactly the question that we're going to answer today by looking at how a beginner,
6
intermediate, professional, and then finally Indy Navarrete performed the exact same scene from the film Obsession.
7
This way we can finally answer what exactly about her performance is so special.
8
Now, I'm Tristan Spohn, a professional actor that you might have seen on Netflix, Paramount Plus, or Peacock on some of the following shows.
9
And I will be starting with our beginner actors,
10
Swan and Jessica, who had only a couple of classes under their belt at the time of recording this.
11
I have something.
12
What's this?
13
Open it.
14
It's a Chetoyant Quartz.
15
A tiger's eye.
16
She's leaning too heavily into the void, dark aspect of this character.
17
So I don't really get that sense of the attraction towards Bear.
18
It feels like she's saying, look at this present I got you, from the perspective of it's in the script and I'm saying what's in the script.
19
This stone's important to me.
20
Well, you know, after my dad left.
21
So why are you giving it to me?
22
Because you're important to me.
23
Aswan is doing a really great job.
24
He's not just trying to show us, look, this is the emotion that I'm experiencing, but he's trusting his eyes to do the work.
25
You can tell that Uswan actually does love her in a way that we just don't feel is reciprocated from Jessica.
26
Vicky?
27
Yeah?
28
Does your dad really have cancer?
29
No. No, no, no, no. What?
30
No!
31
Don't do that.
32
Why?
33
Sit down, please.
34
Why does it matter, Bear?
35
What do you mean?
36
I thought we were having a nice date.
37
We are.
38
She didn't full send that moment of having a breakdown.
39
It's a little bit too similar to the rest of the scene.
40
So that moment feels a lot less explosive than we need it to for this story.
41
Now remember, we are going to be breaking down all the way up to the Oscar-worthy acting of Indy Navarrete.
42
But first, let's check out our intermediate actors Ada and Alec, who have at least a few years of training under their belt in my online acting school, The Acting Lab.
43
It's a tiger's eye.
44
Wow.
45
It was my mom's.
46
And then it was mine.
47
You know it's supposed to bring you confidence and willpower, so now you can be a food critic.
48
So why are you giving it to me?
49
She starts the scene with tears already in her eyes, which is going to make it have a lot less contrast when we get to the breakdown moment,
50
but she doesn't just say the lines, she has a strong opinion about what she's saying.
51
And then And then you can also tell based off of her eyes that she's hiding something about how she's communicating herself.
52
That then makes it feel like a fully fleshed out, lived in, in-depth character.
53
Depth simply happens when there is something deeper down than we as the audience can fully see,
54
which is why Meryl Streep has a secret for every single character that she has.
55
That feeling of wanting to hold your cards close to your
56
chest instead of being obvious about how you feel is what creates that depth.
57
With Alec, Alec is almost giving detached boyfriend energy more than he's giving the girl that I'm desperately in love with energy.
58
See you on.
59
You love me?
60
I love you so much.
61
I honestly don't think I could live without you.
62
You actually believe that in a way that we just didn't with Jessica.
63
Jessica was so focused on the void creepiness of the character, we didn't actually get that love coming through.
64
And then there's that moment with Alec where he like grabs his chest.
65
It's because in the script it says he holds the tiger stone close to his heart.
66
We haven't really gotten the sense that this is important to him.
67
Whenever you have an action line, let it flow with the lines instead of it feeling like you're doing it right
68
when it says for you to do it.
69
And you always need to make sure it has a clear motivation.
70
Does your dad really have cancer?
71
No. No, no, no. A lot of actors immediately go into,
72
this is my intense moment, so let me really amp myself up to make sure I really let loose and lose control.
73
And so I love that she let what he said land on her.
74
No, no, no. No, no, no, no, no, don't do that.
75
Don't do that, I thought we were having a nice day, Bear.
76
Why does it matter?
77
I thought we were having a nice day!
78
It doesn't matter.
79
It doesn't matter.
80
Sit down.
81
Then why does it matter?
82
It doesn't matter to me.
83
She has a lot more emotional availability than Jessica did.
84
she felt like she could actually fully lose control of herself, which is such a huge part of acting.
85
Her being on the edge of tears made the entire thing feel like she was just really sad and really somber, where then when she snaps at him,
86
it doesn't land as good as it could have.
87
And then with Alec, it's not necessarily that what he's doing is bad.
88
It's just the wrong fit.
89
He needs to have that insecurity and lack of confidence that leads to him breaking the one wish Willow to begin with.
90
And Alec just doesn't give that energy at all.
91
Once you're auditioning consistently, you're looking for how can I honor this character
92
while also honoring my strengths so even if I don't book this role, the casting director knows roles I would be perfect for later down the line.
93
And that's how you start basically treating your auditions like seeds that you're planting.
94
Now, before we go break down our original scene, let's check out our professionals.
95
Our bear is so much less cool than Alec is.
96
Me.
97
I will be playing bear and again I've been on some of the shows
98
that are currently on the screen right now
99
and then we also have Isabelle as our freaky Nikki who is a professional actress in her home country of Norway.
100
Now I filmed this scene a few days ago
101
and made a grievous error but we'll talk about that after we've watched it a little bit.
102
See if you can catch it.
103
Everything okay?
104
Nikki, do you...
105
What?
106
Nothing.
107
I have something for you.
108
What's this?
109
Open it.
110
I thought this scene took place closer to the climax after three other major creepy events happened.
111
Which is why I have this completely out of place moment of, oh my god, what is this gift?
112
What is she giving me?
113
I should not feel as traumatized as I feel in the beginning.
114
I'm doing way too much.
115
And that's also why Isabel comes across a lot more creepy.
116
Because I also told her some context and subtext.
117
Which made her also think that Nikki was at a creepier place.
118
And that's where having a very cohesive timeline is so important
119
because when you're on set you frequently film out of order
120
But I also love this
121
because at the end of the day a big part of the audition process is making mistakes
122
and being wrong It's a lot easier to work with an actor
123
that brings way too much Trusting
124
that you can bring them down than it is to work with an actor
125
that doesn't fully commit And you have to see if you can get them to fully commit on the day.
126
It's supposed to bring your confidence and willpower so now you can be a food critic.
127
Why are you giving this to me?
128
Bear, this stone is important to me.
129
One major difference that we're seeing between Ada and Isabel is Ada had perfect continuity from beginning to end.
130
We didn't necessarily see those glitches of the fact that this isn't exclusively Nikki, it's Nikki plus this other entity and I really love
131
that Isabel has these moments where it's almost like she glitches a little bit Almost as
132
if the real Nikki maybe like enters chat before then going back Does your dad really have cancer?
133
No No, no, no, no,
134
no Frankie, sit down, sit down.
135
No!
136
Why does it matter?
137
What do you mean?
138
You lied to me.
139
I know we were having an escape!
140
We are.
141
We are.
142
We are.
143
She actually got the cops called on her because of this.
144
Because we're trying to look at the differences in each skill level, we look at Ada.
145
Beautiful breakdown.
146
Again, so emotionally available.
147
This isn't me saying that that moment didn't work, but it didn't come across as scary.
148
It came across as someone genuinely having their feelings really badly hurt.
149
Versus with Isabelle's, it actually feels like a demon is coming out of her body
150
and makes me terrified that she could be violent.
151
So far, I'm the only bear that has actually incorporated the environment.
152
Neither a swan or Alec had any aspect of the embarrassment of the environment getting to them.
153
I would also say I've probably had the most intense reaction to the breakdown from Nikki.
154
Alec didn't like really fully respond and change.
155
I think that's the key is that we need to see the freak out from Nikki change bear.
156
Then what is the matter?
157
It's funny because I said that Ada started the scene a little bit too much on the cusp of tears.
158
Meanwhile, I went and made the exact same mistake in my scene.
159
I love that complete change in tactic.
160
How she goes from like losing her shit.
161
Okay, you told me what I wanted.
162
Now I'm gonna change my tactic.
163
And with Ada, we didn't get as much of a tactic change.
164
It was just, I calmed down a little bit.
165
Why does it matter?
166
I love that we saw that tactic change with Isabelle.
167
There might be some of you that are thinking, Oh, but Ada nailed the scene a lot more than Isabel did in terms of like what they were looking for.
168
The goal of this video is to show how different actors
169
without any previous performance to try to base what they're gonna do off of, would interpret a scene differently.
170
Which doesn't mean one is good, one is bad.
171
Now, before we break down the original scene that broke the internet, how would you like to not only perform this scene yourself,
172
but also have the chance to perform this scene in front of the actual casting director of Obsession.
173
That's exactly what the students in my online acting group, The Acting Lab, get to do this summer with our Obsession-themed casting simulation.
174
Everyone in the group will get to record their own version of the scene that then me and my other coach,
175
Logan Riley Brunner, who has actually acted in even more projects than me,
176
will break down and give feedback on their auditions the exact same way that I'm doing now in this video,
177
before then shortlisting our favorite tapes to then show the casting director of Obsession.
178
Skylar will give all of our finalists feedback before then saying if she was recasting Obsession,
179
which actors she would hypothetically cast in a new version of this movie.
180
As if she's in charge of casting it all over again.
181
Now everyone in the group gets to meet Skylar.
182
You don't have to be a finalist just to be able to attend the call.
183
That will also act as a Q&A where you can ask some of your own questions, but obviously only our finalists will perform for her live,
184
which is not only an incredible learning but also an incredible exposure opportunity as well.
185
The deadline to take part in this simulation is Monday, July 20th of 2026.
186
Before then, the call with Skylar will be the following week on Sunday, July 26th.
187
And by the way, this is all on top of the several weekly classes taught by me personally, along with our second coach,
188
Logan Riley Brunner, feedback videos on audition tapes that you can post to the group, along with a acting course taught by me as well.
189
So if you'd like more details then click the link in the description or pinned comment.
190
You can also scan this QR code on screen right now.
191
If you join I look forward to not only meeting you in classes but also seeing your own version of this scene.
192
Finally let's go ahead and break down the original version of this scene with Indy Navarrete and Michael Johnston.
193
Everything okay?
194
Thank you.
195
Thank you.
196
What?
197
Never mind.
198
I have something for you.
199
Yeah, she's so like sweet girl next door energy the way that we start.
200
It doesn't necessarily feel immediately off the bat like she's actually psycho,
201
which is then gonna make her going psycho have that much more of a pop.
202
It's a tiger's eye.
203
Wow.
204
It was my mom's and then it was mine.
205
It's supposed to bring you confidence and willpower.
206
Some of that creepiness is slowly starting to peek out
207
because you'll notice she has a smile that doesn't quite reach her eyes.
208
And that's one of the easiest ways to immediately make your performance come off a little bit more unhinged and unsettling.
209
It's not so obvious that you're thinking immediately off rip, oof, there's something really wrong with that girl.
210
But it's enough that then when you watch it back, you can pick up on those little things.
211
And the best acting is the type of acting that every single time you watch it, you pick up something different, you pick up something new.
212
Bear, I love you so, so, so, so, so much.
213
I don't think I could live without you.
214
You love me more than anyone in the world?
215
Yes, more than anyone.
216
He's doing such a great job of truly just allowing Indy to be the engine of this scene.
217
It's so difficult as an actor to allow yourself to take a backseat in a scene.
218
It takes a lot of humility and it takes a lot of trust in yourself.
219
Michael Johnston is playing this way more subtle than I did, which is why it's so much better because I'm just drawing too much attention to myself.
220
I'm doing so much that it takes the focus off of Nikki and puts it onto both of us equally.
221
And this is a scene where we really want Nikki to shine.
222
You don't want Bear to really shine at all.
223
Michael's doing a phenomenal job of not drawing attention to himself, but still having a lot of depth.
224
Like you can still see in his eyes all of what he's thinking.
225
Nikki.
226
Yeah?
227
Does your dad really have cancer?
228
You fully see that fear and you see how unsettled he is by her
229
but he's also trying not to let her onto it.
230
I think I did such a bad job of not incorporating how I wanted Nikki to see me.
231
There are two levels to acting.
232
You have the version of acting where you're trying your best to make sure you give the audience what they need.
233
You wanna make sure that the audience has the experience that they need to have when watching the movie.
234
And then you have the layer of the character of what you want the other person across from you to see.
235
I really love that she's also letting that land.
236
No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. What?
237
No. No. No. No. No. Don't do that!
238
I thought we were having a nice date.
239
We are parents.
240
Why does it matter?
241
I thought we were having a nice date.
242
We are.
243
We are.
244
We are.
245
We are.
246
We are.
247
It's OK.
248
We are.
249
I love how she even adopts this almost inhuman physicality.
250
All of the Nickys were so focused on the delivery, they didn't care as much about the physical side of the performance.
251
Indy not only changed vocally, but she changed physically.
252
There's something very clearly off.
253
There's something so incredibly unhuman about her, but in the beginning It's just sweet innocent girl next door.
254
We are.
255
We are.
256
Then why does it matter?
257
Genuinely, I feel as though This is one of the top five performances I've seen.
258
I play off their rocker types of characters, which is why I appreciate what Indy did so much,
259
because as somebody frequently called to go there, I know how brutal and difficult it is to go there.
260
And she goes there in such a beautiful way with so many layers.
261
I genuinely believe this is 100% Oscar worthy,
262
and I hope that it being in a horror film doesn't lead to it getting shafted in the award circuit.
263
Now remember, if you want to perform this scene yourself, get feedback from me the exact way I gave feedback in this video,
264
and then meet and potentially perform in front of the real casting director of Obsession,
265
Skylar Zurm, then click the link in the description or pinned comment to join my online acting school, The Acting Lab.
266

About This Lesson
