Hello.
2
In this lesson, I'm going to show you how to improve and develop your IELTS speaking at home.
3
So many students tell me that they cannot improve their English because they don't have a foreigner to talk to.
4
So, I want to show you that it is possible to improve your speaking at home on your own for free.
5
Now the first thing I want you to do is to get a list of topics.
6
The common topics for Speaking Part 1 Speaking part two and speaking part three.
7
If you cannot find a list, please go to my IELTS blog.
8
www .ieltsliz .com And you will find a list of common topics,
9
difficult topics, and the questions as well.
10
So, you need to get a list of these topics and develop ideas.
11
I don't want you to write down your answers.
12
I want you only to develop the ideas.
13
So, for example, if the topic is the topic of weather, you can develop ideas about the kind of weather you like.
14
What you do when the weather is like that.
15
Also, how the weather makes you feel, different kinds of weather.
16
Or maybe the transportation problems that come because of that weather.
17
So, just develop ideas that you can use for that topic.
18
The next thing, number two, is a word list, so vocabulary.
19
If you have the topic of weather, you need to have a range of vocabulary for that topic.
20
So for example, hot weather.
21
"Hot" is a very low band score.
22
But you could use boiling.
23
scorching, sweltering.
24
There's a whole range of vocabulary that you can build to impress the examiner for that topic.
25
So you need to get that list of vocabulary and learn it.
26
So Number three, your next step to developing your speaking.
27
Get the topic, weather.
28
Choose probably about, let's say, six questions for that topic.
29
Take your telephone. And...
30
Answer the questions recording your voice.
31
It's very important that you do the recording rather than writing the answer.
32
When you write answers, Usually, you think more about the grammar, You think more about the vocabulary,
33
and often you make less mistakes.
34
When you speak, it's direct.
35
So when you record your answer, This gives you a chance to find your weaknesses.
36
Finding your weaknesses is very important so that you can improve.
37
So you need to record your answers to those questions on your phone.
38
After that I want you to listen to your answers.
39
Listen and check.
40
Now, there are four things that I want you to check for.
41
I want you to check for fluency, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation.
42
This is what the examiner will check you on.
43
Now, each one in the exam is 25 % of your marks.
44
So they're all equal, they are all very important.
45
And the examiner is going to check your answer for each one.
46
Now let's have a look at what you need to check for each one.
47
Fluency.
48
What does that mean?
49
Well, the first thing that you need to check is...
50
The length of your answer.
51
Thank you.
52
Did you give a very short answer or could you develop it a little bit more?
53
When you develop your answer a little bit more, That is a higher band score.
54
You're offering the examiner more language, but you're showing the ability to speak fluently.
55
So, develop your answer more, higher band score.
56
Yeah.
57
Another thing that you can check for your fluency is how many times you say Uh...
58
Uh...
59
These are hesitations and we don't want hesitations in our answer.
60
So you need to check how many "um" How many ahs?
61
that you have.
62
If you have a lot, That's a problem, I'm afraid.
63
And you need to find a way to practice more so that you get rid of The ums and as.
64
So we've got the length of answer and the ums and errs.
65
Another thing that you can check for fluency is how many times you are silent.
66
Often, when students start speaking, They can't remember what they want to say.
67
and suddenly they stop.
68
It is not good to stop and be silent in the middle of your answer.
69
You need to fill it.
70
You need to keep speaking naturally with a good flow.
71
and that will give you a good band score.
72
So, those are three things that you can check in your answer for your fluency.
73
- Thank you.
74
Now the next thing is vocabulary.
75
What do we need to check?
76
in the vocabulary for your answer.
77
Well obviously the first thing is the range.
78
And the range means how many different words are you using?
79
I'll give you an example, so paraphrasing.
80
- Thank you.
81
Are you repeating the same words again and again Or are you using different words?
82
to describe the same thing So, again, we use the example of hot, you could say boiling, scorching, "Sweltering".
83
Those are three different words that we can use for the meaning of hot.
84
So, you need to show a good range of vocabulary.
85
That's from your word list.
86
And you need to paraphrase and show the ability to use different words for the same meaning.
87
When you paraphrase well, you are looking at band score 7 and band score 8.
88
Another thing you can look at with the vocabulary, of course, Uh...
89
Thank you.
90
mistakes.
91
Now one way that you can check your mistakes is by when you listen to your answer.
92
Listen and write down the words that you say.
93
That way you can check more carefully if you're making any mistakes with words.
94
Are you using the wrong word?
95
Are you using the wrong noun with the verb?
96
What problems do you have?
97
So check that in your answer.
98
Another thing to look at of course, grammar.
99
And with grammar, you need to check again.
100
the range.
101
So for example the range of tenses.
102
Are you giving only present simple?
103
Now, I know maybe the six questions that you have are present simple questions.
104
But that doesn't mean that you can't give another tense.
105
So, for example, what kind of weather do you like?
106
I just love hot weather, scorching weather.
107
Last week it was perfect.
108
So it was a present simple question.
109
But I gave a little bit of past simple in the answer.
110
So, you can practise doing that and develop the technique of putting different tenses into your answer.
111
Another thing you can look at is sentence...
112
structure.
113
And that means how complex are your sentences.
114
Are you using a lot of short sentences?
115
So, don't forget, listen to your answer, write down the words that you're using, And then check how complex the sentences are.
116
You can perhaps start using some linkers.
117
I'll start extending the sentences And of course, another thing for grammar, again, are Thank you.
118
Mistakes.
119
This is very important.
120
The more mistakes you make, the lower your band score will be.
121
So, remember that the examiner is listening for mistakes with vocabulary and grammar.
122
So, please check what mistakes you're making and correct them and practice.
123
And of course, the last one is pronunciation.
124
So what is the examiner looking for pronunciation?
125
Well, the first one of course is Word pronunciation.
126
Are you pronouncing those words correctly.
127
If you're not sure about that You can go online.
128
There are free dictionaries online so that you can listen to the pronunciation of the word.
129
So check that and make sure your words are correct.
130
Another thing.
131
are individual sounds So for example: "sh, s, ch".
132
Are you pronouncing these sounds correctly?
133
And again, you can find practice online for that.
134
And one other thing for pronunciation.
135
Thank you. is Intonation.
136
Intonation is If your voice is going up and down,
137
or if you are speaking like this If you're speaking very flat, This is not good for your band score.
138
You need to learn to use
139
intonation in your voice We often use intonation to make something more interesting or to show when something is important.
140
So you can practice that at home and try to improve it.
141
Now, the last part, the last thing, once you have Got your topics and your ideas?
142
You've got your vocabulary for the topic, you have your questions and you record them, you listen You check your answer.
143
Don't forget you can write down the answer to check what you say.
144
Write down the words you're using.
145
Check your fluency, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation.
146
And then After that, practice practice and practice.
147
Find your weakness, Get rid of your weakness.
148
Improve your strength.
149
You can practice and record again.
150
Don't forget to keep recording your voice.
151
Keep recording your answers.
152
Get used to that.
153
I know it can feel uncomfortable to sit in a room alone and record but really It's good practice.
154
You need to do it.
155
Right, well, that's all for this lesson.
156
I really hope that you practice this At home.
157
Honestly, the more you practice, the better your IELTS will be, particularly if you check your answers correctly.
158
Well, keep practicing.
159
Good luck, and I'll see you in another IELTS lesson.
