1
Substation transformers or power transformers, these are the biggest and most expensive piece of equipment in a substation.
2
You're typically looking in a transmission substation.
3
You'd be looking at power transformers that cost $3 million, $5 million, or maybe even a little more than that.
4
The size of these are, think, railway cars or maybe three quarters of a railway car, or half of a semi-truck trailer, for example.
5
They are big pieces of equipment.
6
And what we see here is down in the tank, we see the windings and the cores.
7
So once again, substations are always three-phase, just like the transmission lines are always three-phases.
8
A, B, and C transformers, they are typically three-phase.
9
Now, you could run into situations in which you actually have three separate transformers, one for each phase.
10
You might see that outside of a large generating station where you've got these big step-up transformers.
11
They could be in three separate tanks.
12
But in general, it's more common to see all three phases in the same tank.
13
And in this tank, you've got a lot of mineral oil, which is providing cooling and insulation.
14
And the windings are generally insulated and they have paper insulation usually.
15
And then there's some cooling mechanisms, including radiators and fans.
16
And some transformers actually had pumps on them to pump the oil through the radiator.
17
So keeping a transformer cool is required because of the vast amounts of current that is passing through the conductors, creating heat.
18
And like I said before, heat and moisture are power equipment's worst enemies.
19
Radiators, fans, pumps, they all serve to help cool the transformer.
20
You see the large bushings and you actually see some surge arresters here as well.
21
They will be frequently mounted to protect the transformer from transient over voltages and traveling waves.
22
And this oil conservator is just an expansion tank and serves a couple other purposes,
23
but really provides room for the oil to expand because the oil will expand, the mineral oil, it will expand as it heats up.
24
And let me point out that these three large bushings that you see here, they would be on the high voltage side.
25
I do see places where the lower voltage bushings would be, and that would be right here, but these may be the bushings,
26
but they're awful small and they would be right here
27
so you got a total of six bushings three on the high side
28
and three on the low side
29
and once again bushings are the transition point in this case between the tank containing all the oil
30
and the air where the overhead lines are coming in

  • "And what we see here is down in the tank": "What we see here is..."

  • "Mineral oil": La "a" in "mineral" è corta (/ˈmɪnərəl/), e "oil" è /ɔɪl/.
