Welcome to the A vowel pair! These two sounds look similar on paper but feel completely different in the mouth.
The two stars of this unit
- /ɑː/ — a long, open, deep vowel. Think of the sound you make when a doctor asks you to open wide: "Aaaah".
- /ʌ/ — a short, clipped, neutral vowel. Quick, relaxed, and central in the mouth.
Why learners mix them up
Both vowels live in the lower-central area of the vowel chart, so the tongue position is close. The big differences are length and mouth openness.
Quick tips
- For /ɑː/, drop your jaw, relax your lips, and hold the sound.
- For /ʌ/, barely open your mouth, keep your tongue relaxed, and cut the sound short.
- Compare father (/ɑː/) with butter (/ʌ/) to feel the contrast.
