5
In this video we're going to be looking at different accents in Harry Potter.
6
A lot of people when they think of British accents they think of Harry Potter.
7
So I thought it'd be really cool to have a look at some scenes from Harry Potter
8
and see what we can learn from the different accents in the films.
9
And the first scene I've chosen is from the first film.
10
It's where Harry is just about to go on the Hogwarts Express train to go to Hogwarts school.
11
Okay, if you've seen the film you'll know about this.
12
So let's have a look at this scene together.
13
I'm only joking.
14
I am Fred.
15
Excuse me.
16
Okay, so notice the way he says excuse me even though excuse it starts with the letter E,
17
but it's actually pronounced excuse Excuse me.
18
We stress the excuse part Excuse me.
19
That's the first thing he says.
20
Could you tell me how to...
21
How to get onto the platform?
22
It's not too well indeed.
23
It's Ron's first time to Hogwarts as well.
24
Now all you've got to do is walk straight at the wall between platforms 9 and 10.
25
Best do it as a bit of a run with you, Alice.
26
Notice the way she says Hogwarts.
27
This is using the very British sound.
28
Oh, hog, Hogwarts.
29
If it was American English it would be hog, but here it's hog, Hogwarts.
30
Okay, she also says walk into the wall.
31
You get this long OR vowel sound.
32
Walk into the wall.
33
Okay, so let's see how he does that.
34
Good luck!
35
Excuse me?
36
Do you mind?
37
Everywhere else is full.
38
Not at all.
39
Okay, so Ron is coming into the train and he speaks in a different way to Harry.
40
Harry speaks in a very clear way.
41
He speaks in very proper English, a little bit posh English.
42
But Ron speaks in a much more casual way.
43
So again, he said, excuse me.
44
Then instead of saying, do you mind?
45
He said, do you, do you mind?
46
So this do is shortened to do you mind?
47
Do you mind?
48
And then he goes and sits down.
49
I'm Ron, by the way.
50
Ron Weasley.
51
I'm Harry.
52
Harry Potter.
53
So here you can clearly hear the difference in the way they speak.
54
Harry has more of a standard received pronunciation accent and Ron speaks in a more casual way.
55
So when he says by the way, he says it sounds like by the why, by the why, by the why.
56
and Harry Potter.
57
When people think of the British accent, they think of Harry Potter, right?
58
So he actually pronounces both of the T's in Harry Potter.
59
Harry Potter.
60
He doesn't say Harry Potter.
61
He says Harry Potter.
62
And again, he gets this very British O sound in the middle
63
Potter And then it has an U at the end O U Potter
64
Harry Potter So he's pronouncing this in a very proper way So, so it's true?
65
I mean, do you really have the.. the...
66
The what?
67
Even when he says the what, he doesn't say the what.
68
A lot of people, when they were saying what, they would say what, what.
69
Like, what you mean?
70
What are you doing?
71
But he says what, pronouncing the T again, speaking very properly.
72
So there's an example of British slang.
73
In the Harry Potter films, you get a lot of very British slang words.
74
Wicked means something that's really cool or really good.
75
It's not really said so much nowadays, but probably it was back then.
76
Anything off the trolley dears?
77
No, thanks.
78
I'm all set.
79
So he says, I'm all set.
80
What does all set mean?
81
It means I've got everything I need.
82
I don't need anything else.
83
So that's what he's meaning here.
84
We'll take the lot.
85
Again he said lot, pronouncing that oh sound again and the t at the end of the word lot, lot.
86
Whoa, Bertie Bot's every flavour beans, they mean every flavour.
87
There's chocolate and peppermint and there's also spinach, liver and tripe.
88
So listen to the way he says tripe here.
89
So, tribe is talking about internal organs of animals.
90
And he pronounces it like tripe, tripe, tripe, instead of tripe.
91
So, it's a slight difference in the accent.
92
And the way he says also is also quite interesting.
93
He doesn't say also.
94
He shortens this to also, also.
95
So, some people will do this.
96
They will drop sounds in the middle of words when they speak.
97
It's not strictly standard British pronunciation, but it's what a lot of people will do.
98
George sweared he got a bogey flavoured one month.
99
What does bogey mean?
100
He's talking about the snot that comes out of your nose.
101
The bean is bogey flavoured.
102
These aren't real frogs are they?
103
It's just a spell.
104
Besides, it's the card you want.
105
Each pack's got a famous switch to a wizard.
106
Again, so he says want.
107
Want, he doesn't say want, he drops the T at the end of the word, it changes to a glottal stop.
108
Want, want, like that.
109
About 500 meself.
110
Watch it!
111
That's rotten luck.
112
I've only got one good jump in them to begin with.
113
I've got Dumbledore!
114
I got about six of him.
115
So.. has anyone seen a toad?
116
So notice the way she says toad, she uses this long diphthong sound, oh.
117
And if you want to speak in a very native-like British accent, you need to get these diphthong sounds right.
118
The long sounds like oh, oi, and other sounds like that.
119
These are very important.
120
A boy named Neville's lost one.
121
No. Oh, are you doing magic?
122
Let's see then.
123
Sunshine, daisies, butter mellow.
124
Turn this stupid fat right yellow.
125
Are you sure that's a real spell?
126
So notice the way she says sure here.
127
Again, this or diphthong sound very characteristic to British English.
128
Some people would also pronounce this sure, sure, but she says sure.
129
Are you sure?
130
Well it's not very good is it? Of course.
131
So you'll notice that Hermione also speaks in a very proper way.
132
She says all the t's at the end of her words.
133
Instead of is it, she says is it, is it, with the t sound at the end of the word.
134
I've only tried a few simple ones myself but they will work for me.
135
She really emphasizes the word simple ones myself.
136
Getting the right emphasis is also very important in English.
137
Example!
138
Notice the way she says for example this ah sound is a very long vowel sound characteristic of received pronunciation.
139
Ah you don't get this in American English.
140
Example.
141
R. Oculus Repair Room.
142
That's better, isn't it?
143
Isn't it?
144
Again, she pronounces the first T, but not the last T.
145
She doesn't say isn't it.
146
She says isn't it.
147
Bickett, you're Harry Potter.
148
I'm Hermione Granger.
149
Again, she says Potter.
150
Potter.
151
and that's that word again Harry Potter and you are?
152
um Ron Measley pleasure you two better change into your robes I expect we'll be arriving soon
153
and she's got this robes this oh long diphthong sound robes means the magic cape that you wear
154
you've got dirt on your nose by the way did you know?
155
Just that.
156
And listen to the way she says dirt.
157
Again, ur.
158
This is a very British sound.
159
Dirt.
160
Dirt on your nose.
161
So, this is used a lot in received pronunciation in words like her, shirt, and dirt.
162
So, another sound to pay attention to.
163
So, we've looked at Harry Potter, Ron, and Hermione.
164
But there are actually a lot of different British accents that you'll hear in Harry Potter.
165
Because as you know, the British accent, it's not one accent.
166
There are loads of different accents in different parts of the UK.
167
So let's listen on and see what else we can hear from some different scenes.
168
Can you imagine the look on McGonagall's face if we were late?
169
Perhaps it would be more useful if I were to transfigure Mr. Potter and yourself into a pocket watch.
170
So here you can hear Professor McGonagall.
171
She has a very posh, or you could say upper class kind of accent.
172
And it sounds like she's almost not opening her mouth fully
173
when she speaks because she's trying to speak very precisely just like that.
174
Perhaps it would be more useful.
175
She speaks a little bit more like that.
176
And she uses the word transfigure.
177
What does that mean?
178
It means to change something into something else by magic.
179
I'm a rabbit passing home.
180
What's Seamus trying to do to that glass of water?
181
Turn it to rum?
182
So you can see this boy here.
183
What kind of accent did he have?
184
He has an Irish accent.
185
His name is Seamus in the books.
186
And this is another example of a regional accent
187
that you can hear in Harry One of the sounds you can hear is the R, R.
188
In the Irish accent you get more of an R sound than in a standard receipt pronunciation.
189
I do the counter curse.
190
You just set my bloody kneecaps on fire.
191
I don't appreciate the insinuation alone, but my eyebrows have completely grown back.
192
You can hear here he says curse.
193
In standard receipt pronunciation this would be curse, but in this Irish accent it's curse.
194
Curse it's got more of an er sound in it more of a erotic sound
195
And you can also hear that he says eyebrows instead of saying ow in this word eyebrows He says eyebrows
196
Brows is more of the Irish pronunciation
197
Stop stop stop You're going to take someone's eye out.
198
Besides, you're saying it wrong.
199
It's leviosa, not leviosa.
200
Okay, so these are actually made-up magic words, right?
201
But she uses this R sound again.
202
I talked about this as a very important sound in the British accent.
203
And she's talking about the stress of the word, leviosa.
204
So, stress is very important in English.
205
You need to put the stress on the right part of the word in order to sound like a native.
206
I talk about this in some of my other videos as well.
207
Check this out weeks ago for a bit of light reading.
208
This is light.
209
Then I'll let them to Dumbledore to guard the...
210
Yes.
211
Shouldn't have said that.
212
No more questions.
213
Don't ask any more questions.
214
What that dog is guarding is strictly between Professor Dumbledore and Nicolas Flamel.
215
So Hagrid has a very unique accent in this series of films as well
216
because he has a slight west country
217
or southwestern accent from the southwest of England
218
and this is what's called erotic accent
219
so he will pronounce the R's in words so instead of saying guarding he will say guarding,
220
garden, garden like that so this is one of the features of this accent.
221
Instead of saying that dog, he would say that dog.
222
Dog.
223
Dog.
224
It's more of an ah sound, almost like an American accent, but this is a regional accent in the UK.
225
So as I said, you can hear different accents in this film.
226
Starting is strictly between Professor Dumbledore and Nicolas Flamel.
227
Nicolas Flamel?
228
I shouldn't have said that.
229
I should not have said that.
230
Instead of saying not he said not I should not have said that.
231
Okay, so this is his unique accent Well,
232
you have to be trained up a bit of course Okay, so I really hope you enjoyed this video
233
and you learned something new about British accents

  • Do you mind?:「大丈夫ですか?」。カジュアルな場面では「Do you mind?」(「do」が短縮され、「ドゥ ユー マインド?」となります)。
  • Posh English:「上品な英語」。ハリーのように清楚で正確な発音のことを指します。
  • Casual way:「カジュアルな話し方」。ロンのように短縮された表現やくだけた発音が特徴です。

練習のコツ

英語の発音を良くするためには、shadowspeak(シャドーイング)が非常に効果的です。
