They're back.
34
hi i'm anita joyce here with kelly wilkness and this is decorating tips
35
and tricks today we are talking about dated color pairings
36
that are back
37
and doesn't this happen a lot kelly colors are in they're
38
out they're in they're out sometimes my head is just spinning with all the changes in the colors.
39
Well, yeah.
40
I mean, every year we've got the colors of the year and more and more people are doing colors of the year.
41
Even spray paint had a color of the year this year.
42
So I don't know.
43
Yeah.
44
Everybody's trying to sell their colors, but I think in design about every 10 years, things start to come back.
45
But with these that we're going to talk about today, I think they were very well out and we have not seen these color pairings in a while.
46
So this is kind of getting dusted off and coming back.
47
The gray just took over for so long.
48
And, you know, I liked the gray in the beginning, but then I saw it used so badly.
49
And I just, it became nails on a chalkboard.
50
It was just, no, no, no. And so I, with everyone else was so sick of it and so ready for it to go.
51
So it is so refreshing to me to see all the color.
52
I think it's taking a while for people to move their homes this direction, but it's definitely out there in the design world and has been for a while.
53
Oh yeah.
54
Color is here.
55
It hadn't been here for so long.
56
We had all the beige and neutrals, the grays, as you mentioned, and what some designers called the blandification of home design.
57
Ouch.
58
Yeah, but we loved it.
59
We all embraced it and neutrals are beautiful.
60
Even all white rooms can be beautiful done well.
61
Grays can be beautiful done well.
62
It's that when we were just doing that and nothing else, it was really boring.
63
And then color comes back and then people are edging into color.
64
And we've talked a lot about how you can start adding color back into your house.
65
Anita's embraced it full throttle.
66
But people are craving more personality, more contrast, more emotion and more fun.
67
And I truly believe the pallets that we're talking about today are coming back because people are craving some nostalgia.
68
We don't need to get into it.
69
And we don't
70
because you are here to free your mind from a lot of the thing that's going on in the bigger world, right?
71
We are here focused on beautiful design and having some laughs and building community with you.
72
So we don't get into all of that.
73
But frankly, it's pretty stressful out there.
74
And I think people are looking for anything,
75
even color palettes, to feel comforted and nostalgic for maybe what they remember to be some better times.
76
So some of these colors, in fact, I think all of these color palettes I have seen before and more nostalgic days.
77
This is really more a fun discussion
78
and it gets you thinking about what color you might want to add to your house.
79
What color combinations would work well in your home?
80
So don't feel like you have to follow these exactly.
81
Think of this as kind of a starting point, a jumping off point as it were.
82
Okay, so color pairing number one.
83
Anita is going to kick it off.
84
This one is definitely nostalgic for me and I definitely won't be using it in my home but let's talk about it.
85
Teal and orange and I had the same feeling I did the peach
86
and blue back in the day and I'm not going back.
87
Orange just isn't my color.
88
I might add it some but it's just never going to be a big color in my house.
89
So this color pairing did have a big moment in 2010
90
and it was an interiors fashion graphic design and then boof it was gone and now it's back.
91
But now it's here with a richer, moodier, really more sophisticated energy.
92
And trend forecaster WGSN named transformative teal its 2026 color of the year.
93
So this comeback definitely has some oomph to it.
94
Teal and orange are very close to complementary colors, which means they naturally create some tension and balance.
95
The teal does bring some depth and coolness to the room and the orange add some warmth.
96
So it really is a nice vibrancy that it brings to the room.
97
Some specific pairings you could use
98
if you want to use this color combination you can go with dusty teal
99
and burnt orange or you can use a blue green with a terracotta.
100
You can use a moody teal with a rusty velvet
101
or even a soft sage teal with a cognac leather and you can use this really in any room in your house.
102
I mean, a living room, a library, dining room, really, it doesn't matter where you add it.
103
You can start with pillows.
104
Really, that's what I like to do if I'm adding some new color is just start with pillows and throws.
105
That's the easiest thing that you can add and take away from a room.
106
Another thing would be if you found some beautiful artwork that you just loved and that had the color in it, I think that would be a great way to go too.
107
But as I said, I'm not going to be throwing my stuff out and going with these colors.
108
So what do you think, Kelly?
109
I just want to order Howard Johnson's hot dog and then a clown sundae.
110
You went way back.
111
Yeah, I know.
112
I just can't.
113
I don't like teal.
114
I do like orange.
115
I definitely like orange.
116
I don't like teal.
117
I never have.
118
But that combination makes me think of where my grandma used to take me for lunch.
119
And I would get a yummy hot dog where they buttered the bun and then a clown sundae.
120
So that was all great.
121
But on their logo, I was definitely drawn to it.
122
But I would not want to have that in my house.
123
But I like these updated versions of it that you suggested.
124
The dusty teal and a burnt orange sounds really great.
125
And I could see this working in someone's house.
126
It's just not for me.
127
As Manita mentioned, this is a conversation about what's happening out there, kind of like a trend episode.
128
So we're just letting you know what's happening out there in the greater world.
129
That combination or the other combinations we're talking about today might not float your boat,
130
but it might get you thinking about other colors that you might be emboldened to then try.
131
so another pairing that's coming back and I really like this
132
and I get I'm really pulling from the way back Kelly machine
133
because I had a top that I loved it must have been like fourth grade
134
and it was pink ribbed and then it had a red turtleneck
135
and like you know how when they kind of like serge the edge
136
and it's kind of like a little ruffled and it had red thread on the sleeves.
137
And I just loved this top for whatever reason.
138
I have no idea what happened to it.
139
At some point along the line, I outgrew it, I'm sure, because I was only in fourth grade.
140
If you still had it, I would be calling for some intervention.
141
So there was a time when people thought these colors clashed.
142
I mean, clearly, I didn't think they clashed, nor did my mom, I guess.
143
But designers use them constantly.
144
You talk about whether they clash or not.
145
I think you have to be using the right red.
146
If you're using a blue red, a very cool red, I think it's going to work.
147
But if you're going with the orangey red, I don't think that's going to work so well with the pink.
148
It really just depends.
149
But then sometimes I see orange and pink together and I like it.
150
So you really have to be careful about putting these two together.
151
But I do love them also.
152
And I think they're a great color combination.
153
And the interesting thing is that these are not complementary, but they're very close to each other.
154
Yes, right.
155
So designers are using them because of the effect is warm, playful, glamorous, which I guess is what I thought I was in my little turtleneck.
156
And surprisingly chic.
157
Pink and red are neighbors on the color wheel.
158
So instead of high contrast, you kind of get a tonal relationship.
159
And again, as Anita pointed out, it really depends on what pink and what red you choose but they are neighbors.
160
It makes a room feel layered because it's more tonal rather than complementaries, which are opposite, romantic, and a little unexpected.
161
You could use this really anywhere, but I think it could be really great in a child's room,
162
in a dining room, because red in a dining room has always been spectacular and can be really chic in a bedroom.
163
I don't think I'd use pink and red necessarily in a living room, but you could.
164
So updated looks for this combination, a blush and an oxblood.
165
So a really deep, deep, almost brownish type of red.
166
Dusty rose and a brick red.
167
Ballet pink and terracotta.
168
So that's kind of getting to your orange and pink, Anita.
169
And then a warm pink and a wine red.
170
That's what I would, if I had to characterize that turtleneck, I would say it was a warm pink and a wine red.
171
Easiest way to try it?
172
Of course, the pillows and the throws. So easy.
173
But pink walls, it's not like making your walls teal.
174
A pink wall is a little bit easier to digest, so to speak, and a little bit easier to work with the rest of your house.
175
there is that setting plaster pink from Farrow and Ball that if you're looking at design magazines, you're probably seeing everywhere.
176
And that is a very, very soft pink.
177
I mean, it's almost like in some rooms kind of looks like Band-Aid color, but it is pink.
178
And so you could do something like that on your walls or just a very, very soft sort of whisper of a pink
179
and then add some red accents in a bedroom pink bedding with red throw pillows,
180
red dining room chairs, and maybe some art that has some pink in it, or a neutral room with the pink and red textiles layered in.
181
I think that would be the best way to use this, especially if you were starting out to add in color.
182
So whatever textiles you would think about throws, pillows, rug, things like that you could add in.
183
Or even if you're talking about a dining room, maybe you just do a runner in pink and red or fabric placemats or something like that.
184
So there are easy ways to add this in.
185
And I think it's kind of a lot less jarring than the teal and orange.
186
So it might be a good starter.
187
well I like it oh boy I have a confession I think I bought a red
188
and pink dress several months ago
189
and forgot to wear it I know well today's the day
190
I think you should go put it on oh my goodness
191
I know I know I'm thinking oh my gosh where is
192
that dress so um it's there somewhere it must be in there
193
but I think it's a wonderful color combination
194
and I'm finding as I'm adding more color to my house
195
that the reds really do add an oomph that you're missing if you don't have some sort of red in your home.
196
So I really like the idea of the red and pink.
197
And I think if you just have blues and greens, which I have a lot of blue in my house,
198
you really ought to think about maybe some red or pink or something along those lines to put in there,
199
because I think it's going to give it a real fresh feeling that you're going to love.
200
You know a great rug is literally the foundation of your decor.
201
And if you have kids, pets, or humans living in your house, you know rugs basically become ground zero for every spill, stain, and disaster.
202
That's why we're obsessed with Tumble Rugs.
203
Tumble makes spill-proof, stylish, machine-washable rugs designed for real life.
204
Tumble rugs feature a proprietary spill-proof surface that causes liquids to beat up on top of the rug.
205
So instead of soaking into the fibers like most rugs, you can literally wipe spills away in seconds.
206
It's kind of magical.
207
And when you need a deeper clean, tumble rugs are fully machine washable, even the larger sizes.
208
And all tumble rugs are made with non-toxic materials.
209
I have the Lisa tumble.
210
It is absolutely gorgeous.
211
And it stands up to my three dogs and my humans.

235
That's quince.com.dtt So the next color combination is purple and green Honestly,
236
this has always been one of my favorite ones Not necessarily for decor, but I've just always loved these two colors together Maybe it's
237
because they're complementary colors And they're kind of across from each other on the color wheel
238
But there's something about them together that I've always loved But you know, purple's one of my favorite colors But green just goes so well with it
239
and so the green maybe makes you think of nature purple may make you think of royalty I don't know
240
if that has something to do with it
241
but they just work well together how about aubergine and olive
242
or you could even go with a plum and a sage maybe lavender
243
and moss mulberry and eucalyptus or even a dusty lilac
244
and a muted gray green there's so many different options
245
when you're putting these two colors together
246
and you can use them in a hallway
247
or a library a powder room bedroom I think you might even be able to find some beautiful wallpaper
248
that have these two colors in them you could find some upholstered accent pieces
249
and you could even just use one color maybe the green would be better as more the dominant color
250
and just put in the purple in accents because I love purple
251
but the thought of putting it on the wall makes me a little bit nervous
252
so I have not gone with that as a wall color.
253
Yeah.
254
I thought about it though.
255
Well, I think that in a powder room, you could definitely do it.
256
I like your idea of finding a wallpaper that has these colors in it.
257
When I think of these colors, I think of you.
258
I know there's blues in your mix for sure.
259
And maybe some pinks, but purple and green, I need springs to mind with those colors.
260
So, and being of spring, it's also a great combination out in the garden.
261
So in nature, you see there's a lot of purple plants, flowering plants.
262
And then of course, green is everywhere outside.
263
So purple and green, I think also has this very, even though we were talking about it, it's royalty and opulent and whatnot.
264
The green and purple combination, I think also has this sense of nature and spring and new beginnings.
265
So I think it's really lovely on lots of levels.
266
I agree with you.
267
I wouldn't necessarily go whole hog on purple walls, but I could see an aubergine powder room.
268
I would maybe do this because it's a very bold combination in a smaller scale.
269
So in a smaller space, maybe a study powder room, something like that, even a laundry room in these colors.
270
Well, and it's not purple, but I actually have some green lamps and I have a pink printed lampshade on top of those.
271
And of course, yes, it is a pair I have in the room, but the pink and the green work well together too, even though that's not one of the ones we're talking about, but it's very close.
272
That's really pretty together.
273
Yeah.
274
I love the pink green.
275
Oh, so classic.
276

Really fun ways to add some colors that we haven't seen for a while into our homes.
298
So easy ways to test this trend without a big commitment.
299
Maybe you've got some of these colors somewhere hidden in your storage bins.
300
Maybe you've got some teal pillow covers. Who knows?
301
If you've held onto them, maybe it's time to pull them out and test them.
302
So pillows, throws, lampshades, now that we're seeing so many more colorful lampshades and lampshades with pattern,
303
some art, vases, trays, even spines of books, small upholstered stools.
304
So just start in small spaces
305
and think about how you might want to just really amp up the colors that you're using in your home.
306
And it certainly doesn't have to be the three combinations that we talked about today.
307
We're just seeing these on the designer trend horizon and we wanted to bring them to your attention.
308
So I would use it as sort of a jumping off
309
point to think about what may be more bolder color combinations that you would like to have in your home.
310
And you learn something if you didn't already know it today about where the colors fall on the color wheel.
311
I believe we have a whole episode about the color wheel somewhere in the dusty archives.
312
So if you're not familiar with that, that's a good thing to learn about because that you kind of make, it makes sense when you understand how the color wheel works,
313
why certain colors, even though they're so different, seem to really work well as a pair.
314
Well, we have a whole episode just on working with complimentary colors.
315
So I'll link that as well.
316
We've covered it all.
317
Well, we've been doing this since 2017.
318
It's been a while.
319
And you know, I know you know, Anita, but there are many people that have been with us since day one.
320
And we couldn't appreciate those people more.
321
And we appreciate you if you just started listening to us last week.
322
So it's so wonderful to have you with us.
323
The community that we have built with our listeners
324
and then our consult clients really is something we couldn't even have imagined
325
how much satisfaction and pleasure and delight we were going to get from
326
that when we started this because we didn't know how this was going to go.
327
And when you take the time to leave a review, it truly touches our hearts.
328
And it makes us feel bad if you leave a not nice review.
329
Oh, Kelly, don't say that.
330
We can take that out.
331
But when you take the time to leave a review and let us know that where you're listening to us,
332
where you're taking us, whether it's walking your dog or driving to work or wherever you're going.
333
And we have had some that really have tugged at the heartstrings.
334
People who said that we've gotten them through hard times
335
or dropping their kid off at college and driving 17 hours back home.
336
All the people that are listening to us for all these hours, we appreciate so much.
337
So we just wanted to acknowledge a couple of people
338
that have recently left reviews for us because if you took the time, we want to take the time to thank you and acknowledge you on air.
339
Well, and if you've left a review a long time ago, we appreciate you also.
340
I feel like sometimes we focus on the new reviews, but we have listeners who have been with us since the beginning.
341
I see their notes all the time when they email us,
342
and I'm just so honored that you listened to us and that you've been continuing to listen to us all this time.
343
Thank you so much.
344
So what's your crush?
345
It's another video.
346
But you know what?
347
When I say that, it sounds like I'm putting it down.
348
But these videos are so inspiring, so beautiful, so peaceful, so relaxing to watch.
349
I think it's just wonderful to have great videos to watch.
350
So this one, you might have seen it.
351
It's Bunny Williams, New York City apartment.
352
Have you seen that?
353
Yes, yes, yes.
354
It's really beautiful, though.
355
And if you haven't seen it, I think it's worth a watch.
356
Everybody can learn something from Buddy Williams for sure.
357
Her books are fabulous as well.
358
I have a podcast, Ill-Advised by Bill Nye.
359
You will recognize Bill Nye if you don't recognize his name when you see his face.
360
He's in lots and lots of movies and shows.
361
Oh, I love him.
362
Oh, he's funny.
363
He's so funny.
364
He's so wry.
365
He just has this way about him.
366
so the title is ill-advised
367
and he'll just say in the beginning like i don't really have anything
368
that i'm sure that i'm telling you
369
but we're just here we're gonna waste some time together
370
and have a little break
371
and it is funny it is um very seems very feels
372
very spontaneous like he is just off the cuff he answers some questions there are maybe three
373
or four segments then he does a band word list where people write in words that they don't want to hear anymore.
374
Oh, and then he says them.
375
Oh, he says them.
376
And then he says, oh, well, now we've put them on the band word list.
377
And then he has a segment where he recommends books.
378
And then when he does a little playlist and it maybe has like three or four songs that he'll tell you about, and they list them all in the show notes.
379
So if you wanted to go check out the song or add it to your player, then you could do that.
380
It's funny.
381
I laugh out loud.
382
There's just something about him I absolutely adore.
383
He seems like a very, very smart man.
384
And I think to be funny, you have to be very smart.
385
And I just really vibe with him.
386
So I think you might really enjoy it as well.
387
Oh, I definitely will.
388
I love a good podcast recommendation.
389
And I mean, how many more times can I listen to Decorating Tips and Tricks?
390
So I have to broaden my horizons a little bit.
391
So Ill-Advised by Bill Nye.
392
We'll link it in the show notes.
393
And this is season two.
394
So if it's new to you, you have a whole season one to listen to and catch up on.
395
Oh, good.
396
Okay.
397
So you said they really don't talk about much, which reminds me, my podcast crush from long ago was Graham Norton.
398
And he would interview a celebrity and then he would answer listener questions with his friend, Maria McCurlin.
399
And that was my favorite part.
400
I didn't really care to hear the celebrities talking.
401
That was boring, boring, boring.
402
But his conversations with his friend, Maria McCurlin, which were just off the cuff, were the best part
403
and I'm going to give an extra crush while we're here.
404
So because he has a brand new podcast, I mean, new and maybe the last six months or so where he and Maria McCurlin, that's just the whole episode.
405
I think I'm not the only one that found their chitter chatter just to be hilarious.
406
So now it's just all people writing in with their not
407
so great advice as they put it and it's called wanging on and they just answer these questions and it's pretty funny.
408
They've even added an extra part where it's called, Am I Weird?
409
Which is some weird stuff.
410
Okay.
411
Yeah, but it's very fun to listen to.
412
They're very funny.
413
But I cannot wait to hear this new one with Bill Nye.
414
Yeah, yeah.
415
I think you'll really like it.
416
Oh, Double Crush.
417
What a day.
418
All right, well, try some of these color pairings that are back
419

発音を良くするコツ:アクセントのポイント

この動画のスピーカーは自然な会話調で話しているので、「shadow speak」(シャドーイング)の練習に最適です。特に注意すべきはイントネーションの上げ下げです。疑問文では末尾を上げるだけでなく、「I mean, every year we've got...」
