In this video, you're going to practice your listening comprehension skills with slow, natural English.
2
If you're an intermediate English learner who thinks that textbook English is too formal or unrealistic,
3
but videos and podcasts for native speakers are too difficult or too fast right now,
4
then this lesson is for you.
5
This will be a casual podcast-style lesson about an everyday topic.
6
This is a great way to learn real-life vocabulary in context
7
while learning something new about life and culture here in the United States.
8
You can watch this video with or without subtitles.
9
And remember, you can change the speed of the video.
10
This lesson also comes with a free PDF with a full transcript and a breakdown section with key vocabulary words and expressions.
11
So when you see a box like this, you know that you can find an explanation and more examples in the PDF.
12
You can find the link in the description below this video.
13
So relax, get a snack or a drink, and let's get started.
14
For many people in the U.S., our lives have become a cycle of just going to work and coming back home,
15
Maybe with an occasional trip to the grocery store or the doctor's office.
16
I want you to think of a place where you can spend time that's neither at home nor at work.
17
A place where you can relax, hang out with friends, or just be around other people.
18
Where is this place for you?
19
Where do you go to meet new people or connect with people you already know?
20
Maybe you don't really have a place like that.
21
And if that's the case, you're not alone.
22
So I'm really interested in sociology,
23
which is basically the science of how people live and interact in groups.
24
And the other day, I was reading an article online about a popular concept in sociology called third spaces.
25
A third space is a public place where people can meet and socialize informally.
26
So this is a social environment that exists outside of the first space,
27
which is at home, and the second space, which is at work.
28
Common examples of third spaces include a local coffee shop, the library, the mall, the park,
29
etc. Third spaces are really important because they give us a sense of community.
30
This is the feeling that you're part of something bigger.
31
It feels good to belong to a group of people who respect and support each other, right?
32
Well, unfortunately, times have changed and these places are slowly disappearing across the U.S.
33
But why is this happening?
34
Why are these places disappearing?
35
And how is this affecting our communities and our lives.
36
Here's my two cents.
37
Here's my opinion about this.
38
I think one of the biggest reasons is the infrastructure of transportation in the U.S.
39
We use the word infrastructure to talk about all the basic systems that a place needs to function properly,
40
like roads, electricity, hospitals, and so on.
41
Okay, let me explain.
42
You can live in an urban area or in a rural area, but there's another huge area in the middle.
43
In the U.S., the general name for any area between the city and the countryside is the suburbs.
44
And in fact, this is the area where most Americans live.
45
Suburbs are basically smaller towns outside of larger cities.
46
I was born and raised in a suburb of Buffalo, New York, and now I live in another suburb of Raleigh, North Carolina.
47
The important thing here is that suburbs are residential.
48
This means that suburban areas have many homes where people and families live,
49
but they usually don't have many offices or businesses.
50
So many people who live in the suburbs typically commute to the nearest large city for work.
51
And how do they commute?
52
Well, they have to drive because there's usually little to no public transportation in,
53
to, or from suburban areas.
54
So because most of America is suburban, it means that you need a car to go anywhere.
55
No, it's not because we're lazy, even though I am lazy sometimes.
56
It's mostly because walkable communities don't exist in most areas outside of large cities in the US.
57
For example, if I want to take my dog for a walk at the nearest park, I have two options.
58
I can drive there in five minutes, or I can walk there in two hours.
59
If you ask me, it's a no-brainer.
60
I'd rather drive to the park, especially in the summer when it's 100 degrees outside.
61
Well, 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
62
What's that in Celsius?
63
Anyway, that brings me to another reason why third spaces are declining.
64
The rise of technology.
65
Technology has really impacted the way we do a lot of things.
66
There's online shopping, online dating,
67
working from home, etc. And this has many pros and cons.
68
The biggest pro or advantage is that we can communicate with anyone, anywhere, anytime.
69
We're living in a time of instant entertainment.
70
We can watch any movie or TV show,
71
read any book, or play any video game we want with the click of a button.
72
And as a result, many of these things have become individual activities for many people, myself included.
73
Honestly, I can't remember the last time I went to the movies.
74
Maybe 2021?
75
I don't know.
76
By the way, when Americans say the movies, this is a casual way to say a movie theater.
77
So you go to the movies.
78
Plus, the price of snacks at the movies is ridiculous.
79
So because of technology and infrastructure,
80
people are less likely to visit third spaces to socialize, and they're more likely to stay at home.
81
The question is, how does this affect us?
82
I think this definitely affects both our physical and mental health.
83
Our lifestyles have become very sedentary.
84
A sedentary lifestyle means you spend a lot of time sitting down and not moving enough.
85
So I used to teach English in person at a local college, but now I work from home full time.
86
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love my job.
87
This is my dream job.
88
But I spend a lot of time sitting down in front of the computer, which is really bad for my health.
89
Sometimes when I start working, it's really difficult to stop.
90
I have to make a conscious effort to take a break, stand up, drink some water,
91
call my parents, you know, basic things.
92
Mom and dad, if you're watching this, I promise I'll call you later.
93
Also, for some people who always stay at home,
94
the internet is the only way to socialize or communicate with others.
95
And sure, there are many great communities online, like here on my channel,
96
but the quality of most online interactions is never the same as in-person connections.
97
Okay, I'll teach you some slang.
98
Has anyone ever ghosted you online?
99
Ghosting is when someone you've been communicating with online suddenly stops talking to you with no explanation.
100
They completely disappear like a ghost.
101
It's probably much easier to ghost someone online than to ghost someone in person, right?
102
So all of this affects us, both as individuals and as a community.
103
Public places like libraries and parks are also places where people meet for special events or to discuss local issues.
104
These places are usually funded by the government, so they receive money from the government to operate.
105
And if we stop using these places,
106
they lose financial support and then they have to shut down,
107
then people have fewer opportunities to participate in the community.
108
This becomes really dangerous because if people stop participating,
109
then people don't feel connected to their community, and ultimately, they stop caring about their community.
110
Okay, so what's the solution to all of this?
111
What can we do?
112
Well, I don't know.
113
I'm not an expert.
114
But I think one small thing we can do is to support our local businesses
115
and try to spend a little more time there.
116
In fact, after I read this article,
117
I decided to go to my local library and I spent a few hours there working and writing this video.
118
So you can say thank you to the library for this lesson.
119
Communities around the U.S are finding creative ways to reclaim third spaces.
120
One of my favorite examples of this is the idea of a community garden.
121
This builds a sense of community and you also get all of this delicious healthy food.
122
It's a win-win situation for everyone.
123
Okay, now I have a homework question for you
124
and I want you to try to use some of today's vocabulary words in your answer.
125
Where is your third space and why?
126
Or if you don't have a third space, where would you like your third space to be?
127
Leave a comment below.
128
I would love to hear about your third space.
129
And if you want more podcast-style lessons like this, please let me know.
130
Thank you so much for watching.
