1
When you think about decluttering, whose name comes to mind first?
2
For me, it's Marie Kondo.
3
I first read her book years ago, and I remember reading that she loved organizing even as a child.
4
So I assumed that her KonMari decluttering method worked for people just like her.
5
Someone who is naturally organized and genuinely loves cleaning up.
6
I don't quite fit that description.
7
I actually thrive in a bit of chaos, and I got interested in minimalism because I needed to make that chaos a little bit smaller.
8
I convinced myself that the Kalmari Method would never work for someone like me.
9
But recently at the bookstore, I saw her new book and it was calling my name.
10
So I decided to give it a go with an open mind.
11
And after all of these years, I realized I may have missed her whole entire point.
12
The Kalmari Method was never about the folding technique or even having less.
13
It was always about joy.
14
Creating a life filled with things, routines, relationships, and experiences that spark joy.
15
And it made me wonder, what would my life look like if I let joy guide the choices that I make?
16
What brings you joy?
17
If somebody asked you this, you might have to take a second to actually think about it.
18
But as children, we knew this feeling so well.
19
And I think the ability to feel joy didn't just go away one day.
20
It just got buried under all the responsibilities and complexities of being adults.
21
We're taught to make decisions based on what's practical, what's logical, or what's efficient.
22
over time, this makes us stop paying attention to what makes us feel alive.
23
That's also how I approach minimalism.
24
I feel like I was being very practical, so I did a process of elimination to get rid of all the things that I didn't need.
25
And to be fair, my life was such a mess that it did help me to simplify my life.
26
But I feel like the KonMari method really takes it one step further.
27
Instead of just thinking practically about what we don't need, the Kamari Method asks us what we actually want.
28
And that shift makes all the difference.
29
It really forces us to get out of our own heads and connect with our intuition again.
30
So what's left isn't just by default.
31
It is because we chose it.
32
So I should probably explain what the KonMari method is.
33
It's basically a decluttering method by Marie Kondo where you hold each item and pay attention to how it makes you feel.
34
If it sparks joy, you keep it.
35
And if it doesn't, you thank it for the role that I played in your life and let it go.
36
And the purpose of all of this is to really rediscover who you are in the season of life, pay attention to what makes you happy,
37
and to actively participate in creating the life that you want.
38
And to be completely honest, I feel like this never resonated with me before.
39
And I think it's because the majority of my life, I was really living in flight or flight mode.
40
If somebody came up to me and asked me, what sparks joy?
41
I would have probably just stared at them.
42
But the more that I took control of my own narrative and I began to feel safe.
43
It really came with the belief that, oh, of course I deserve joy.
44
And it's not just me, but everybody does.
45
So maybe this belief is where the Kalamari method really begins.
46
Before we can choose the things that bring us joy, we have to believe that deep down, we deserve it.
47
I love that she uses the term sparks joy because I feel like that's exactly how I feel joy.
48
It feels so vibrant and colorful and it feels alive.
49
But I just want to say that joy can come in many different forms.
50
Sometimes it's excitement, other times it's peace, comfort, relief.
51
And if you're still not sure, try to remember a moment in your life where you felt deeply joyful.
52
You can close your eyes and notice where you feel it in your body.
53
Is it warm, expansive, heavy, or light?
54
We need to recognize these physical sensations
55
and use them as a guide to know what we want to keep in our lives.
56
I feel like when we're connecting with what brings us joy, we're really connecting with the truest parts of ourselves,
57
who we were before we learned what's acceptable and what's not.
58
Imagine waking up every day being surrounded by the things that only bring you joy.
59
Books that fuel your spirit, clothes that make you feel confident, soaps that smell divine, and dishes that you can't wait to put food on.
60
So Marie Kondo encourages us to go through things by category than by room.
61
And it might be a little bit time-consuming, but try on the clothes, flip through the pages, shuffle through the papers and the greeting cards,
62
maybe even hold up the sentimental item to your chest.
63
And for practical things like broom, measuring tape, or can opener, They help us to take care of our homes and the way
64
that it supports our lives can be a source of joy as well.
65
So for practical things, maybe the better question is to ask, does this item support the life I want to live?
66
In our routines, joy can feel like peace and presence.
67
Our habits shape our identity and if we want to be more peaceful and present, our habits have to align with that identity as well.
68
Think about the things that you do automatically every single day.
69
Which part of your routine do you genuinely look forward to?
70
Which moments make you feel grounded and help you feel more like yourself?
71
Highly recommend making a list of all the things
72
that you love to do in your routine and then make it easier to choose.
73
So maybe you want to leave your journal by the nightstand or your yoga mat where you'll see it.
74
You want to place a book on your pillow instead of your phone.
75
Also, what habits do you think would bring more joy into your routine?
76
Replace one current habit that you want to stop doing with a habit associated with your new identity.
77
For commitments, I think joy looks like meaning or alignment.
78
Take a look at your calendar.
79
What events or obligations are taking up your time?
80
So many of us say yes or overbook ourselves because we don't want to disappoint anyone.
81
And even though the intentions are good, then we are not living in alignment with ourselves.
82
I just want to acknowledge that some commitments won't directly spark joy.
83
Like if you are taking care of an elderly parent
84
or you have to go to a dentist appointment or maybe you're there for a during a hard season of their life.
85
But these commitments are part of caring for ourselves and the people that we love.
86
And even responsibility can be meaningful if it's something that we value.
87
So go through each commitment until the end of the month and ask yourself, does this leave me feeling more alive or depleted?
88
What am I saying no to every time I say yes to this?
89
And only put on the calendar the things that truly align with your current life.
90
As a former people pleaser, I like to remind myself that when I say no to others, I'm actually saying yes to myself.
91
And instead of letting my thoughts run wild and think about other people not liking me because I said no,
92
I'm thinking about how good I feel by saying yes to me.
93
In our relationships, I feel like even the people that we love the most will challenge us or disappoint us.
94
So the phrase, do they spark joy, doesn't really apply to them all the time.
95
So I like to see my relationships as a circle.
96
There's the inner circle and the wider circle.
97
For my inner circle, like family or close friends, I feel like joy feels like safety.
98
Am I safe to be myself around them?
99
And for my wider circle, I feel like joy feels like expansion.
100
After I interact with them or have a conversation, do what I feel expanded.
101
If you are not sure, I highly recommend going through your contacts in your phone and saying their name out loud and ask yourself, can I be myself around this person?
102
Does it feel forced or does it feel effortless?
103
Do I feel expanded after our interaction?
104
Does this relationship add something meaningful to both of our lives?
105
Minimalism was never really about having empty shelves.
106
It was always about creating more room for the life that you want to live.
107
And I hope that moving forward, your life doesn't become simpler because you're tracking every little expense and being so careful that you're afraid to live,
108
but because you know that you deserve nothing but joy and you become selective about what you bring into your life.
109
Now you can do this for all the other areas of your life.
110
Take out a piece of paper and ask yourself, where do I need more joy in my life?
111
And whatever that looks like for you, I hope you choose it unapologetically, knowing that choosing joy is choosing yourself.
112
And if all of this feels impossible right now, that's okay.
113
Just make one small decision today to bring you just a little joy.
114
Then do it again tomorrow, until you realize that your joy was always there, waiting to be chosen, waiting to guide you home.
