1
I hope you are having a fantastic today, and I'm really happy that you have joined me.
2
This video is all about turning trials into triumph.
3
And as you consistently handcraft phenomenal days,
4
this is a skill I really want you to develop and then master.
5
And so I'm going to offer you some mentoring on turning adversity into opportunity.
6
That might mean something as as someone cuts you off in traffic
7
or someone is not polite to you in a coffee shop, you turn that into an opportunity to grow and develop empathy
8
and understanding of another human being so that you don't ruin your day.
9
Or you might be going through a really tragic time
10
and I want to offer you some ideas on how you can turn that around or navigate it.
11
The first thing I will say to you is the very nature of living a soaring life
12
and living a real human life means you will get knocked down.
13
Our culture says to us if you experience pain you've done something wrong and that could be true.
14
You could have made a mistake.
15
Maybe it's a relationship mistake.
16
Yet if you are going to get in the game of life you're going to be knocked around a lot.
17
And often failure is the price of success.
18
And pain happens because you reached for your mountaintop.
19
And as you take more risks, and as you get in the game more, and as you show more bravery, you will suffer more.
20
If you look at the great history makers of humanity, the Mother Traces, the Nelson Mandelas, the Martin Luther King Juniors,
21
the Rosa Parkses, these people suffered more than most people because they were such great dreamers.
22
If you live a small life watching television in a subdivision without taking any risks whatsoever, sure you're never gonna feel a lot of pain,
23
but you're not really going to ever live.
24
It's that old idea, a ship that stays in the safe harbor
25
all day long never gets banged around very much but that's not what ships were made for
26
another thing i'll share with you is i have faced a
27
lot of pain in my life i've been at the top of the mountain
28
and i've been in the valleys of darkness
29
and i will share with you
30
that i've grown the most through my difficult experiences sometimes people
31
ask me in media interviews do you have any regrets
32
and i always say absolutely not everything that's happened to me was grist for the middle
33
and fodder for my growth everything that happened to me the amazing experiences
34
and the most tragic experiences were a necessary part of my evolution as a human being
35
and i would not trade them for anything and
36
so i wear my scars with joy and respect as badges of honor
37
of a human being who is flawed trying to do his best
38
and i think you should as well and
39
if you're going through a painful time right now trust
40
that everything is happening for the best and this too shall pass
41
and here's a really counterintuitive idea stay in the difficult experience as much as possible
42
because here's the big idea from this module pain is purification pain is purification
43
We burn off the dross that covers our gold in the difficult moments.
44
It is in the difficult times of our life
45
or a difficult day that you are being asked to learn empathy and understanding and forgiveness.
46
It is the trials that teach you how strong you are.
47
It is the adversity and the troubles that make us great
48
if we choose not to be a victim
49
but say hmm I'm going through a trouble how can I use this to develop forgiveness
50
or understanding about that person who hurt me
51
or I'm going through a difficult day or a difficult month
52
or a difficult year how can I rather than complaining about about it and becoming bitter, how can I use it to open my heart
53
and to become stronger and to get to know my gifts and my talents?
54
I was once on an airplane flying to Paris, and I was next to an artist.
55
And he told me, he said, I pick relationship partners who break my heart.
56
And I said, why?
57
And he said, because when my heart is broken, I do my best work.
58
And it is when we are suffering that we actually can become more creative.
59
Suffering teaches you to become more real.
60
When I have gone through the most difficult experiences of my life, I've always turned to a book by the great Lebanese poet Khalil Gibran,
61
and it's called The Prophet.
62
And there's a particular chapter on pain that I read in those dark times of my life.
63
I want to read it to you.
64
And a woman spoke, saying, tell us of pain.
65
And he said, your pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding.
66
Even as the stone of the fruit must break, that its heart may stand in the sun, so must you know pain.
67
And could you keep your heart in wonder at the daily miracles of your life?
68
Your pain would not seem less wondrous than your joy.
69
And you would accept the seasons of your heart, even as you have always accepted the seasons that pass over your fields.
70
I want to go off script for a second.
71
A great life is a series of seasons.
72
You have your painful times, you have your happy times.
73
You have your times where you are frustrated, you have your times where you're full of energy and inspiration.
74
That's called human.
75
There's nothing wrong with those emotions of pain and guilt and sorrow.
76
That's a necessary part to living a colorful, real, beautiful, majestic life.
77
And then Khalil Gibran continues, and you would watch with serenity through the winters of your grief.
78
I just have to read that again because it's so beautiful.
79
And you would watch with serenity through the winters of your grief.
80
Much of your pain is self-chosen.
81
It is the bitter potion by which the physician within you heals your sick self.
82
Therefore, trust the physician and drink his remedy in silence and tranquility.
83
For his hand, though heavy and hard, is guided by the tender hand of the unseen.
84
And the cup he brings, though it burn your lips,
85
has been fashioned of the clay which the potter has moistened with his own sacred tears.
86
Honor your pain.
87
Trust that what you're going through is for your greatness and stand strong in the winters of your sorrow
88
so that when you get to the season of sunlight, you bring your greatness and your brilliance to a world in need of your gifts and talents.
89
I'll see you in the next session.
90
you

  • “How can I use this to develop…” -
  • “Pain is purification.” -
  • “Trust that everything is happening for the best.” -
