1
There's been so many times in my life where I knew that I should be doing something productive,
2
yet I always chose something more comfortable, like playing video games or shopping online,
3
watching TV, just bullshit that I knew wasn't going to move the needle forward.
4
And I thought that I was actually doing myself a service
5
because I was choosing to do something more fun instead of the work that I knew I wanted to do.
6
And at the end of the day, I would always be disappointed in myself.
7
I would always feel like shit.
8
And I would always feel shame because I knew deep down
9
that I could have made better choices and I could have actually done the thing.
10
I always would make up excuses like, oh, I'm just lazy.
11
It's too hard.
12
I'm tired.
13
And my brain just kind of stopped at that
14
and I convinced myself this is the reason why I don't do those things.
15
And it happened for so many years that I finally had to sit down and say, you know what, I really don't understand why this is happening.
16
I think I do, but I don't because it's just repeating.
17
So what I'm going to do is I'm going to investigate this
18
and I'm going to run experiments
19
and find out the real reason why I can't do the things that I want to do.
20
I started to look into my own mind, how it was thinking.
21
I came to realize that when I was thinking about the things that I knew I should be doing.
22
Doing those things in that moment didn't produce any form of a reward
23
and that's why I never did them because it just seemed pointless.
24
If you start writing that piece it's not going to be finished for a bit
25
and people aren't going to see it and it's not going to be instantly gratifying.
26
If you start doing that workout you're not going to see the results for weeks maybe even a month or two.
27
If you apply for that job you're probably not going to get a response right away.
28
And if you do, then you're going to have to go through an interview.
29
And then you're going to have to go through training.
30
And you're not going to know really with absolute certainty
31
if you landed the job and got the salary until a lot later on.
32
Whereas if I put on a television show, if I make some delicious food, if I buy something online, I'm getting a reward immediately.
33
The switch came when I realized that when I choose to do the work over the instant gratification,
34
I have a better day afterwards and I don't feel like shit later.
35
Once you realize that when you do the thing, what you get is a better day afterwards.
36
You feel better.
37
That's the win that you receive in that moment.
38
And then the other reward, the money, the progress, the recognition, that comes later on.
39
Whereas if you take the instant reward, you might enjoy your show, you might enjoy your food, you might enjoy the game that you're playing,
40
but you're going to feel like shit afterwards
41
because deep down you're going to know that your life isn't moving forward really
42
and time is going by and you're getting older.
43
This is what happened to me
44
so many times in my life until I sat down and really thought about what the hell was going on.
45
If I choose the instant gratification, I always feel like shit later.
46
I'm irritable, I'm frustrated, I'm even more tired, I'm more difficult to be around,
47
and the chatter is louder in my own mind because deep down I knew that I could have made better choices.
48
So the reason why I'm sharing this video is to give you
49
that reframe because once you understand the benefit that you're getting, which is that you feel better, you realize that that's actually the highest payout that you can receive.
50
And as soon as I found out that I was getting something for doing the work,
51
it made it so much easier to make that choice because I actually knew what I was doing for myself.
52
Because what happens when you get the money?
53
What happens when you get the job?
54
What happens when you get the recognition?
55
You feel better.
56
So it's the same result.
57
You just have to realize that that's actually happening and then you can make the better choice.
58
So I hope that this video has helped you reframe your mind
59
and realize what's really blocking you from doing the things that you're doing.
60
And if you enjoyed this tip,
61
follow along and subscribe for more hidden psychology reveals on why we do the things that we do,
62
why we're stuck, and how to make those changes.
