Shadowing Practice: My Mom Went Back To School - Learn English Speaking with Video

Les maken...
1
Hi, my name is Zoe, and my best friend is my mom, Vicky.
2
She was a single mom who had me when she was really young, so people always said we looked more like sisters than mother and daughter.
3
Once, when I was in eighth grade, we went to a parent -teacher meeting at my school, and somehow we both ended up crushing on the same family.
4
I liked this cute boy in my class, and mom liked his dad.
5
Is there anything on my teeth?
6
No, mom, you're good.
7
What about mine?
8
Perfect, just like your mama.
9
Then, during a snack break, Mom suddenly pretended to trip and spill her water all over my crush's dad, Mr. Tucker.
10
He immediately leaned in and helped her up.
11
Oh, thank you.
12
It's so hard to find a gentleman these days.
13
Mr. Tucker smiled politely, and Mom shot me a look like, your turn.
14
So I walked over to my crush, tried to copy her move, and spilled my cup on him.
15
Except I didn't realize I wasn't holding water.
16
I was holding coffee.
17
Very hot coffee.
18
He screamed and started jumping around in pain.
19
Oh my god, I'm so, so sorry.
20
Everyone rushed over to help him, and his dad looked horrified.
21
Mom just shook her head at me like I had failed her personally.
22
Then she leaned in close and whispered, Pass out.
23
What?
24
Pass out so I can tell them you fainted because you couldn't handle causing him this much pain.
25
And just then, she shoved me to the floor.
26
See, Mr. Tucker, my daughter couldn't take the guilt of hurting your son, so she...
27
But Mr. Tucker wasn't listening.
28
He was too busy rushing his son out of the room.
29
And then they both tripped over me.
30
My crush fell on top of his already burned foot and screamed even louder.
31
I shot up from the floor, completely startled.
32
Mr. Tucker, we can still work this out.
33
Mr. Tucker backed away, polite but firm.
34
Please, ma 'am, you and your daughter need to stay away from us.
35
That was basically my life with mom.
36
Every day felt like an adventure.
37
Mom was loud, fearless, and always trying to make me more outgoing, while I was shy enough to apologize when someone else stepped on my foot.
38
Except, our adventure mostly happened in grandma's house, because we lived with her.
39
And grandma never missed a chance to remind mom what a disappointment she was.
40
If you can't get a proper job, then at least make yourself useful and fix what you ruined in high school.
41
It's the only way to save this family.
42
Grandma said things like that all the time, but I never understood what she meant.
43
And whenever I asked mom, she brushed it off.
44
Oh, your grandma is just old.
45
She still believes in bad luck and curses and all that spooky nonsense.
46
She's only 67.
47
Also, what bad luck?
48
67?
49
Like, six, seven?
50
Then one day, Grandma got really sick and had to be rushed to the hospital.
51
Her face looked pale and her hands were shaking.
52
And the doctors kept using serious words.
53
One doctor handed me her medical summary, and at the bottom it said, Your grandma will only get better if you like and subscribe to MSA?
54
Just kidding, guys.
55
I wish it said that, but liking, commenting, and helping this video go viral would definitely make us feel better.
56
Anyway, a few days later, the hospital bills started piling up, and we didn't have enough money to pay for all of it.
57
Mom tried everything, from selling her bags to flirting with the accountant, but nothing worked.
58
Vicky, honey, please, go back to high school and fix this if you want me to survive.
59
Sorry, go back where?
60
Mom, don't.
61
She deserves a normal life.
62
Normal?
63
Vicky, you had a baby at 17.
64
Live in your mother's house and once winked at a judge during your own hearing.
65
He added two extra charges, and I had to sell my gold bracelet to bail you out.
66
What is she talking about, Ma?
67
Fine.
68
Our family is a little different.
69
We came from a line of witches.
70
For a second, nobody spoke.
71
Okay, cool.
72
And I'm guessing Dad is a vampire and my math teacher is a goblin.
73
Mom looked away.
74
Wait, is my math teacher a goblin?
75
No, just ugly.
76
Mom tried to explain, but I was too shocked to understand.
77
Twenty minutes later, I finally decided to listen.
78
According to Grandma, every woman in our family had to face a special ritual at 16 inside her own school hallway.
79
Same age, same time.
80
And because mom missed it, the magic never passed to her.
81
Grandma said it stayed trapped inside her body instead, getting heavier every year until it started making her sick.
82
I looked at mom, and suddenly I noticed how pale she looked.
83
Even the skin under her eyes had a weird pinkish tint.
84
Maybe grandma wasn't being dramatic after all.
85
How do you miss becoming a witch, Ma?
86
By sneaking out to a party with a boy named Brandon, who wore sunglasses indoors.
87
He had sensitive eyes.
88
I stared at Mom, and she just shrugged her shoulders, mumbling, I'm sorry.
89
And just like that, Mom called her shady ex -boyfriend to help.
90
Two days later, Mom had a brand new identity.
91
Her name was Violet now, which was convenient because we could still call her V.
92
According to her fake file, Violet was an orphan who had been raised in a very strict orphanage.
93
And just like that, my mom became a sophomore in my high school, and my life changed forever.
94
I was sitting in class when the principal came in, dragging mom behind him.
95
Who called this sweet little girl a stupid orphan?
96
Is this how we welcome a new student?
97
What in the world now?
98
I'm sure no one said that, Mr. McDonut.
99
She probably just misunderstood.
100
She can sit next to me.
101
Come on, Ma - Mom suddenly shot her head up and squinted at me.
102
Um, are you constipated or something?
103
Wait a second, it's her!
104
Mr. McDonut, she's the bully!
105
My jaw literally dropped.
106
Mr. McDonut shook his head in disappointment.
107
Zoe Butterman, how could you?
108
I never expected this from you.
109
Your mother raised you better.
110
Mom's face immediately lit up.
111
You know what?
112
I forgive her.
113
At the orphanage, they taught us to forgive identity thieves and bullies.
114
Zoe, we're good.
115
What?
116
Mr. McDonut touched his chest emotionally and asked for the class to clap for her.
117
Then she hopped over and sat right next to me.
118
I gave her a look, and she whispered back.
119
I barged into his office without knocking, so I had to make up a story on my feet to make him feel sorry for me.
120
So you threw me under the bus?
121
Did you know he's bald?
122
That's a wig he's wearing.
123
His poor wife has to look at that thing every morning.
124
And just like that, Mom became one of us.
125
She adjusted so fast that she made friends on the very first day.
126
Kids were waving at her in the hallway and even calling her Cool V.
127
But she just couldn't control herself.
128
A week later, when she saw the P .E teacher, she almost started drooling.
129
She winked at him during basketball practice, even though I tried to stop her many times.
130
Then she literally blew him a kiss while throwing the ball at him.
131
Oops, sorry, sir.
132
That was when he finally had enough and reported her to the principal.
133
I went with her for moral support.
134
Big mistake.
135
You know, Mr. McDonut, being raised in an orphanage with no mother figure in my life, I just don't always know how to do the right thing.
136
I'm sorry.
137
Mr. McDonut felt sorry for her immediately and handed her some tissues.
138
Then Mom opened her bag, pulled out a bottle of hair growth serum, and handed it to him.
139
She nodded at him like, I got you.
140
It worked on my cousin.
141
Her name was also Zoe.
142
She used to have only three hairs, and now...
143
She looked at me, then continued.
144
Uh, not bad.
145
Yeah, Mom used it once.
146
Now she has hair in places.
147
Science can't explain.
148
Poor thing.
149
Well, thank you, V.
150
I'll let this slide this time.
151
And for the record, I'm praying this works because let me tell you, these wigs are itchy as heck.
152
Now dismissed.
153
Chop, chop.
154
Mom saluted him and dragged me out.
155
On our way to the schoolyard for break, Mom put her arm around me.
156
You know, Zoe, I noticed you don't have many friends.
157
Maybe because your face isn't very friend -worthy, honey.
158
But I'm going to fix that.
159
I'm going to make you popular, just like me.
160
I had no idea what that even meant.
161
But just then, I saw Miles coming.
162
He was so cute and nerdy looking.
163
Exactly my type.
164
Of course, he had no idea I existed.
165
So when he got closer, I hid behind Mom, who noticed immediately.
166
Please don't tell me that's your crush.
167
I was just starting to have hope for your social life.
168
Just keep walking, Mom.
169
Don't let him notice me.
170
Relax, I'll help you win him over.
171
But just as he reached us, he tripped on something and fell flat on his face.
172
Mom nudged me to help him up, but I froze, so she went over and helped him herself.
173
Wow, you look...
174
Tired and old.
175
This is Zoe.
176
She's awesome.
177
Hi.
178
Hi.
179
So what's your name again?
180
It's Zoe.
181
No, not you.
182
I mean her.
183
Oh my god.
184
Was he seriously trying to hit on mom while ignoring me?
185
Then he pulled out his small notebook and started writing.
186
Sorry, I have this short -term memory issue, so I write down important things before I forget them.
187
So, your name?
188
The girl with the ponytail.
189
And he literally wrote down Mom's name and ignored mine.
190
When he left, Mom turned to me.
191
Don't worry, he's not my type.
192
That's not what I'm worried about.
193
I mean, I had never really tried to make Miles notice me before, but now I had to act fast before he started liking Mom too much.
194
So, a couple of days later, Mom suggested giving me a makeover.
195
And somehow, I became her copy.
196
We literally looked like twins.
197
And everyone started to like me too.
198
We got invited to parties, study groups, and all that.
199
But all I wanted was for Miles to like me.
200
The problem was, every time Mom tried to shut him down, he took it as useful information.
201
I don't like guys with glasses.
202
He wrote that down in his notebook.
203
And the next time I saw him, he wasn't wearing his glasses.
204
I only like blonde guys.
205
The next day, he came to school with his hair dyed blonde.
206
I just don't like your face, all right?
207
Leave me alone, dude.
208
Then she walked away, while Miles whispered to himself, That's strange.
209
I didn't write that down.
210
So I immediately snatched his notebook.
211
Let me write it for you.
212
I wrote it down and shoved the notebook into his chest.
213
By the next week, he was trying to talk to Mom again.
214
Someone wrote in my notebook that you're a witch.
215
It's not my handwriting.
216
People have tried to prank me before, but I know better.
217
Oh, sweet mother of Jesus.
218
After that, Mom had to wear a card around her neck.
219
Whenever Miles came near her, she'd flip it over for him to read.
220
Dear Miles, no. So one day during lunch, while we were sitting with the coolest girls in school, I asked Mom for something.
221
Mom, I have a serious idea.
222
What?
223
You want to become more outgoing and cool like your mama?
224
I said a serious idea, not science fiction.
225
Anyway, once you become a witch, the first thing you owe me is making Miles hate you.
226
Oh, Lord knows I need that spell for many guys.
227
But just then, Ashley came to our table.
228
She was the school's biggest and meanest bully.
229
She had been away for a month visiting her relatives in Sweden, and apparently, peace ended the second she came back.
230
Well, well, well.
231
I leave for one month and suddenly you think you run this place?
232
This is my table.
233
Move.
234
Excuse me?
235
I wasn't talking to you, wannabe.
236
Ugly makeover, by the way.
237
What's wrong, V?
238
Cat got your tongue?
239
But Mom just stared at her without saying a word, which was very weird.
240
Are you deaf or something?
241
I don't usually talk back, but Mom looked so frozen that I felt like I had to say something.
242
No, she just can't remember hearing about you.
243
I guess your reputation wasn't as life -changing as you thought.
244
Ashley scoffed and shoved me.
245
I shoved her back and a few kids quickly stepped in and pulled her away while she kept cursing and threatening us.
246
Mom didn't even try to protect me.
247
I turned to her and gave her a look like, seriously?
248
What?
249
I let you handle it.
250
I'm not getting involved in teen drama.
251
Now let's go to class.
252
But something about that felt very weird because my mom never backed away from drama.
253
Days passed and Grandma's health wasn't getting any better.
254
To make it worse, She didn't remember the exact date Mom had to be ready for the transformation.
255
It's somewhere between December and February.
256
Great.
257
Very specific.
258
And I still hadn't gotten Miles to like me.
259
By the way, he had stopped talking to Mom, but he was still obsessed with his notebook.
260
And even though he had short -term memory issues, he was really smart, especially in chemistry.
261
One day in chemistry class, I was assigned to work with Miles.
262
I tried to act nonchalant, because if he wasn't going to notice me, then I wasn't going to notice him either.
263
You're holding the beaker so steady.
264
It's like you were born for this.
265
Oh, wow.
266
Thank you.
267
Aren't you the sweetest?
268
Then he pulled out his notebook and scribbled something down.
269
What?
270
Did you write that I have magical beaker hands?
271
But when I glanced at his notebook, I saw the letter V written all over the page.
272
Okay, seriously?
273
What do you want from V?
274
Why are you so obsessed with her?
275
Obsessed?
276
Me?
277
No, I just need to tell her something, but she won't listen to me.
278
He looked around, then lowered his voice.
279
Something's wrong with her eyes.
280
Most people wouldn't notice it, but the whites of her eyes aren't fully white.
281
There's this faint silver shade around the edges.
282
At first, I thought it was the lighting, but I saw it three times.
283
He flipped the notebook toward me.
284
It said, silver in eyes, getting stronger, not normal.
285
Tell her.
286
Also, not to be mean, but doesn't she look a little older than 16?
287
Maybe she got held back a couple of years, or three?
288
Poor thing.
289
Yeah, definitely.
290
She's just so dumb.
291
I looked at Mom, and she flashed me a smile, then gestured for me to keep talking to Miles.
292
But her face immediately dropped when Ashley walked up to her.
293
Ashley suddenly shoved the beakers and test tubes off the table, and they shattered so loudly that the whole class froze.
294
Did you tell people that I was a dumb, useless, good -for -nothing witch?
295
Uh, not in that particular order.
296
Ashley gasped, her eyes widening, then grabbed Mom by the collar.
297
That was when I rushed over and pushed her away.
298
What is your problem, dude?
299
Stay out of it, weirdo. Or what?
300
I got so close to her that her foreheads touched, and we were both breathing like angry bulls.
301
Then the teacher came and pulled us apart.
302
While Ashley was still glaring at me like she wanted me dead, I turned around, but Mom wasn't there.
303
I felt overwhelmed, so I went to the bathroom to wash my face.
304
I was standing by the sink, writing my initials and Miles' on the mirror when I heard a faint crying sound.
305
I got closer and tried to open the stall door.
306
Surprisingly, it was unlocked.
307
And even more surprisingly, Mom was sitting there, crying like a little baby.
308
Ma?
309
Nothing.
310
It's just onions.
311
What onions?
312
We're in a school bathroom.
313
Also, you haven't touched a stove since I was five.
314
Ma, are you okay?
315
I just don't know how to stand up to bullies.
316
What?
317
You?
318
You're the strongest, craziest woman I know!
319
Not when I was 16.
320
Back then I was insecure and weak.
321
There were rumors that I came from a family of witches, and I became an easy target.
322
I didn't know how to defend myself.
323
The day I was supposed to transform, I wasn't partying like Grandma thinks.
324
I was here, in a bathroom, crying because a bully had humiliated me.
325
Mom told me that after high school, she and Grandma moved to another town, And her way of dealing with her failure was making jokes,
326
going out with guys, and pretending nothing hurt her.
327
But deep down, she knew she had disappointed Grandma.
328
I didn't know Mom had been holding all that inside.
329
So I walked over and hugged her tight.
330
It's okay, Ma.
331
We can fix this together.
332
Mom suddenly covered her mouth.
333
Oh, honey, did you eat falafel?
334
Mom, I'm literally trying to comfort you.
335
Mom gently pushed my face away.
336
That was beautiful.
337
Now, say it facing the wall.
338
For the next few weeks, Mom and I stuck together.
339
But then I noticed the silver line around the edges of her eyes were getting bigger.
340
So I suggested she wear sunglasses.
341
A few days later, her hair started turning gray too.
342
No matter how many times she dyed it, the gray kept coming back.
343
So she started wearing hats every day.
344
But that will make Ashley pick on me even more.
345
And that was exactly what happened.
346
Ashley had even more minions join her, and they all laughed at Mom.
347
Whenever I defended her, they laughed even harder.
348
Aw, look at that.
349
Zoe Butterman is protecting this loser.
350
Shady V and her body fart.
351
When Ashley walked away, Mom looked completely defeated.
352
I'm gonna hide in the bathroom until I die.
353
But you'll miss your transformation.
354
Then Mom pulled me closer and put her hands on my shoulders.
355
And help me!
356
So, I tried talking to Miles.
357
Maybe he could help with all the chemistry mumbo -jumbo.
358
Hey, so, remember that faint silver line you noticed around V's eyes?
359
Do you know any chemistry magic that could make it disappear?
360
Yeah, sure.
361
Let me just grab this silver eye reversal potion I use every Tuesday.
362
Oh, please hurry.
363
I need it before Tuesday.
364
We both laughed, and then I found myself asking him something.
365
Do you believe in witches?
366
Well, I have no reason not to.
367
Science explains a lot of things, but not everything.
368
I don't know why, but that made me feel closer to him.
369
Most people would have called me crazy, but Miles just accepted it like I'd asked him to believe in Canada.
370
Then Miles offered me some Fanta, and I drank it in one go.
371
I was so thirsty.
372
Congrats, you just drank a love potion.
373
Now you love me.
374
Uh, no. I don't think it's working.
375
By the way, I liked your hair and style before you copied that V -girl.
376
I don't want to be mean, but how do you even remember how I looked?
377
I have short -term memory problems, not blindness.
378
Then he showed me a sketch in his notebook, and it was of me.
379
Please don't think I'm some obsessive weirdo.
380
I just draw things I like.
381
We both laughed again, and somehow we ended up exchanging numbers.
382
Days turned into weeks, and I started getting closer to Miles.
383
I even helped him with his memory.
384
But Mom still needed my help all the time, because I couldn't just stand there and let Ashley and her minions bully her.
385
I'm sorry, honey, I'm ruining your.. best years.
386
Oh, Ma, don't say that.
387
If you think about it, you kind of made my life better.
388
I never had a reason to be strong or defend anyone before, but now look at me, getting into fights and stuff.
389
The Zoe from a few months ago would never believe this.
390
I kept talking, but Ma suddenly noticed someone walking down the hallway.
391
He was a nice -looking man in his 40s,
392
so Ma gently shoved me aside later later hey you are
393
you lost sir yeah actually i'm miles's dad he forgot his notebook
394
and i really need to give it to him oh miles
395
i'll walk miles to help you find miles i do miles yards
396
and feet and eyes and hair with that ashley walked by
397
and snatched mom's hat off while one of her minions yanked off her sunglasses.
398
Mom's eyes were even more silver now, and everyone gasped.
399
Jeez, someone call 911.
400
Are you okay, kid?
401
But the kid started laughing and pointing at Mom while she sank to the floor, hugging her knees with terrified silver eyes and wild gray hair.
402
I couldn't just stand there and watch her like that, so I lunged at Ashley.
403
But she fought back and shoved me against the lockers.
404
Then she pulled the hair stick out of her bun and came at me with it.
405
I was too frozen to move.
406
I just closed my eyes.
407
Then I heard Mom scream.
408
Stay away from her!
409
When I opened my eyes, Ashley had already slashed Mom's arm, but Mom didn't care.
410
She looked like a lioness protecting her cub.
411
She broke the hair stick in half, grabbed Ashley's arm, and twisted it behind her back.
412
You stay away from my baby.
413
Nobody touches my baby.
414
Everyone stared, terrified.
415
Then Mom shoved Ashley away, and Ashley stumbled back with pure fear on her face.
416
Anyone else want to try me?
417
Come on, I'm not scared of you anymore.
418
Come at me if you dare, you useless, brainless bullies!
419
Most of the kids ran.
420
A few teachers tried to calm Mom down, but she was too fired up.
421
She pushed past them and came straight to me, pulling me into the tightest hug.
422
Mom was a petite woman, but in that moment, her hug felt like the biggest, warmest shield in the world.
423
Then, my phone buzzed.
424
It was a message from Grandma.
425
Grandma says she remembers the transformation date.
426
Mom, it was 30 minutes ago.
427
You missed it.
428
Funny.
429
The first time I missed it because I was hiding from a bully.
430
This time I missed it because I finally stood up to one.
431
Come on, baby.
432
Let's go home.
433
When we got home, Grandma was in the kitchen, cooking dinner like nothing had happened.
434
Mom and I froze.
435
What?
436
I was sick, not dead.
437
Stop staring at me like I came back from the grave.
438
I had some complications, but I'm only 72.
439
Mom turned to me, triumphant.
440
I knew it.
441
Told you she wasn't 67.
442
Mom, really?
443
Grandma, you said mom had to become a witch to save you.
444
And look at her.
445
She finally stood up for herself.
446
So yes, I'd say she transformed.
447
Wait, so I'm a witch now?
448
Grandma stared at her for a second, then burst out laughing.
449
A witch?
450
Please.
451
The only thing you ever enchanted was stupid men.
452
So none of it was real?
453
The magic?
454
No. The problem?
455
Very real.
456
After the bullying in high school, your mother never really recovered.
457
That girl humiliated her so badly that Vicky stopped believing she could face anything hard.
458
So she hid behind jokes, flirting, and pretending nothing mattered before anyone could hurt her first.
459
Deep down, she was still that scared 16 -year -old girl hiding in the bathroom.
460
I tried everything to make her face herself, and I was almost out of hope.
461
Then I found those medical test results she never bothered to open.
462
Medical results?
463
Yes.
464
You have a rare pigment condition.
465
That's what caused the silver in your eyes and the gray in your hair.
466
Not magic.
467
Not a curse.
468
Just your body being dramatic, which honestly fits you.
469
So you used it to make us believe she was turning into a witch?
470
I used what I had, and it worked.
471
She went back as that scared 16 -year -old girl, but this time, she didn't run.
472
She faced the thing that broke her and protected her daughter.
473
That's more powerful than any spell.
474
Mom frowned like she wanted to argue, but then she looked at me and I was smiling.
475
And we both immediately started laughing.
476
Well, I guess I should go then.
477
It was a pleasure being your bestie daughter.
478
You'll always be my bestie, Ma.
479
I didn't even know I could be brave until I had to protect you.
480
Okay, off I go.
481
Also, I heard Ashley's dad is rich and newly divorced.
482
Maybe I can become her stepmom.
483
Oh, God.

  • Crushing on: "We both ended up crushing on the same family" – betekent "op iemand verliefd zijn". Handig voor romantische of vriendschappelijke contexten.
  • Shot me a look: "Mom shot me a look like, your turn" – "iemand een blik geven". Gebruikelijk om non-verbale communicatie te beschrijven.
  • Brushed it off: "She brushed it off" – "iets terzijde schuiven". Nuttig voor situaties waar iemand een opmerking negeert.
  • Backed away: "Mr. Tucker backed away" – "achteruitgaan". Handig voor beschrijvingen van lichaamsbewegingen in spanningrijke situaties.
  • Make yourself useful: "At least make yourself useful" – "doe iets nuttigs".
