Shadowing Practice: Practice Shadowing the RIGHT Way! - Learn English Speaking with Video

1
Hello everyone!
2
Welcome or welcome back to my channel.
3
I'm English teacher Claire, a native speaker from the U .S and English teacher.
4
If you are practicing shadowing to sound more fluent in English but you aren't really seeing results,
5
you may be doing it wrong.
6
In this video I'm going to clarify how to shadow the right way,
7
so you don't just mindlessly repeat words, but you actually start to sound more natural,
8
fluent, or like a native speaker when speaking.
9
At the end, you will shadow a short English text with me.
10
So let's get started.
11
English made easy with Claire.
12
First of all, what is shadowing?
13
If you haven't tried it before,
14
shadowing is when you listen to a native speaker and speak at the same time or slightly after,
15
mimicking their tone, rhythm, and pronunciation of the words.
16
Now, when shadowing is done correctly, it will train your brain, your ears, and your mouth all at once.
17
But it only works if you do it right.
18
So let's go over my top five tips to improve fluency through shadowing.
19
So my first tip is to use audio that matches your level or is even slightly easier than your level.
20
You don't just want to parrot sounds without really understanding what you're saying.
21
If it's too hard, you'll burn out fast.
22
So make sure the speaker or the text
23
or the clip from the TV show is at a level
24
that is either easier than your current level
25
or right at your current level so you don't get overwhelmed if it's too difficult.
26
My next tip would be when you're first starting out practicing shadowing is to use a transcript.
27
This helps connect what you see written on the page with what you are saying in English.
28
And it's okay to read along with the text when you are shadowing at the beginning or for the first time.
29
Over time, you can move away from the text and train your ears.
30
So for today's shadowing practice at the end, I have attached a transcript of it in the description of this video.
31
So be sure to click the link.
32
All you have to do is put in your name
33
and email to sign up and get your free transcript from today's lesson.
34
Okay.
35
My third tip, and this is probably the most important one when it comes to shadowing is to focus on the intonation.
36
Don't just copy the words, copy the melody of the speaker's speech.
37
So when the intonation goes up, make sure you go up and when it falls down,
38
you want to follow that trend as well.
39
So we can think of the language kind of having a musical rhythm to it.
40
And so much about sounding natural isn't necessarily about getting rid of any accent you may have.
41
It's about getting the pitch and the stress of both the words and the full sentences correct.
42
So if you focus on the intonation and the stress over anything else,
43
that is going to be your best tool for sounding natural in English.
44
Tip number four, this one might seem a little bit weird, but it is a one of my tips would be to walk while you shadow.
45
Walking helps you focus and it gets the whole body involved.
46
Try it during your next shadowing session.
47
Practice walking as you shadow the speaker and see how that helps.
48
My final tip, tip number five, is to record yourself.
49
Now for some of you, this one might feel a little uncomfortable to record yourself, but trust me.
50
it's really helpful in getting feedback on how you're doing.
51
If you have a recording of yourself saying the text and the original recording of the speaker you shadowed,
52
you can compare how your intonation matches theirs.
53
Now, if you're thinking it would be really great
54
if I could get a native speaker to give me feedback on my shadowing recording instead of just myself,
55
I offer that in my community to my community members.
56
So the link to join my community is also in the description of this video.
57
And that's where you'll find all of my course material, exclusive video lessons.
58
You can access live calls with me every week and also be a part of a community of English learners.

62
Now, if you want to put these tips for shadowing into practice, let's begin with the shadowing practice for today's video.
63
I'm going to read a short story about a Zoom call that has gone wrong,
64
so we will also learn some handy phrases in the work environment while also practicing our intonation and pronunciation of the language.
65
It was Monday morning and our weekly team meeting had just started on Zoom.
66
It was Monday morning, pause after the comma, and our weekly team meeting had just started on Zoom.
67
Intonation goes down at the end of a sentence.
68
I logged in a minute early, but of course, half the team was still connecting.
69
I logged in a minute early.
70
Logged in means to begin the call or put in your details in order to join a website or a call.
71
But of course, half the team was still connecting.
72
The team being the people you work with.
73
Our manager, Lisa, was already speaking.
74
Our manager, Lisa, always pause when you see a comma.
75
So before and after Lisa, I did a small pause.
76
Our manager, Lisa, was already speaking, but her audio kept cutting in and out.
77
But her audio kept cutting in and out and out and out.
78
We drop the ending of and and it allies with the next word when it starts with a vowel.
79
When someone's audio cuts in and out, it means that the audio is not consistent.
80
Sometimes we hear it, sometimes we don't.
81
You're on mute, someone typed in the chat.
82
You're on.
83
You're on.
84
These words also allied together.
85
You're on becomes you're on.
86
You're on mute.
87
Someone typed in the chat.
88
A few awkward seconds later, she came back with, Can everyone hear me now?
89
A few awkward seconds later,
90
awkward means something that's uncomfortable because it's not exactly what people usually expect
91
or how you would want a social interaction to go.
92
If it's awkward, it's just a little uncomfortable.
93
She came back with, to come back with something means to give that response.
94
Can everyone hear me now?
95
Can everyone hear me now?
96
The intonation goes up because it's a question.
97
Can everyone, can everyone, can, can becomes can can everyone hear me now we all
98
nodded though one person's video was frozen on a weird face
99
we all nodded pause at the comma the one person's video was frozen on a weird face.
100
If your video is frozen, it means you stop moving.
101
And if you're making a weird face, that would be a weird face.
102
And another was clearly eating cereal off screen.
103
And another was clearly eating cereal off -screen.
104
Off -screen means we couldn't see them on the video,
105
but clearly they were eating their breakfast at the meeting.
106
Maybe you could hear it or it was obvious to everyone else they were doing this, but you couldn't see them on camera.
107
Then, just as we started discussing the quarterly goals,
108
you'll notice here my intonation each time is floating up a bit because I always have to take pauses after the comma,
109
and I want to indicate that I'm still continuing my sentence.
110
We don't want monotone.
111
Then just as we started discussing the quarterly goals, Alex's microphone started making, it starts not to become understandable.
112
That's why intonation is so important.
113
Then just as we started discussing the quarterly goals,
114
Alex's microphone started making that awful robotic sound.
115
A robotic sound means a sound you might hear from technology,
116
maybe when it's not functioning correctly, or it sounds unnatural, like a robot or like a computer.
117
Lisa tried to be polite.
118
Lisa tried to be polite, but eventually had to say,
119
Alex, I think your connection's a bit unstable.
120
Alex, I think your connection's a bit unstable.
121
If someone has an unstable connection, it means their internet is not very good.
122
Alex dropped out of the call completely.
123
Alex dropped out of the call completely.
124
To drop out of a call online means to lose connection to that call,
125
means to leave the call unexpectedly.
126
Then rejoined with a different background and said.
127
Then rejoined with a different background and said.
128
Again, we want to emphasize or stress the words that are most important in the sentence.
129
Here we're pointing out his background is different.
130
So we can stress that word.
131
Then rejoined with a different background and said.
132
sorry, my cat stepped on the router.
133
Sorry, my cat stepped on the router.
134
A router is that device where you get Wi -Fi.
135
We all laughed and the tension eased a bit.
136
We all laughed and the tension eased a bit.
137
Tension eased a bit, eased a bit, eased a bit.
138
All of those sounds allied together.
139
Eased a, eased a, a bit, a bit.
140
And the T is a stopped T sound.
141
So we often wouldn't speak like eased a bit and emphasize each or pronounce clearly each consonant.
142
But we allied through when there's a vowel between two consonant sounds
143
and we often drop the T at the ends of words in the American accent.
144
And the tension eased a bit.
145
Tension is referring to that awkwardness we had earlier on in the story.
146
So if there's tension in a conversation, maybe it's because of awkwardness.
147
Maybe it's because someone's upset or angry.
148
And if the tension eased, that means the tension went away a little bit.
149
We somehow made it through the whole agenda.
150
We somehow made it through the whole agenda.
151
And as we wrapped up, there's a new idea being introduced.
152
So my intonation goes up.
153
And as we wrapped up, Lisa smiled and said, Lisa smiled and said,
154
All right, I'll follow up with the notes.
155
All right, I'll follow up with the notes.
156
To follow up with something means to contact someone again about something that was previously discussed.
157
So to follow up with a conversation or to follow up with notes on a meeting means to visit them again.
158
All right, I'll follow up with the notes.
159
Assuming the Wi -Fi gods are on my side today.
160
Assuming the Wi -Fi gods are on my side today.
161
To say the Wi -Fi gods are on my side is a kind of amusing
162
or funny way to say that the Wi -Fi is working for me that day.
163
You could use this for different situations as well.
164
Maybe if your shadowing practice is going really well, you could say the shadowing gods are on my side today.
165
Okay, now we're going to read the whole thing without stopping.
166
And this time you will practice shadowing along with me.
167
So of course, that means to say it at the same time as me
168
or just slightly behind me to make sure you are matching my intonation,
169
rhythm, and pronunciation of the words.
170
It was Monday morning and our weekly team meeting had just started on Zoom.
171
I logged in a minute early, but of course half the team was still connecting.
172
Our manager, Lisa, was already speaking, but her audio kept cutting in and out.
173
You're on mute, someone typed in the chat.
174
A few awkward seconds later, she came back with, can everyone hear me now?
175
We all nodded, though one person's video was frozen on a weird face,
176
and another was clearly eating cereal off screen.
177
Then, just as we started discussing the quarterly goals,
178
Alex's microphone started making that awful robotic sound.
179
Lisa tried to be polite but eventually had to say,
180
Alex, I think your connection's a bit unstable.
181
Alex dropped out of the call completely then rejoined with a different background and said,
182
sorry my cat stepped on the router.
183
We all laughed and the tension eased a bit.
184
We somehow made it through the whole agenda
185
and as we wrapped up Lisa smiled
186
and said all right I'll follow up with the notes assuming the wi -fi gods are on my side today.
187
