Let's open your Bible to Matthew 6.
2
While you're looking there, I'd like to just read something from Luke 11 that corresponds with Matthew 6.
3
It says, And it happened that while Jesus was praying in a certain place after he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, Lord, teach us to pray,
4
just as John also taught his disciples.
5
Jesus did a lot of amazing things.
6
He was the most outstanding figure in history.
7
I've just spent about the last three months just looking at Gethsemane.
8
And the only thing I could do when I would come into the office every day was say, He's amazing.
9
He's utterly amazing.
10
He was amazing in everything that He did.
11
He walked upon the water.
12
He calmed seas.
13
He raised the dead.
14
He took on hell without even lifting a finger and defeated it.
15
He was utterly amazing.
16
But what I find amazing here is that his disciples never came to him and asked this, Lord, teach us to preach.
17
Lord, teach us to walk upon the water.
18
Lord, teach us how to cast out demons.
19
I mean, when I want to know something, for example, if I wanted to know how to become strong,
20
I wouldn't go to a 90 pound weakling to find out how to be strong.
21
I would go to a power lifter to find out how to be strong.
22
If I wanted to know how to play basketball, I wouldn't look in the mirror.
23
I'd go talk to Michael Jordan.
24
I would pick out people who excelled in a certain area, and they would be the ones that I would draw my advice from.
25
Well, looking at Jesus, knowing all the great things that He did, I would try to pick out the greatest thing He did, and that would be the thing I would ask Him to teach me.
26
And isn't it amazing that what they asked Him to teach them was how to pray.
27
No one prayed like He prayed.
28
No one.
29
No one prayed as Jesus prayed.
30
Have you ever had someone come up to you and say this, Would you please teach me to pray?
31
Like you pray.
32
Now, let's go look at the prayer in greater extent in Matthew six.
33
He says in verse nine, pray then in this way, our father who is in heaven, hallowed be thy name, your kingdom come,
34
your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
35
Here we see first of all the perfect psyche, the perfect way to approach God in prayer, our Father.
36
It is amazing that a teeming mass of rebels could be so redeemed that they could go before God,
37
before whom the seraphim bow and call him Father.
38
It's absolutely amazing.
39
And so we can go before him secure in his strength and his grace.
40
And yet at the same time, the other side of that is acknowledging that our father is in heaven.
41
I remember a picture that was taken, I believe, back in the 60s or possibly the 50s.
42
Well, when John F.
43
Kennedy was in office.
44
And the picture is taken
45
while he's seated there in his chair in the Oval Office behind his desk
46
and you can see through his desk and there is his little child playing there underneath the opening of the desk.
47
Here's the most powerful man in the world at the time.
48
And yet, because this child is a son, he plays at his feet.
49
So we have both of these things.
50
We have this idea of I go before my father,
51
always remembering that my father is the Lord of heaven and the Lord of earth.
52
And so we have both a peace and a trembling.
53
We have security and trembling.
54
Someone asked me one time, what is it like to pray?
55
Sometimes it's like a very, very peaceful, dark night with all the stars shining as you look out the window.
56
Sometimes it's like a cool breeze blowing through the room.
57
And sometimes it's like kneeling down three feet away from an F5 tornado.
58
That's who he is.
59
And sometimes you need to understand that the closer we draw to this God,
60
the more wonderful and the more dangerous it becomes.
61
Our Father who art in heaven.
62
Now, what is his first petition?
63
Hallowed be thy name.
64
What does that mean?
65
Hallowed be thy name.
66
We could say this separate.
67
Be thy name.
68
That is so powerful.
69
We could say this unique be your name.
70
And it may not sound that great to you, but just think about it for a moment.
71
Most people, when they think about God as being holy, they think God, it means God is sinless.
72
Well, God is sinless, but that's not the primary mean of holiness.
73
I think Burkhoff sets it forth really, really well when he talks about an ethical holiness and he talks about a majestic holiness.
74
The word holy means to cut.
75
And then cutting to be separate, to be unique, to be in a complete category of the other.
76
What does it mean that God is holy?
77
There is no one like God.
78
It's not that He's like us, just bigger.
79
He's not like us at all.
80
All of us in creation fit neatly into a single category.
81
God is not in that category.
82
He's entirely other.
83
And to treat God as holy is to recognize Him to be in a category,
84
a singular category separated from all other things and higher, loftier, and exalted.
85
What does it mean when he says, hallowed be thy name?
86
It was his desire that every creature in heaven and on earth would see God in that other category.
87
That they would esteem God as God esteems Himself.
88
That they would place Him there in their own hearts above absolutely everything else else,
89
no competing loyalties, which is actually what blessed are the pure in heart means.
90
Blessed are those who have no competing loyalties in their heart.
91
Hallowed be thy name.
92
Had a Greek professor who always said you have to look inward and outward in this text.
93
You can't cry out, Hallowed be thy name in all the world, unless first you cry out, Hallowed be your name in me.
94
And this is not just about rule keeping or commandment keeping or dressing like a Puritan
95
or looking like you stepped out of a Pride and Prejudice movie.
96
This is not about looking ancient.
97
It's a matter of the heart.
98
You may be the wildest man.
99
You may be uncontrollable like the sea.
100
You may do better in the woods than in a library.
101
But if you have known Jesus Christ crucified and raised from the dead,
102
if He has entered into your heart, then He becomes the controlling passion.
103
And that is the key to holiness.
104
Because I'll be very honest with you.
105
To some degree, I guess you could say about me, I'm somewhat wild and profane.
106
I don't care about religion.
107
I don't like most of it. But there is Christ.
108
Crucified and raised from the dead.
109
And he is the one who controls the heart.
110
Everything for him because of who he is, because of what he's done, because of what he will do.
111
That controls us.
112
That makes us want him and to seek him and to do his will and to be pleasing to him.
113
To be holy.
114
If you begin with morality.
115
When you talk about holiness, it will always lead to legalism.
116
But when you begin relationally.
117
Who is this God?
118
How holy and beautiful and glorious and worthy is he?
119
How has he so won my heart?
120
I hear in conferences like these all the time, you know, son, give me your heart.
121
When your child's heart has not the father won our hearts.
122
And in winning our hearts, he controls the rest of us.
123
What does it mean to be holy?
124
It is to know more of who God is and what God has done for us in Christ,
125
and that captivates our heart and drives us to love him.
126
And then everything else falls in place.
127
We don't look at how well we dot every I and cross every T, we only look at him.
128
And our rule is love to God and love to men. Do everything.
129
For those two great loves.
130
Now, when Jesus says hallowed be thy name.
131
In heaven, on earth.
132
There's something that I want you to see.
133
This is missional.
134
I don't like to use that terminology, but it's a good term to use here.
135
It should be your passion that in every place on this globe.
136
Men and women and children are separating God in their heart to love him,
137
to serve him and to make him known.
138
At heart cry, I guess our great motto is from Malachi 1 11 that his name be great among the nations.
139
That his name be treated as holy, as distinct among the nations.
140
You know, we talk about.
141
His brother Pollard mentioned the electric cowboy.
142
Someone that just doesn't do ministry anymore, just goes around and preaches in conferences.
143
I think he was talking about me.
144
I had shared that with him.
145
Do you think that getting your name on a website or preaching in a conference means anything to God?
146
It doesn't.
147
This is just a tiny little world here.
148
But there's a great big world outside of the homeschool community, outside of all our doors.
149
And this is a time like no other in the history of the world.
150
The nations are being moved right now.
151
Europe will be changed in the next few months and has been changed in the next few months, more than it was changed by World War II.
152
And you can shake your head and say it's all bad.
153
I look at a glorious opportunity to witness to people, to make the gospel known.
154
What was the heart of our Lord?
155
What drove Him?
156
It was this.
157
He desired that the name of God be great among the nations.
158
He desired that the nations would separate the name of Yahweh and set it in a category far above all other things. And you and I.
159
No one's ever lived in a time like this.
160
I see so many people violating the wisdom of scripture, talking about the good old days.
161
There have never been better days to be alive.
162
Never.
163
With communication, with media, with travel, with the ability, as Dr. Beek, he said, to publish, to make known.
164
It's phenomenal the opportunity that has been given to us.
165
Yet we must work while it is day for night cometh when no man works.
166
I am not a prophet or the son of a prophet, but I would not be surprised if I spend my last days in prison.
167
But until the door is slammed.
168
I must take this great open door that has been given to me and the rest of the church.
169
Look in history, there has never been a time like this.
170
It's not a time.
171
For tight spirits and narrow minds.
172
Greedy hearts.
173
It's a time for broad-shouldered men.
174
It's a time for strong hearts.
175
It's a time for risky men.
176
It's a time to go forth in the name of our Lord
177
and see that his name be made great among the nations.
178
Dear brothers, I.
179
I know a missionary, Brother Pollard knows him too.
180
He's a reformed Baptist missionary in Asia, maybe one of the greatest missionaries alive today.
181
And I don't say that lightly.
182
If he came back here to the United States and people have told him this, why do you not come?
183
If you came back to the United States, you would have such a platform.
184
Your church would be gigantic.
185
You're so godly.
186
You're such a great expositor, your knowledge of the world.
187
And this is what he said.
188
Why would I come back to a nation of what?
189
Two hundred and fifty, three hundred million people when I can work in a nation with one point two billion people.
190
You see, we think somehow that if your name is known here, that then you're on the top of the list.
191
That is absolutely absurd.
192
Someone asked J.I.
193
Packer one time, who's the greatest preacher alive?
194
J.I.
195
Packer said, you don't know him.
196
You don't know him.
197
You don't know him.
198
It's probably some little man preaching to six people in a hut.
199
I'll conclude.
200
There's a girl I know.
201
She went home to be with the Lord.
202
About two months ago.
203
We called her Seti.
204
And I can say where she was now because no one can touch her where she is now.
205
She is in Indonesia.
206
Born to a Muslim family.
207
She came to know the Lord.
208
Her parents imprisoned her.
209
And then they decided to execute her.
210
Her sister, even though she hated her for being converted, couldn't bear with the fact of having her sister killed by her parents, so she left the door open one night.
211
She escaped.
212
Then her mother fell into a coma.
213
And so she actually came back to the family, knowing that she might be killed because she wanted to minister.
214
She wanted to care for her mother.
215
And so they basically enslaved her.
216
And so she stayed there in the room with her mother who was in a coma, and she was only allowed to eat what her mother vomited on the floor.
217
And she lived that way for months.
218
Finally, some believers I know were able to get in there, rescue her, sneak her out.
219
Then she went with another young lady up to a village To preach the gospel there.
220
And why did she go alone with another woman?
221
Why was there a Deborah?
222
Because there weren't any men courageous enough to go into that village.
223
I went to visit her.
224
While she was working in that village, this is a village where you can be raped if you're a woman.
225
You're not a Muslim.
226
And yet when I saw her walk out of her little cement or mud building,
227
she was living in, I noticed that there were some young teenagers.
228
1920 standing there on the sidewalk, and I thought when she walks out, what's going to happen?
229
And when she walked out.
230
They greeted her and sort of bowed their head.
231
And treated her with honor, she walked by.
232
She and the other worker said this, a lot of times when foreigners come here, they lie to people with regard to why they're here.
233
And then sooner or later, the people find out why they're really here to preach the gospel and they hate them.
234
They don't trust them because they're liars.
235
We come into the village and we tell them that we are Christian and they threaten us with our lives.
236
They may beat us, pour urine and garbage on our heads, make our lives miserable.
237
But if we can sustain, if we can continue walking with Christ, eventually we will win their honor by the way we respond.
238
No, no friend, there's no great preachers.
239
Here today.
240
Not compared to that.
241
I could stand here for the next 12 hours and just go down a list.
242
of little men and women who if they ate in your house and they were eating chicken, they just throw the bones on the floor, they wouldn't know any different.
243
Of one preacher who saw a light in a missionary's house, saw a light and said, can I have one of those?
244
And so the missionary gave him a light socket, a light bulb and a cord.
245
Then the missionary went to visit that man a few weeks later and the man said the light won't work.
246
I hung it up just well, there wasn't any electricity in the house.
247
He just thought it would work.
248
I mean, what a primitive little man who is worth more gold in glory than a thousand of me.
249
For his preaching and his stand for the gospel.
250
I want you to realize something.
251
Nothing, we don't live in a time where we can cloister ourselves.
252
We don't live in a time where we should cloister ourselves.
253
We should dwell with God.
254
We should be with him.
255
We should study his word.
256
We should revel in the gospel, but only with this great purpose of taking the gospel in the world, because I want you to know something.
257
No one, no one, not the apostles, not the Puritans, not the reformers.
258
No one has lived in an age like our age.
259
No one.
260
I was just discussing with the brothers here.
261
There's a Muslim country.
262
You wouldn't even believe it.
263
And there is a reformed publisher there who has gotten permission to publish.
264
All the things that are going on are astounding right now.
265
We could use a bunch of really, really strong young men to go over in those refugee camps around the world and preach the gospel.
266
There are doors opening up everywhere.
267
Everywhere.
268
Last thing I'd like to say is this.
269
Please understand my heart, I'm just going to say it straight up.
270
I'll talk to the young men.
271
One of the things.
272
That I think has happened in the homeschool movement.
273
And I homeschool and I promote homeschool.
274
But young men.
275
We've raised up a bunch of boys.
276
Who buy adventure clothing out of a catalog.
277
Dream about swords and dragons and riding horses.
278
Buy toys and read books.
279
But they're soft.
280
Men.
281
You may talk about homeschooling.
282
Your homeschool dad.
283
Are you a homeschool dad or are you just married to a homeschool mom? And have your boys.
284
Let me ask you a question, because in public school, people always say this, why don't send my boys to public school?
285
One of the reasons I don't want them to be raised by women.
286
Yeah, but are your boys being raised by a woman?
287
Are they being raised by a man? Can they do calligraphy?
288
My question is, can they fight?
289
There's a world out there and it's it's ugly and it's bad
290
and it hurts and it's wicked and you've got to be tough as nails.
291
And we need young men who are going to have wounded knees
292
and calluses also on their hands who are not going to play adventure.
293
They don't want adventure.
294
They just want to go somewhere and die for Christ.
295
Men, get more involved in raising your boys.
296
Men, get more involved in making them men.
297
And you're not going to again make them men by dressing them up in an adventure suit.
298
Or just putting boots on their feet.
299
Or putting some silly plastic sword in their hand.
300
Let them be raised around men, act like a man, teach them to be men, teach them to be soldiers,
301
teach them to take this opportunity to go out and do these things that in many ways around the world,
302
women are doing because there are not any men brave enough to do it.
303
This is the time to have the same passion of our Lord.
304
Thank you.
