2

3
so that your meetings can be more productive. And
4
if you stay tuned to the end of this video I'm
5
going to give you my master hacks productivity checklist to boost your productivity.
6
Hi if you're new here welcome for the best career
7
and project management advice subscribe to my channel hit that bell button
8
and a brand new video is going to come to you every wednesday i have facilitated
9
and participated in countless virtual meetings
10
and let me tell you i have seen people make some common mistakes over
11
and over again
12
and what i want to share with you is some virtual
13
meeting etiquette that's going to make your meeting more productive
14
and really just help everybody out on
15
that particular call okay lights camera action this is the stuff
16
we're going to be talking about plus some other cool things
17
so if you're excited like this video
18
and let's get to it lights lighting is everything
19
when it comes to a virtual call it is really important
20
that you have lights on why
21
because my assumption is you have video on you know how important it is for people to see you
22
so if you're sitting in a dark room guess what you're probably going to be dark too
23
so wherever you are with your meeting make sure lights are on better yet make sure you have natural light
24
because i promise you it even makes you look better and
25
if you do have natural light face the window so all
26
that natural light radiates on you i've seen some people actually have their back to the window
27
which means all of
28
that beautiful natural light is now behind them creating a huge
29
shadow that's a big no -no people can't see you
30
so lights are critical particularly with video on have all the lights on and
31
if you can use natural light whenever possible i promise you
32
it makes you look good camera it's all about the angles on your camera
33
so it's really important not only the lighting
34
but take a look at the positioning of your camera have you ever taken a photo of yourself a selfie
35
and the camera and angle was all wrong
36
and was like oh not good maybe even you're looking up
37
your nose same thing with the camera on your computer
38
when you're doing virtual calls
39
so one of the things i recommend highly is get some
40
sort of stand for your computer lift it up you want the camera to be at your eye level
41
so you're directly looking into the camera, in essence looking eye -to -eye to your other people in the meeting.
42
Action!
43
Pass a virtual talking stick.
44
So what do I mean by this when it comes to meeting etiquette, virtual meeting etiquette?
45
Well, you have great lighting, you have great camera angle, now your meeting is going and you have tons of noise behind you, the dog is barking, the doorbell rings.
46
That drowns out when you have someone speaking, they can't hear, the other participants can't hear what other people are saying
47
so there's a couple of things
48
that you can do here number one in meetings mute yourself unless you're talking
49
so you have to remember that really important it just drowns out
50
that background noise and when you do have to talk and
51
if the dog does bark that's okay that's called life
52
and other things you also want to be really respectful for is
53
if you do want to have a point
54
when someone else is talking use a chat function depending on
55
your meeting your virtual meeting software you may even have abilities to raise your hands, things of that nature.
56
So use that functionality in order to make sure
57
that everybody has a turn talking and you can actually hear what other people are saying.
58
Stay present.
59
Okay, this is really important because I've seen this happen so many times.
60
Yes, your mic is muted.
61
I get it.
62
You're not talking, but it doesn't mean you can start doing other work.
63
It doesn't mean that you should be going on your phone
64
and checking out texts because guess what people can see that
65
if you're in a meeting you're there for a reason
66
so stay present if you can hide your phone put it on vibrate don't go to it
67
and check the text
68
because people can see it you do not want to be doing other things
69
while you're in the meeting if you are then the question is why are you there
70
and you should be challenging the meeting facilitator
71
if that's the case other things too is
72
when you're working from home really connect with people in your home let them know
73
that hey I'm working from home perhaps you have a power hour on your door for people not to come
74
if you're lucky enough to have a home office
75
or you just let them know be really really quiet
76
because we have things going on it's all good
77
but just make sure that you're present in the moment
78
and you keep people around you as well so they understand
79
that you need to be present too
80
and not to drag you away keep it professional okay you
81
may be saying to yourself Adriana it's not just obvious I'm
82
in a business meeting of course I'm gonna keep it professional however you will be surprised
83
and I've seen this happen from an etiquette perspective some people just don't I don't know why maybe
84
because they feel like they're at home and they can do whatever they want
85
and particularly with video on now it is really important to keep it even more professional
86
so what are some of the things you can do check out your background
87
if you're gonna have a virtual meeting
88
and video really should be on check out what people are
89
looking at behind you yes I know some of the software
90
has ability for you to actually put different backgrounds behind you
91
but I promise you people move their heads and then they can still see through whatever background you put through.
92
So if you can
93
get a little like a tv table a portable table then
94
and set it up where you're behind something
95
that you feel very comfortable with that's one way another way
96
to keep things professional is take a look at what you're
97
wearing now i'm not saying you get dressed up in a suit i'm not even saying
98
that you fully have to go all out like you are you are in the office
99
or whatever office attire is acceptable for your organization
100
but guess what don't wear your pajamas like particularly in a virtual meeting
101
when your camera is on um just really keep clean and neat
102
and it's all good the purpose is you're in a meeting to get stuff done just really keep it professional
103
no eating most of the time all right i struggle with this one a bit
104
and you may as well and when i think about all the virtual meetings
105
that i've been having as of late i'm back to back to back to back virtual meeting
106
when do i have a time to actually eat
107
so here's a couple of things
108
which is why I say most of the time it can be really tempting
109
when we're on mute
110
and we know people can't hear us to start gobbling up
111
whatever we need to gobble up I get it I get
112
it you know you have to play things by ear however really be wise
113
and smart about it so think about your food choices
114
that you pick
115
if you're gonna be eating on camera now you could also
116
do this let the person know who's facilitating the meeting you
117
know what this is my lunch hour I haven't had lunch
118
yet I want us to have the conversation I want to
119
participate in meeting i'm just going to turn my video off
120
while i'm eating i'm still here
121
and then once you're done you can turn your video on i've seen
122
that done which is a really nice way to compromise particularly
123
when you're back to back to back meetings other things too to consider
124
because i run virtual workshops all the time we're in a
125
big set you know block of time people do need a little bit of energy right
126
so you know i do tell them bring your snacks it's okay
127
so i set it up right away so
128
if you run virtual meetings set it up for people
129
that it's okay to either eat or not eat
130
but you have to play this one by ear
131
which is why i say most of the time no eating
132
but obviously have that cup of coffee sipping on a drink is absolutely okay
133
and you may want to have a smoothie in lieu of some food that's a suggestion now
134
that you know how to have excellent virtual meeting etiquette
135
and i promise you other people around you're going to be very appreciative
136
and you can lead the pack i want to give you
137
something else under this video there's a link for this a
138
master hack productivity tips tricks cool stuff that's just going to even catapult you further in your career
139
so check it out so don't forget to subscribe to this channel like this video
140
and please share it with all the people
141
that you know i would love to hear
142
which tip are you going to start embracing or perhaps you have something
143
that you can add to the list that i've already given i'd love to hear from you in the comments below.
