1
Social science is really the study of society
2
and as social scientists we're trying to understand why society is the way it is, why are there rich people,
3
why there poor people, why have we got inequality, what makes a society flourish?
4
It's a collection of academic disciplines that are orientated to investigating our or experiences of the human world.
5
Social science is the study of people, all the way from their individuals, so their thoughts, feelings and behaviours,
6
to groups in society, to the institutions that govern their behaviour.
7
So government, markets, economies, all these things capture social sciences.
8
It's the science that tries to explore society and understand society.
9
It's kind of a nosy Parker's charter, it's how do we all work?
10
How do we fit together?
11
It encompasses everyday life because you're always interacting with people, so I just think it's a really broad, fascinating thing that kind of everyone will have some kind of innate interest
12
and be able to relate to on a daily basis.
13
Almost all aspects of society fall under the remit of one or other social sciences.
14
Some subjects, if you study them, you're studying really a very narrow set of skills,
15
whereas social science gives you a very broad range of skills which is very attractive to a wide range of employers.
16
The key thing that distinguishes a social science degree is that you get a set of analytical skills.
17
You learn how to approach a problem analytically, you learn some critical thinking skills and these things are marketable.
18
It can take you everywhere you want so you can work for governmental organisations
19
or for private companies or set up your own business.
20
It can take you in a lot of different directions.
21
I'm currently working in market research so that's obviously really related to social science because I'm studying people in a marketing perspective.
22
It really doesn't narrow your range of options
23
and that's one of the very attractive things I think about it
24
because employers from industry to commerce through to charities through to
25
research there are opportunities for you to go into all of those areas.
26
You can do social research for government you can do it for private firms
27
and then you can do kind of any kind of job
28
that just requires good people skills and being able to think analytically
29
and kind of all the things that you get from being a graduate and going to university.
