Shadowing Practice: Acrylic Painting Tutorial - Ocean Sunset (Beginner to Intermediate) - Learn English Speaking with Video

Creating lesson...
1
Bye.
2
Hey, you might notice I'm somewhere a little different.
3
I just moved like two weeks ago, which is why there's been no videos up.
4
Ow, that sun.
5
The sun is so bright.
6
My studio is not cute right now, it's a disaster.
7
But this is our new house.
8
We just moved in and as soon as we got in, The world kind of imploded a little.
9
It's a little different.
10
It's a little unnerving.
11
But I've been seeing a little up spike in my painting tutorial videos.
12
So people have been staying inside and trying to paint a little bit to distract them from everything.
13
So I thought I'd put out a new tutorial video while everyone's kind of stuck in their houses right now.
14
On something that's fairly easy, but like calming and cute.
15
I painted it in my sketchbook a little while ago.
16
Let me just find it.
17
It is not a super crazy difficult painting.
18
Medium beginner, but I think you're gonna be able to do it.
19
It's gonna be acrylics.
20
A sweet calming painting to put up in your house if you're losing your mind a little bit right now, like I am.
21
So let's go to shop.
22
Let's go try it.
23
Okay.
24
Let's get started painting.
25
It looks like I'm pregnant, but there's really just a puppy in there.
26
There she is.
27
We're gonna get started.
28
So let's look at our materials real quick.
29
We've got an array of brushes.
30
We're just gonna choose them as we go along because that's how I like to do things.
31
I like to just choose whatever brush I want in the moment.
32
We've got something to paint on.
33
I'm just gonna use this little plate right here.
34
This is an artist panel by Arteza, Arteza, whatever the hell her name is.
35
We have a little bit of water here.
36
We have a little bit of water here.
37
We have a little bit of water here some paper towels.
38
We're also gonna need our reference photo. Where is it?
39
Where is it?
40
Where is it?
41
There it is.
42
So if you want you can take a screenshot of this right now
43
and look at it while we're painting or you can just follow along with what I'm doing.
44
Whatever you feel like.
45
So the colors I'm gonna be using are titanium white, cyan blue, quinacridone red, yellow medium azo.
46
Just use what you can.
47
Just basically have a red, a yellow, a blue, and a white.
48
and that will get you wherever you need to go for this piece.
49
It's gonna be totally good.
50
So, what we're gonna do is start with creating this gradient.
51
We're gonna work on some acrylic blending and this is pretty tricky.
52
So I want you to be super patient with yourself when you're working on this.
53
So what we're gonna do is we're gonna start with this light blue
54
and then over time we're slowly gonna tweak it and change it into this color.
55
So let's start by mixing that guy up.
56
Get some of that on here.
57
But mostly what we're gonna be using is white.
58
I'm gonna mix up some light blue.
59
Bye.
60
Bye.
61
Bye.
62
So on the color wheel the opposite color from blue is orange
63
and what that means is
64
if I add the color orange to my blue It will mute the color down a little bit.
65
So it's not quite as vibrant just like a tiny tiny little bit I want just the tiniest smidge
66
and this is going to mute it down just like a tiny bit
67
so it's not quite too vibrant and just makes it a little more realistic.
68
It's very subtle.
69
It's very subtle.
70
You might not even notice the difference.
71
Because I'm doing a big painting here, I'm gonna have to use a pretty big brush.
72
I'm gonna get a little bit of water going in here.
73
And I'm gonna start applying this.
74
Actually like real quick actually, I want to just really quickly put my horizon line in here.
75
I just want something to give me an idea of where the water is gonna meet the sky.
76
To create a little bit of a blend, we're gonna add a little more white to our blue, just a little, and we're gonna start.
77
While this is still wet, mixing in our lighter blue color.
78
With the same dirty brush, And we can pull it up a little bit. and drag it across.
79
It's gonna be pretty subtle, but then I'm gonna add more white.
80
Get that going on there like that.
81
Just like that.
82
you .
83
I'm gonna wipe this off real quick.
84
I'm gonna go in with just some pure white there.
85
you I'm blending this out real quick while it's still wet.
86
Just blending that like this.
87
I am going to give my brush a little wash in our water here.
88
And then I'm going to mix up.
89
Let's take this it's kind of a weird green right now
90
It's a little bit of this light blue mixed with a little bit of red
91
and a little bit of yellow a little This is just our little transition color.
92
It looks like puke.
93
Don't do not do not be concerned I know this is a very scary color to be adding, but this is a big part of blending is finding those in between colors There we go.
94
All right, and now we've done that can start moving toward yellow some of that weird green in there.
95
And now we're moving to yellow.
96
And a little bit of that red.
97
Bye.
98
and there we go See what's happening now?
99
Does that make more sense?
100
The puke color is not quite so scary now that we go into this yellow.
101
you Bye.
102
Bye.
103
The trick to blending with acrylics I found is making sure you're moving pretty quickly.
104
And it can be tricky, especially if you're not super used to color mixing.
105
Bye.
106
Bye.
107
Thank you.
108
So I just add a little bit of water to that and now I'm blending this up.
109
you you Now we're going for a much orangey of color, leaning more towards like pinkish.
110
Wow, that is too red, so we're gonna add white to that.
111
Bye.
112
We want a color in the water that kind of reflects a middle part of the sky.
113
It's gonna be partially blue I'm taking some of this blue partially blue partially some of that red.
114
It's gonna be kind of a little bit of a weird Gray like a warm gray color.
115
It might look weird at first.
116
Do not stress, this is just a base color for us.
117
you Say hallelujah, come on, get happy.
118
So we want to make some More yellow and orangey tones.
119
and more red.
120
So it's more like some of these orangey tones.
121
Just in little places.
122
This is just kind of creating a little bit of hotter light reflection texture.
123
If this is dried, that's totally okay if you're just doing this on top.
124
Mine happens to still be a little bit wet.
125
Just a little something right here.
126
Yeah.
127
Just like that.
128
you Kind of mix some of these together, just like that.
129
Streak on some of these.
130
Very subtle, very simple, and it's just for us to have a little something to work on top of.
131
We're gonna add more color on top of this later, but I just want to add a little something to what's going on.
132
here.
133
We want to create Bye.
134
some of these little waves here.
135
Alright, so we're gonna mix up that darker blue.
136
And we're gonna add little bits of yellow.
137
Oh, that's red.
138
I need to go back to preschool currently.
139
Add a little more of that red and a little more of that yellow.
140
Bye.
141
Bye.
142
you Bye.
143
Bye.
144
Bye.
145
I think I'm going to go with a smaller brush, but it's a similar angle.
146
So what we're going to do now is add the shadowed parts of our waves.
147
This is where the light is not really hitting and where the definition of our ways is going to come from.
148
We're gonna start by making these shapes that kind of get thicker and then thin out.
149
and have little peaks on them.
150
And we're gonna connect some together.
151
So I want you to start at the bottom and then work towards this horizon line here, and as you get closer,
152
your waves are going to start to get smaller.
153
I'm going to go to the next one.
154
and make them real nice and thin as we move back just like almost just like little streaks
155
from our horizon here you you I'm going to put a little bit of a bag of water.
156
Bye.
157
I So let's get this color in a very light version.
158
Bye.
159
so we can make some pretty highlights.
160
Tiny little dabs of yellow and tiny little dabs of red.
161
very slowly until I get to a color that I think I like.
162
I'm putting this on in little streaks that aren't Our...
163
dark shadow areas.
164
Bye.
165
Oh you I'm going to add a little more yellow to this and some more white as we transition.
166
further down.
167
Well, that's two yellows and I have a lot more white.
168
I'm gonna take some 'cause I have some left over, and then add white to it.
169
Actually, maybe I'm gonna add a little bit of this too, when you look down a smidge.
170
Bye.
171
Bye.
172
Bye.
173
I'm thinking now that I'm seeing this, I think I wanted to find the darker waves a little bit more.
174
We used red and we used yellow.
175
you Bye.
176
Bye.
177
you Bye.
178
Bye.
179
Bye.
180
Bye.
181
Bye.
182
Bye.
183
you Music I'm kinda like doing this where I start to darken some of my areas,
184
because it creates some like cool layering effects.
185
by having lighter areas
186
underneath my darker areas that makes it like It's just more transitional places and it has a lot of cool detail
187
that was unintentional to the piece, I end up really liking it.
188
Bye.
189
you Thank you.
190
I'm going to go to the next one you Thank you.
191
This painting is cool because you can just streak on whatever colors you feel like.
192
And it makes it a really neat reflective piece.
193
As long as you're pulling in the sky colors into your water, Like, wherever you pull your paintbrush across,
194
Like it just creates some really neat things in your painting.
195
Definitely a painting that is dependent on imperfection.
196
Let it be a little bit messy.
197
Let your streaks go wherever.
198
Let it be a little bit chunky.
199
Let it figure itself out.
200
As soon as you start letting go of some of that perfectionism when you're painting the sky, I think you're really going to enjoy the process and the outcome.
201
We're getting to a good spot here.
202
What I want to do is add a little bit of.. of more highlight down the center here.
203
I'm gonna take our white and I want to do a very light, very light orange.
204
Like it's gonna be mostly white in here.
205
That's better.
206
See now?
207
Yeah, let's do that.
208
And I'm just gonna streak this, and I'm gonna center it.
209
in the middle here.
210
So we're going to start adding our little sun and have little lights reflecting on the water.
211
It's just gonna be so pretty.
212
That's the best part of this painting.
213
We're gonna take a very small brush,
214
something that's nice and itty bitty, so that we have lots of control going on here.
215
I'm gonna do, we're gonna go in with our Pure White, right here, I think.
216
I'm gonna add our little sun.
217
Keeping it kind of centered in our painting.
218
So now I'm going to take Brush.
219
I'm gonna start.
220
tapping on these tiny little reflections from the sun onto our water.
221
We're gonna go Just in the center Kind of do them in clusters.
222
You can even streak a little bit.
223
you Do this at whatever pace you feel comfy at.
224
you You kind of start doing like a couple little random dots in places.
225
Just where you think maybe a little bit of light might hit.
226
Bye.
227
you Bye.
228
Bye.
229
you We apply some paint up here just to make sure it's defined really nicely. And there we go!
230
There's our painting!
231
There's our sparkly water sunset painting.
232
That's a fun one.
233
Wow, the light is not doing it justice here, is it?
234
It's a good stress relief thing, getting my mind off stuff that's going on out there.
235
If you want to see the full tutorial of this painting, it's on my Patreon for my $5 Patreon donors.
236
I've got a little library of full length, real time tutorials on there if you're interested.

240
I just want to create these tutorials in a way that is most effectively teachable.
241
so that you guys are getting the most out of it when you're painting with me.
242
That's what I want.
243
I really want these to be
244
just an accessible place for you to learn how to make something that makes you feel good.
245
And if it didn't turn out great and you are unhappy with this painting, remember that it takes a long time to get to the place that you want to.
246

256

257
Bye.
258
Oh Bye.
259
Bye.

What You'll Learn from This Video

This casual, conversational video is perfect for english speaking practice, helping you master real-world communication skills. You’ll learn to follow spontaneous, unscripted speech—like how the speaker pauses, corrects herself, and shares personal anecdotes. You’ll also practice understanding context clues, as she jumps between topics (moving, painting, her puppy) without formal transitions. Plus, it’s a great way to learn english with youtube by mimicking natural tone and pacing, key for sounding fluent.

Listen For These Sounds

Pay attention to connected speech and reductions that make the dialogue sound natural. For example, “gonna” (instead of “going to”) and “kind of” are shortened, common in everyday talk. Notice how “I’m somewhere a little different” links smoothly, with the “m” in “I’m” blending into “somewhere.” The speaker also uses filler words like “um” and “so,” which are normal in casual conversation—don’t skip these when practicing! These details are crucial for using a shadowing app effectively, as they help you match native rhythm.

Say It Like a Native

To mirror the speaker’s style, focus on stress and intonation. She emphasizes words like “disaster,” “calming,” and “puppy” to convey emotion—copy that emphasis to sound engaging. Her pace is relaxed, with pauses when she searches for her sketchbook or reference photo; don’t rush these pauses—they make your speech sound natural. Use shadow speak techniques: pause the video, repeat her lines immediately, and match her volume and tone. A shadowing site can help you record and compare your version, but even repeating aloud with the video works. Remember, the goal is to sound like a real person, not a robot—embrace the imperfections!

What is the Shadowing Technique?

Shadowing is a science-backed language learning technique originally developed for professional interpreter training and popularized by polyglot Dr. Alexander Arguelles. The method is simple but powerful: you listen to native English audio and immediately repeat it out loud — like a shadow following the speaker with just a 1–2 second delay. Unlike passive listening or grammar drills, shadowing forces your brain and mouth muscles to simultaneously process and reproduce real speech patterns. Research shows it significantly improves pronunciation accuracy, intonation, rhythm, connected speech, listening comprehension, and speaking fluency — making it one of the most effective methods for IELTS Speaking preparation and real-world English communication.
