1
So we're going to talk about some of the vocabulary that you use with bolts.
2
Now a bolt fastens pieces together and
3
because it fastens things it is also known in a group of things that we use called fasteners.
4
A screw is another one for example.
5
This is the head of the bolt and
6
if we take this measurement across the head of the bolt this will give us the size of the spanner
7
or wrench that we need to use for the bolt.
8
So if this measurement across the head is 12 millimeters we need a 12 millimeter spanner or wrench.
9
Now a spanner is British English and wrench is American English.
10
A bolt also has a thread and if we measure the diameter of the thread, this will give us the size of the bolt.
11
So if the diameter measures 8mm, we have a size 8 or a number 8 bolt.
12
The thread on a bolt is cut.
13
Normally, nowadays, the thread is cut using a CNC machine.
14
But for a one-off piece, you also need to use this.
15
And this is a die.
16
And you cut a thread, an external thread, with a die.
17
What you can do with a bolt is you can tighten it.
18
and if you tighten it, you move your spanner in a clockwise direction.
19
You can also loosen a bolt, and if you loosen a bolt,
20
you turn the spanner in an anticlockwise direction or a counterclockwise.
21
Anticlockwise is British English, and counterclockwise is American English.
22
So that's the vocabulary for a bolt.
23
I hope you find it useful.

What is the Shadowing Technique?

Shadowing is a science-backed language learning technique originally developed for professional interpreter training and popularized by polyglot Dr. Alexander Arguelles. The method is simple but powerful: you listen to native English audio and immediately repeat it out loud — like a shadow following the speaker with just a 1–2 second delay. Unlike passive listening or grammar drills, shadowing forces your brain and mouth muscles to simultaneously process and reproduce real speech patterns. Research shows it significantly improves pronunciation accuracy, intonation, rhythm, connected speech, listening comprehension, and speaking fluency — making it one of the most effective methods for IELTS Speaking preparation and real-world English communication.
