1
Hi friends, welcome back to English Every Day, a podcast where I speak in slow,
2
understandable, and easy English so that you can learn English every day.
3
Today, we are talking about how to find happiness, how to be happy in your life.
4
This is a hard question because a lot of people, many people, are not happy.
5
They're not happy nowadays, meaning these days or in the year 2026.
6
A lot of people are not happy.
7
And there are a few reasons.
8
But one reason that I want to talk about today, that I will talk about today, is mindset.
9
which just means how you think.
10
An example of a mindset is being optimistic, which means looking at the good things before the bad things.
11
Or when something happens, you immediately think about the good things.
12
In English, we have an expression, we have a sentence, we have an idiom, we have a saying, which is,
13
I am a glass half full kind of person.
14
So, for example, this is a glass of water.
15
Is it half full or is it half empty?
16
Right?
17
And if you are a glass half full kind of person, that means you're optimistic because you can see,
18
oh, there's a lot of water that I can drink.
19
But if you are a glass half empty kind of person,
20
then you are pessimistic or you're negative because you think, oh, look how much more water there could be.
21
There's so much water missing.
22
right so if you have an optimistic mindset that means
23
that you are positive and the mindset
24
that you need to be happy is to be optimistic
25
and there's actually research on this you know that Scientists looked at this,
26
they researched this, they did studies in their labs,
27
and they found that optimistic people live longer than pessimistic people.
28
And this is backed by research this is backed by studies this is backed by universities colleges hospitals
29
that kind of thing they did research and they found that optimistic people live longer
30
and you are also happier when you are optimistic because to you even bad things are good.
31
So for example, you wake up and it's raining outside
32
and there are dark clouds in the air and it's a dark day.
33
You have two ways of thinking about this.
34
You can either think, oh man, it's such a bad day, it's such a rainy day and be unhappy.
35
Or you can think, oh, it's a rainy day.
36
Nice.
37
Or something like that, right?
38
And you don't let it get you down, meaning you don't let it make you unhappy.
39
And so the pessimistic person, the person with a negative mindset will think,
40
well, they will be unhappy, right?
41
But the optimistic person won't be unhappy.
42
So there, the optimistic person is literally happy there.
43
And a few more ways that you can be optimistic in your life is being grateful.
44
It means giving thanks.
45
So giving thanks to your mom or your dad or whoever in your family, calling them up and saying,
46
hey mom, I love you thank you for everything
47
that will make you happier because you will think not about what you don't have
48
but you will think about what you have right the glass half full
49
and when you realize wow look how much water i have suddenly meaning at once you will realize
50
that you should be happy because you have so much you have
51
so many gifts blessings and everything
52
so the secret to living a happy life is being optimistic
53
and in english we say looking at things in a good light or making light of situations,
54
which all just means being optimistic.
55
Okay?
56
I will see you all tomorrow.
57
Peace.

About This Lesson

You're practicing English with "The Secret to Happiness ๐Ÿ˜ | English Every Day ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ (A2-B2)" using the Shadowing technique โ€” a method originally developed for professional interpreter training.

Focus on sounding like the speaker โ€” not just repeating words. With 15โ€“30 minutes of daily practice, you'll build real-world speaking confidence.

What is the Shadowing Technique?

Shadowing is a science-backed language learning technique originally developed for professional interpreter training and popularized by polyglot Dr. Alexander Arguelles. The method is simple but powerful: you listen to native English audio and immediately repeat it out loud โ€” like a shadow following the speaker with just a 1โ€“2 second delay. Unlike passive listening or grammar drills, shadowing forces your brain and mouth muscles to simultaneously process and reproduce real speech patterns. Research shows it significantly improves pronunciation accuracy, intonation, rhythm, connected speech, listening comprehension, and speaking fluency โ€” making it one of the most effective methods for IELTS Speaking preparation and real-world English communication.
