the series where we have totally natural English conversations and we let you listen in.
10
Today I'm joined by my co-host Suzanne.
11
Suzanne, how's it going?
12
Hi, Andrew.
13
It's going well.
14
Just relaxing this evening.
15
Just finished watching a movie on Netflix, a French movie.
16
From France or from Quebec?
17
this movie was French from France Olivier is from France
18
and we try to watch movies with actors that we recognize
19
and we like from France
20
so yeah it was really good we should say Olivier is your boyfriend right yeah
21
and now fiance yes now fiance well we'll talk about
22
that story maybe in an upcoming yes another podcast another episode that's awesome that's big news on your end
23
and actually i also watched a movie on netflix recently just the other day oh
24
and it's called a marriage story marriage story oh so it's kind of connected to fiancés while i was watching
25
this movie, it made me think about an experience that I had about meeting or not necessarily meeting,
26
but seeing one of the stars of this movie.
27
So I thought today we could talk about meeting celebrities or running into celebrities in real life.
28
So that's what will be the topic of today's Chatterbox episode, running into celebrities.
29
That sounds great.
30
Cool.
31
But before we share our celebrity stories,
32
I think we should remind all of our listeners that there's a study guide for this episode that includes a transcript,
33
detailed vocabulary explanations of some of the key vocabulary that we'll use here today.
34
There's also examples and quiz and prompts for speaking or journaling practice.
35
So if you'd like to study along with the study guides, and we highly recommend that you do, just visit our website, qlips.com,
36
and you can download it.
37
All right.
38
So Suzanne, I told you that I watched this movie Marriage Story recently.
39
Yeah.
40
It's getting a lot of buzz these days.
41
I've seen a lot of people talking about it online and also many of my friends have watched it.
42
I was surprised to find out that a lot of my friends have already seen this movie.
43
I think it's getting promoted pretty heavily by Netflix.
44
Like when you log into Netflix, it's the key movie.
45
That's the kind of preview that you see when you log in.
46
So a lot of people are probably just clicking on it right away.
47
Yeah, it's true.
48
It's directed by Noah Baumbach, who's a pretty cool director.
49
And it stars Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver.
50
And my celebrity story is about Adam Driver.
51
Do you know this actor, Suzanne?
52
Yeah, I do.
53
And one of my favorite things that he's done is Star Wars.
54
Yeah, he was in Star Wars and he was also on the HBO TV show Girls.
55
And I think this is where I first saw him was on this TV show Girls.
56
he's kind of an aloof hip young 20s creative guy I
57
think he's kind of stereotyped as this type of actor in
58
a lot of his roles okay not necessarily in Star Wars though
59
so I guess he's got more depth to his acting then than
60
that anyways I met Adam driver one time
61
and I would like to share this story with everyone
62
so actually I was in Canada visiting Canada
63
and I was flying back to Korea this was last year
64
and when I arrived at the airport in Incheon
65
which is the name of the airport here in Seoul okay
66
I came out of the airport into the arrivals section
67
and I was just exiting the airport to catch the bus to go back to my apartment and
68
when I came out of the arrivals door you know where
69
all of the people are kind of waiting for their friends
70
and family members to arrive this section in the airport there was Adam driver he was just standing there
71
and you know when you yeah it was a little bit surprising to me
72
because even though you're at an international airport
73
when you're in South Korea most of the people are Koreans
74
so kind of stand out as a foreigner so he's very tall too
75
and he's got longer hair like he definitely looks different than most Koreans.
76
So I was really shocked that he was just standing right there.
77
And so he noticed that I was kind of staring at him, kind of starstruck.
78
You know, when you see somebody famous like that, you're a little bit starstruck, right?
79
You're like, where do I know you from?
80
Are we friends?
81
Confused and shocked and overwhelmed and excited all at the same time.
82
Exactly.
83
So I was kind of like looking at him and he was like, hey, dude, he said to me,
84
hey, dude because I don't know maybe he gets this often I imagine that's cool
85
and I was he said hey dude yeah he said hey dude
86
and I was like oh hey I didn't want to bother
87
him I'm not I'm not gonna ask him for like an autograph
88
or anything but he was actually trying to leave Korea and he went to the wrong area of the airport.
89
So that's why he was on the arrivals floor instead of the departures.
90
And I found out later that he was in Korea to promote Star Wars when that launched,
91
I guess a year or two ago.
92
I can't exactly remember.
93
Recently though.
94
And it was really cool to see him in real life.
95
And it was also surprising to me that, A, nobody knew who he was.
96
There was no fans around.
97
Even though he's in a big TV show and a big movie like Star Wars, nobody recognized him.
98
And B, he was all alone.
99
I would have thought that he would have had a manager
100
or an assistant or someone to sort of guide him to the right area of the airport.
101
But he was just by himself.
102
So, yeah, maybe he's.
103
That's cool.
104
Maybe he doesn't like the celebrity lifestyle, you know, having somebody help him around doing everything.
105
I'm not sure.
106
Yeah, like a security person, you mean, or something like that.
107
Yeah, because you think of a big movie star would have, you know, a manager or something at least to kind of guide you through a foreign airport.
108
But he seemed to be all on his own, doing it his own way.
109
Yeah.
110
So that's my recent celebrity encounter with Adam Driver. That is really cool.
111
And that's like a really current popular actor.
112
So that's super cool.
113
How about you, Suzanne?
114
Have you ever had a run-in with a celebrity?
115
Yeah, well, I actually went to college with a lot of actors
116
and a bunch of actors that are now famous and are celebrities.
117
So I have some celebrity friends, I guess, that I don't really think of them as celebrities.
118
They're just my friends.
119
But then when I talk about them people are like wait, do you mean the blah blah blah and I'm like Yeah
120
It's just weird cuz it's like my I mean we've known each other since we were like 17 18 years old, right?
121
So it's kind of you know to me It's they're just my friend
122
and I support and love their work and admire their work
123
But I don't have a starstruck feeling because I know them deeply.
124
I know them Intimately right as individuals not just as celebrities.
125
Yes, exactly.
126
I know them first as Friends right
127
so one of my closest friends who I've known for a long time and who is also in
128
Like sci-fi stuff
129
is my friend Zack Zachary Quinto and he is He plays Spock in the new Star Trek movies and stuff.
130
Yeah, that's awesome.
131
Yeah, he's also done a lot of films, and he has that new TV show out.
132
I think it's on AMC.
133
Okay.
134
And it's Nosferatu or something like that.
135
Okay.
136
And he plays like an old man and then a young man, like vampire, something or other.
137
I'm not sure.
138
I have to check it out because I don't actually have AMC.
139
AMC is the name of the TV channel.
140
Network, yes.
141
Yeah.
142
Yes.
143
Okay.
144
Yeah, but he is a great actor and he is really so good at not just acting but producing.
145
And he has a production company as well.
146
So he produces a lot of projects.
147
Wow.
148
Independent projects.
149
Yeah, he's a really popular actor.
150
I'm a little shocked.
151
I didn't know that you guys were buddies.
152
That's awesome.
153
Because he's been in a lot of movies and is really, yeah, quite popular.
154
That's cool.
155
Suzanne, you should get him onto the show to do an interview with Perculips.
156
I need to do an interview with, yeah, I'll ask him.
157
I'll totally ask him.
158
I'll see what he thinks.
159
I actually, we've been talking about having him come visit me in Montreal soon.
160
So maybe, we'll see.
161
We'll see.
162
Yeah.
163
That'd be so cool.
164
That would be cool.
165
He is a really good friend.
166
We've done some acting together as well, like in school and stuff.
167
And I did a voiceover project.
168
Actually, I think it was our second year of our masters, Andrew.
169
He was producing a movie called The Most Violent Year.
170
And I was a character in that movie, but I was a voice.
171
You never see me.
172
I'm just the voice of a dispatch.
173
woman named Kathy who's actually like a throughout a lot of the film
174
but okay you don't ever see me
175
but we can hear your voice yeah it's funny
176
because I like do a lot of voice acting
177
so he was like would you do this like super fast
178
and but I had to do like a Brooklyn accent
179
and yeah it was fun um okay so listeners
180
if you want to hear Suzanne's voice in a movie then
181
you can check out this movie yeah most violent year i actually haven't seen this
182
but i just googled it and it has a 90 rating on rotten tomatoes
183
which means it's pretty good this means a lot of people like the movie
184
so wow yeah i didn't know i'm gonna check this out suzanne now i have a plan for the weekend
185
yeah uh zach is also a great person like he's super super nice
186
so he's done a lot of uh stage work as well um on broadway
187
and when i've gone to see him on broadway i've also been able to go backstage
188
and whenever we exit the stage door people will be like zach zach and they ask him you know,
189
for pictures or autographs.
190
And he's super cool.
191
He's like, hey man, yeah, give me your phone.
192
Let's take a selfie.
193
Like he's super nice.
194
So, you know, it's not easy cause you're giving a lot while you're on stage and then you have to,
195
you know, also, also, you know, kind of be on as they say.
196
Yeah, you can't really be rude to your fans or if you're having a bad day,
197
you still have to be positive and smile and give people your time, even though you might be really tired after performing.
198
I find he does a really good job with still taking care of himself as a person,
199
but still being a really kind and present person to his fans
200
and he also has a really cute dog named skunk okay
201
is it a stinky dog no I don't know why he's named skunk I think he's just black
202
and white okay but he's just so He's so funny, he has like a really funny personality.
203
Okay.
204
Yeah, so I think I would be starstruck if I ever saw Meryl Streep in person.
205
I think I would probably like freak out and like cry maybe
206
or not know what to do if I ever see her.
207
Okay.
208
But for the most part, other than like someone like her, I have seen other actors on the streets in New York.
209
For example, when I was just recently there, I saw a play with Mary Louise Parker.
210
Oh, okay.
211
And she, her theater was right next to the apartment that I was staying at.
212
And on her break, I saw her outside with her sunglasses on, having her water bottle and walking her dog.
213
And I saw her play actually that night.
214
And then I was like watching her leave the theater and I wanted to be like, hey, that was so great.
215
Like, thank you.
216
That was awesome.
217
But I felt dumb.
218
She was with friends.
219
So I didn't bother her, but I didn't feel starstruck.
220
I just felt like I wanted to be like, thank you.
221
That was so good.
222
Like, yes, thank you so much for your performance and your work, you know?
223
But I didn't.
224
Yeah. So whatever.
225
I've had a couple of experiences where I've seen musicians that I really respect.
226
Yeah.
227
But I'm always too afraid to talk to people because I know that I'll have nothing to say.
228
Like we know so much about their lives, celebrity lives, and they've made such a big impact on us.
229
But, you know, they don't know us.
230
We're complete strangers to them.
231
So it's kind of weird.
232
I remember when I was maybe 18
233
or 19 I went to a concert to see the band U2 play
234
or the big internationally famous rock group from Ireland U2
235
and my friends and I were driving by the stadium several hours before the show
236
and the group and the band just happened to be hanging out outside I don't know why they were there,
237
but we saw them and we went over to them to go meet U2.
238
We were all big U2 fans.
239
And then we kind of got too nervous and didn't go and talk to them because I don't know why, but it would have just been a little bit weird to be like,
240
hey, guys, we're big fans.
241
We love your music.
242
Yeah.
243
And at that time, I don't think we had smartphones, so we couldn't really have taken a selfie or anything.
244
This was maybe in the year 2001 or maybe the year 2000, so almost 20 years ago.
245
Oh, my gosh.
246
But it was cool to see them, but I didn't feel the need to introduce myself to them.
247
And I had a similar experience also with the indie musician Kurt Weill.
248
Kurt Weill was actually at one of my band's shows when we played a concert in Montreal.
249
Oh, wow.
250
I saw him outside of the venue after the show.
251
and i was like hey kerfile i kind of said that to him you know like oh hey and i was
252
hoping that he would be like oh i liked your set
253
or cool show man or something like that yeah he didn't say anything
254
so then i i was like oh he didn't like my band
255
but um he probably just wasn't even paying attention to like
256
who you might have been you know what i mean yeah
257
he doesn't like your band it looked like he had been partying hard
258
that night let's just say that
259
so i don't think he was really paying too much attention to the music
260
but yeah yeah that was another kind of celebrity encounter
261
that i've had not that kurt vile is a huge international star
262
or anything but he's pretty respected in the indie music community in the states
263
and in north america at least oh yeah i think I think, honestly, I have a weird thing.
264
Like, I don't know what to do sometimes.
265
For example, so, like, one time I got to go to see a taping of Saturday Night Live with Zach.
266
Cool.
267
Nice. And, yeah.
268
And then afterwards, we went.
269
Oh, no way.
270
Did you go to the SNL party?
271
No, we didn't go to the party.
272
Okay.
273
But we did go backstage and hang out.
274
Whoa.
275
It was John Krasinski was the guest.
276
No way, from The Office.
277
Yep, and it was super fun.
278
That was really cool and crazy.
279
I was like, what's happening?
280
Because I was like, I love like Maya Rudolph and everybody.
281
I was like going to like freak out.
282
To me, that would be one of the most nerve-wracking situations,
283
hanging out with a bunch of funny celebrities because I would feel like I have to be, you know, if I want to hang out with them,
284
then I would have to be on and be entertaining because they're so funny and entertaining themselves, right?
285
Yep.
286
But that's an awesome experience going behind the scenes backstage at SNL, Saturday Night Live.
287
I was so overwhelmed.
288
Yeah.
289
I was so overwhelmed.
290
I mean, I did not know what to do.
291
Wow.
292
Legendary.
293
That's like a dream.
294
Yeah, my friend Lynn is also Pretty famous actress, but she's cool because she stays kind of under the radar,
295
but she is
296
Doing great acting great work fun fact she was or is in the Series like the unabomber and she plays the linguist
297
Who like discovers the unabomber anyway?
298
yeah cool I didn't know there was a Unabomber series out there totally Google
299
that I think it's on I think it was on Netflix cool I'll check it out I love
300
that Unabomber story it's even though it's very dark
301
and sad real-life event it's interesting history it's really cool how you can actually find a criminal through the language
302
that they use right the kinds of words that they use more often than others.
303
Well, and the Unabomber was a very unique individual, I guess we could say.
304
Right.
305
Yes.
306
Yes.
307
Very educated and had a unique writing style.
308
Yeah.
309
Well, she was doing a movie or a play with Ethan Hawke.
310
A-lister.
311
It was the Oscar party.
312
Yeah, it was an Oscar party like maybe about eight years ago in New York.
313
And we went to an Oscar party at his house.
314
Okay, his apartment in New York.
315
And I get there and there he is.
316
And he shakes my hand and he's like, hey, I'm Ethan, what's your name?
317
And I'm like, Sue.
318
And I'm like, yeah, I know who you are.
319
You don't have to introduce yourself.
320
But I mean, that's what you do.
321
So even celebrities use the common introduction in English of like, hey, I'm Andrew, how are you?
322
What's your name?
323
Right, right.
324
Like that's a normal introduction for everyone.
325
Right.
326
But when you're a well-known celebrity, it's kind of funny because you're like yeah hello everybody knows you right
327
but it's just common sense you that's how you would introduce yourself
328
so he was so nice I mean I can't even begin to say
329
that hospitality was just really really really kind he was he had lots of food he was making sure
330
that we all had drinks and food and we're comfortable
331
and Wow like had pillows on the ground and blankets
332
and awesome like just so kind really sue your celebrity stories are
333
so much better than mine oh my gosh no no no no it's just
334
that I was I was in
335
that world all the time in New York City for example
336
and so I was always around and when you're in
337
that world at a certain caliber you know it's a small world you know you can go to one party
338
and you're like oh my gosh there's all those people are famous
339
because it's not a major big world it's pretty small kind
340
of have a similar experience with the music community in Canada you're either friends with
341
or friends of a friend with almost everybody in the music scene once you get to a certain level
342
so even some people
343
that would be considered celebrities aren't really celebrities to you they're just kind of your friends
344
or your friends friends they're acquaintances and it kind of destroys
345
that barrier between celebrity and non-celebrity and i'm sure
346
that the acting world
347
and hollywood is kind of the same way right at the
348
end of the day it is a very small club
349
and once you're inside the club then you're kind of equal
350
with everyone to an extent yeah i mean i think what's
351
so interesting is like for example at like the ethan hawk
352
hangout like at his place he didn't act like he was a celebrity
353
and i wasn't he was like i'm a human
354
and you're a new possible friend and you're friends with my friend
355
so you're awesome too there's no like level you know right one of my friends was dating keanu reeves whoa
356
and he yeah right and he i was doing a play off broadway at the time
357
and he after my performance they we all went out to dinner
358
and he was like sitting with me for like an hour whoa he was asking me all about my process
359
and like what I did to prepare and my character
360
and like process meaning your acting process right my acting yeah acting process
361
and I was just like kind of in awe like why are you asking me this
362
because you're the famous actor like me I'm just like random
363
girl doing a play off broadway like it's not as big of a deal as you
364
but it's like we're all artists right you know like he didn't see it as better
365
or worse or more famous or not he was just interested in the art
366
and in the craft and that's so cool you know
367
when you realize we're all just doing the best we can to be artists and work on a craft.
368
And so brainstorming and sharing ideas and processes is such a great opportunity and such a privilege.
369
So yeah, that was a crazy dinner.
370
I remember being like, what?
371
I think I'd be pretty starstruck in that situation,
372
But that's really cool that you've had all of these experiences to meet some really high-level actors.
373
That's great.
374
Totally.
375
Yeah, he was also extremely kind, I have to say.
376
I've never met a really – I've only met really nice celebrities.
377
Not a lot, but the only ones that I've met have been very kind and generous.
378
He is famous for being nice, right?
379
He's like a famous Hollywood nice guy.
380
People say that about Keanu Reeves all the time, that he's just a really down to earth,
381
normal guy that just happens to be a huge movie star at the same time.
382
Absolutely.
383
Yeah, you're absolutely right.
384
I have heard that.
385
Sue, I think we'll wrap it up here.
386
This was a really, really fun episode to get to listen to your stories man
387
