Did you know the invention of glass sparked a revolution in ceramics thousands of years after pottery first began?

Early ceramics were decorated with minerals, plant extracts, and slip, a colored liquid clay applied to leather hard clay.

Before glazes, artisans would shine up their ceramics using smooth objects like bones or stones for burnishing.

Then around 1500 BCE, glass was invented and with it came the amazing breakthrough of ceramic glazes.

These glazes provided a shiny fused coating that took the beauty and functionality of ceramics to a whole new level.

Before this, people used pine resin to coat their pottery, which would change the flavor of whatever was stored inside.

But glazes sealed the clay, allowing it to hold liquids without altering taste or smell, and created those gorgeous jewel -like surfaces we love today.

In the kiln, glazes and clay undergo dramatic transformations the firing process is crucial,

with specific temperatures and glaze compatibility playing key roles.

Pyrometric cones measure kiln temperature and progress of firing by bending over

so you know when ceramics have been hot enough for long enough.

Cone numbers with a zero are lower temperature, so cone 6 is way hotter than cone 06.

Getting the right temperature is essential to achieve the desired look and prevent your ceramics from melting in the kiln.
