1
I think sometimes we want growth, but we don't want anybody to see the friction that comes with it.
2
Hey darlings, welcome back to another video.
3
It's your girl, Hilary Allison if you're an od thank you
4
so much for being committed to this channel thank you
5
so much for coming back i love you for being here
6
and if you're new here welcome i love to yap
7
and i love to yap about purpose self -acceptance and leadership
8
so stick around you're gonna love it over here today i'm
9
gonna talk about something interesting it's a little story time
10
but also about the lessons that i learned along the way
11
so as you know i'm an mba i'm also a medical student by the way for those who don't know
12
but i have a business called a department if your artistry
13
and i do makeup and part -time
14
and last year i've actually been wanting to enter bridal for a
15
while now i mean i've done a few bridal like pre -wedding photo shoots
16
and stuff but i mean like actual like bridesmaids and bridal
17
that like is for me that have came to my own business
18
and i got an opportunity last year to do a bridesmaid like bridesmaid train bridal train
19
for a wedding guys i lost the opportunity let me tell you
20
that just so basically the person reached out i gave my quotes
21
and a few other things and i needed some information from here
22
and i think even though i've been wanting bridal
23
when it came to me i felt unprepared i felt like i had to have like the whole price packaging
24
and the whole systems and the whole this and the whole
25
that to feel like an expert and i was
26
so wrong you know sometimes growth growth will come with friction growth will absolutely come with friction
27
and we don't want anybody to see that friction it's crazy
28
so i was in that time i was very busy i was having practical
29
so i would come home i was tired
30
and i got delayed a little bit
31
and to be very honest i think i was also scared
32
to put the cost i knew it would take to do what she wanted me to do
33
because it was a travel
34
job and looking back i regret not doing what i needed to do
35
and by the time that i got up to speed i was able to reach out again
36
and do what i needed to do she had booked someone else
37
so i lost the opportunity not because the client even rejected me
38
because when i was reflecting
39
and looking past the emails i realized yo this girl was ready to pay
40
but somehow i didn't see that then i only saw it now
41
so what are some of the lessons i learned you would not know afraid to read from my laptop
42
so here we go so the first lesson that i learned was
43
that as a business owner know your numbers know your numbers i think this year i'm really taking
44
that advice seriously and i'm trying to know my numbers more i believe as a business owner
45
if you know your numbers and
46
when i say you know your numbers i mean really your
47
cost what it takes to do the service the hours everything
48
you're more likely to be able to confidently put your prices
49
if you just pick your prices because of what other people are doing
50
or you think oh this is what i should charge
51
or something like that you might be under shutting yourself
52
or you may not have the confidence even charges
53
because it feels big to you
54
but now this year i took the time to get to know my business financially know the numbers
55
and i've realized that i've now gotten more comfortable
56
if people say no because i'm not ready to go down not
57
because i'm arrogant or anything but i know what that discount
58
or underselling myself actually does to me
59
because i know what is the cost what is the labor what is the profits etc how much must be invested
60
etc so as a business owner you must know your numbers i think the second thing i learned was
61
that sometimes perfectionism can disguise itself as preparation looking back i should have just
62
and probably giving her all the details the way it was
63
instead of trying to say oh i have packages i'll send it to you during the week
64
and then life got in the way right sometimes we try to prepare prepare prepare prepare
65
and the opportunity comes and we are still trying to prepare
66
and that preparation is actually fear
67
that preparation is actually perfectionism it's no preparation anymore it's you trying to avoid failing
68
because you feel out of your depth but guess what growth comes with friction
69
and it's okay growth comes with discomfort you are being stretched like a rubber band it's okay i think
70
that if you can never be happy with being out of your depth
71
or you can not be okay with being out of your depth you will never be able to grow
72
no one grows by being comfortable you will feel the discomfort
73
you will feel like you don't know anything you will feel
74
silly sometimes you feel like jesus like should i know this by now you feel all kinds of things
75
but if you stick to it you will grow and
76
so perfectionism over preparation is sometimes actually fear it is not beneficial how do you know
77
when you keep losing opportunities because you are still prepared then what's your preparation doing
78
so that's the second thing i realized
79
and i think the third thing i realized again for this
80
is for anybody it can be personal can also be your business
81
but the fear of rejection is actually low -key you trying to control people
82
and let me explain so you give your quotes or you say your statement
83
you've said your piece right
84
so why do you want to control the person's reaction do you get what i'm coming
85
so if you're feeling rejection and because of
86
that sometimes you're not able to see what you need to say
87
or or you are you need to set a certain price
88
but you are afraid the person will say no it's actually
89
because you are trying to control the person's reaction looking back
90
what i should have done is say a b c
91
and d with what you've told me of course she didn't give me all the details i needed
92
but with what she told me it's gonna cost exactly this
93
and not be afraid to say it
94
if it's like 200 euros is 200 euros
95
if it's 500 euros is 500 euros you get what i mean
96
so sometimes fear of rejection is low key trying to control a person
97
or control the situation
98
and i get it human beings we want to control what
99
we as much as possible to control any things to get the outcome we want
100
but sometimes you won't get the outcome you want
101
and that's okay sometimes you will sometimes you won't
102
but the best thing is to present the information present the
103
knowledge present the statements present the work present the price
104
and allow that person their autonomy to say yes or no
105
and it also made me realize that rejection people say rejection is projected
106
so i want to tell you
107
that sometimes rejection is not a personal attack it just means
108
that maybe values don't align or timing doesn't align
109
or budgets doesn't align or viewpoints
110
or vision doesn't align it doesn't have to be a personal attack yes rejection hurts absolutely it hurts
111
but self -acceptance means being able to say okay i'm hurt i'm sad about this rejection
112
but knowing that it's not a reflection of your identity
113
and it might not even be a reflection of your work
114
again as a makeup artist sometimes i've just had sometimes as a makeup artist i have just had to accept
115
that my makeup style might not be for everyone
116
and maybe that's why i don't get booked by certain people
117
and it's okay it's okay do you get what i mean rejection just means misalignments it's not a personal attack
118
and from these lessons let me tell you the reason why i was thinking about this is i'm building something new
119
and i'm feeling out of my depth like i'm feeling discomfort
120
i'm feeling like oh my god can i do there's a part of me that's wanting to read
121
that preparation thing that over preparation thing
122
but now this is the fourth thing i'm learning
123
that competence comes from doing
124
that does not mean of course you shouldn't read you don't
125
need to prepare whatever way you need to do you don't need to research
126
because you need to research especially if it's a business market research
127
but let's just talk about general life yes there's some level of preparation for sure
128
but the truth of the matter is no matter how many books you read, no matter how many courses, No matter how much counsel,
129
the competence you are looking for is in your doing.
130
Let me say it again for those at the back.
131
Your competence that you are looking for is in the doing.
132
As you do, you will become more competent.
133
Do you know why?
134
Because as you're doing, it will become more real to you.
135
Some things you read will become more real to you.
136
Things you didn't understand before will become more real to you
137
you're going to ask silly questions sometimes your first marketing plan
138
your first strategy may flop your prices may be rejected at a point you may question decisions
139
but that is how you will grow and that is how your competence will also come out and manifest so so realize
140
that no matter how much you read until you do you
141
haven't begun to grow that's the truth sometimes people watch you learn sometimes people watch you feel
142
and that's okay so the friction
143
that is happening this is it the friction the friction of
144
wanting to be perfect the friction of wanting to over prepare
145
the friction of wanting to control outcomes all those things it's
146
part of growth you are being stretched it is evidence
147
that you are growing
148
so i hope you enjoyed this year obsession that's really all
149
i had to say yes i've learned these things i've reflected
150
and i thought to share them with you too
151
because it's not just applicable to business it's applicable to life
152
and i'll say in summary what i have seen is
153
that the readiness you are looking for is actually a fruit of the friction
154
and friction comes about because growth is knocking at your door
155
so don't be afraid do it scared do it you know
156
do it scared that's the truth do it scared the truth is
157
that the the fear will go down as you're doing it no one
158
really does a lot of things without fear
159
or some people do some people do
160
but there's always some level of uncertainty do you get what i mean
161
but as you're doing it you grow into it
162
because there will be days where you're like it doesn't necessarily
163
even mean you doubt the vision there are just days where
164
you're like charlie this thing i'm doing really you get what i mean it's normal
165
if you feel like that sometimes
166
but it doesn't mean you quit on the vision no you stay on the vision
167
and you continue so do it do it how you are meant to do it okay
168
and know that that competence that readiness is a fruit of
169
that friction you can't escape the friction
170
because friction will always come hand in hand with growth
171
when it's knocking on your door i hope
172
that you learned something i want to encourage you to like

175
All right, we'll take it to time, it's out of time This isn't the end,
176
just a human condition You've got to stop it, it's all And this is only the exposition
