1
Oh no!
2
Whoa!
3
What happened, little kitty?
4
Kitty ate a maggot!
5
Yikes!
6
But don't panic!
7
Now the big question is, what really happens if you accidentally eat a maggot?
8
Zoom in!
9
Imagine biting into a juicy apple.
10
Crunch, sweet.
11
Another bite.
12
Then you notice something pale and wriggling near the core.
13
Your first reaction might be to panic.
14
Maybe you imagine the tiny creature crawling through your stomach.
15
growing into a giant insect and causing a full blown rampage.
16
Fortunately, reality is much less dramatic.
17
That wriggly creature is probably a maggot, the larval stage of a fly.
18
The maggot itself usually isn't poisonous,
19
but its presence is often a sign that the food around it may contain harmful microorganisms.
20
That's because flies can move between garbage, animal waste and other contaminated materials before landing on food,
21
potentially carrying bacteria with them.
22
Two important examples are Salmonella and certain strains of Osterichii coli.
23
If contaminated food or larvae introduce enough of these bacteria into your digestive system,
24
you could develop food poisoning.
25
Some E.coli infections can cause bloody diarrhea and rarely serious complications.
26
So ironically, the bigger problem may not be the maggot you swallowed, but what came along with it.
27
So after discovering your unexpected snack, what should you do?
28
First, don't panic.
29
There is no need to make yourself vomit.
30
Most importantly, don't continue eating the suspicious food.
31
Throw it away, wash your hands and pay attention to how you feel over the next several days.
32
But that doesn't mean the maggot itself is always harmless.
33
In rare cases, fly larvae can survive in the gastrointestinal tract and cause a condition called intestinal myiasis.
34
Some people with this condition experience abdominal symptoms or notice larvae in their stool.
35
Fortunately, such cases are uncommon,
36
and swallowing a single maggot does not mean you automatically have a parasitic infestation.
37
The risk depends on the fly species, what you ate and where you live or have travelled.
38
Still, accidentally, swallowing a few larvae is unlikely to cause lasting harm.
39
Nevertheless, your body deserves attention.
40
Seek medical help if you develop severe or persistent abdominal pain,
41
repeated vomiting, bloody diarrhea, significant dehydration, high fever or other worrying symptoms.
42
People with weakened immune systems, very young children and other adults may need particular caution with food bone illness.
43
And here's the strangest part.
44
Humans actually eat insects intentionally.
45
Researchers are exploring insect larvae as sources of protein and fat.
46
And some cultures have traditional insect foods.
47
But there's a big difference between food grade insects raised and processed under controlled conditions and a random maggot in rotten food.
48
So, please don't try this at home.
49
So, if you accidentally eat a maggot, take a breath.
50
Your stomach isn't suddenly a horror movie.
51
The maggot won't become a fly inside you and one unfortunate bite usually isn't a medical emergency.
52
The bigger lesson is simple.
53
Watch the food, not the maggot.
54
If your food has become a fly nursery, it's time for lunch to meet the trash can.
55
Trivia time!
56
Did you know fly eggs hatch into tiny maggots within 8 to 24 hours of being laid?
57
Also, maggots also release special enzymes that liquefy their food before they consume it.
58
Much like adult flies do.

Today's sketch of the day goes to...
62
Allegra Tharapurl!
63
Hope you learned something strange today!
64
Until next time, it's me, Dr. Binox, Zooming Out!
65
Here we go, Kitty!
66
You'll almost likely be just fine!
67
Aww!
68
And Kitty was already planning to use this as an excuse to skip math class!
69
Mmm, nice try, but never mind.
