6
B1, B2 English Story.
7
A new edition.
8
Michael and Sarah had been together for four years.
9
They met on a night out.
10
Michael spotted Sarah across the bar and went over to talk to her.
11
At first, Sarah wasn't interested in Michael at all.
12
He was drunk and acting the goat.
13
The following week, they saw each other again.
14
This time, Michael wasn't as drunk and they had a coherent conversation.
15
Michael and his friends were good fun and Sarah warmed to him.
16
They saw each other several times at the pub quiz night
17
before Michael plucked up the courage to ask her out on a date.
18
Their first date was a bit of a disaster.
19
They decided to meet at a country pub and have a carvery.
20
The waiter accidentally spilt red wine all over Michael's new white shirt.
21
Then Sarah tripped over someone's bags and hurt her arm.
22
Then her car decided to not start up when they left.
23
Michael tried to fix it and made matters worse.
24
It didn't help that it was chucking it down and gale force winds.
25
Their second date was much calmer.
26
They met for a walk in the local park.
27
They enjoyed a takeaway coffee and a good laugh.
28
From then on, they started to see more of each other until they moved in together 18 months later.
29
Moving in together wasn't easy at first.
30
They both had different routines and ideas of how a house should be run.
31
But now they had worked out how to make things work and they shared chores equally.
32
Sarah was an assistant headteacher and Michael was a publishing assistant.
33
They both loved their jobs and their lifestyle,
34
but they were ready to take the next step and start a family.
35
They had discussed it in depth before deciding this is what they wanted.
36
They knew they'd be tired and stressed and have less money,
37
but they wanted to have a family and create new traditions and routines with their loved one.
38
Sarah's pregnancy was not an easy one.
39
She suffered from severe morning sickness and high blood pressure.
40
She had never had high blood pressure in her life.
41
She was closely monitored by doctors and often felt lethargic and nauseous.
42
This made her job as an assistant head quite difficult.
43
She had to move away from her teaching duties and focus more on the office part of the job.
44
That way, she wasn't moving around as much and was less likely to throw up mid-lesson.
45
As Sarah's belly began to swell bigger and bigger, Michael started to panic.
46
What if he was a terrible dad?
47
What if their child was sick?
48
What if something happened during childbirth?
49
He dreaded seeing Sarah in so much pain He kept all of his concerns to himself
50
and found he had many sleepless nights There wasn't much he could do except be there for Sarah whenever she needed him
51
Sarah finished work two weeks before her due date She wanted
52
to save as much of her parental leave as she could For
53
when the baby was born She would take a full year's
54
parental leave Her work colleagues got them some lovely gifts
55
And some of the children at the school made her cards And brought in little presents they had made
56
She was incredibly touched.
57
In the two-week run-up to the baby's birth,
58
they finished decorating the nursery and got all the bits and bobs they needed.
59
They knew they would never feel fully prepared.
60
Their life was about to change in ways they could never imagine.
61
Sarah's belly was huge.
62
It was uncomfortable and heavy.
63
She was terrified of giving birth,
64
but she was fed up with being pregnant.
65
One night, at around 11.30pm,
66
Michael had just dropped off and Sarah was reading in bed.
67
She started to feel strange.
68
She could feel twinges of pain and knew that something was happening.
69
She didn't want to wake Michael yet,
70
so she decided to walk around the house and try and ease the uncomfortable feeling inside her.
71
She made herself a hot drink.
72
This is it, she said,
73
and she took a deep breath.
74
She started to shake.
75
She was scared.
76
She knew she was about to embark on the most pain she will most probably ever experience.
77
And she was petrified.
78
Two hours passed
79
and the pain started to become unbearable She decided it was
80
time to call the midwife She explained the pain she was experiencing
81
and talked through with the midwife about how often the contractions
82
were happening The midwife advised Sarah to get ready for the hospital and to wake Michael up.
83
She didn't need to rush,
84
but she also shouldn't take her time.
85
Sarah decided to have a quick shower.
86
She felt tired and knew she had a long night ahead of her.
87
She needed to wake up.
88
Then she put on her comfortable clothes and gently woke up Michael.
89
He started to instantly panic and Sarah had to calm him down.
90
Michael took the pre-prepared bags to the car and came back to Sarah.
91
They locked up and made their way to the hospital.
92
The bumpy roads did not help Sarah's pain.
93
The 20-minute journey felt like two hours to her.
94
Once they arrived, the midwives brought her a wheelchair and then led her to her room for the delivery.
95
They gave her an examination and she was already 8 centimetres dilated,
96
only two more to go.
97
Sarah started to take deep breaths on the gas and air
98
and tried to do all the breathing exercises she had been taught.
99
Michael sat next to her,
100
stroking her hand and internally panicking.
101
Hours went by when nothing seemed to happen and then suddenly Sarah shouted,
102
I need to push!
103
The midwives came running in to check her and agreed that it was time.
104
Sarah was as cool as a cucumber,
105
while Michael, who didn't have to do anything,
106
was running around like a headless chicken.
107
Sarah started to lose her patience.
108
If you don't calm down,
109
you're going to have to go.
110
It's not you who's in excruciating pain, so stop it.
111
Michael realised he was being ridiculous and calmed down instantly.
112
After almost two hours of pushing,
113
sweating and crying, their baby boy entered the world and,
114
as he did, Michael promptly fainted.
115
Sarah couldn't help
116
but laugh as they gave her their baby boy to hold
117
She couldn't believe it Her own little boy A new addition to their little family
118
And a new life on the planet She kissed him
119
and handed him back to the midwives So they could check everything was okay By the time Michael came around,
120
Sarah was sitting up in bed, cuddling their little boy.
121
He weighed a whopping nine pounds and three ounces.
122
No wonder her belly was so big.
123
He seemed calm and content in his mother's arms.
124
Michael was so proud of Sarah for going through the birth.
125
He knew he could never do something as arduous.
126
They took a family photo and cooed over their favourite little man.
127
They decided they would call him Oliver Michael.
128
Michael after his dad and Oliver after Sarah's grandad who had recently passed away.
129
If Oliver Michael became half the man her grandad was, she'd be happy.
130
As Sarah dozed off to sleep,
131
exhausted from the birth, Michael cuddled baby Oliver and cried a little.
132
This was it.
133
He was now a daddy and life looked quite different to him.
134
He would try to do everything he could to give Oliver a wonderful,
135
healthy and happy life.
136

  • Present Perfect Continuous: "They had been together for four years."
  • Past Simple: "Michael spotted Sarah across the bar."
  • First Conditional: "What if he was a terrible dad?"

Shadowing?
