6 a .m in Myanmar.
2
How does Yangon start instead?
3
Well, with mohinga and tea.
4
We're diving deep into breakfast locals have been waking up to for generations.
5
From steaming bowls of noodles to decades -old tea shops, this is Burmese breakfast like you've never seen.
6
Good morning from Myanmar.
7
Today we are taking you on a breakfast tour here in Yangon.
8
When I spoke to Burmese people living abroad the thing they told me they miss most about their country
9
and their food was the breakfast we're gonna have the ultimate breakfast tour here in Yangon
10
so for breakfast this morning in Yangon we're having the national dish mohinga
11
you can't come to Myanmar without eating mohinga
12
so it starts with the base of garlic chilies onions cooked
13
down with a fish river fish cart until the meat just falls off the bone
14
and then they actually take the bones pound it into like a powder
15
and then they mix it back into the soup
16
so even the bones are in there they thicken it up with a chickpea powder
17
and then it's served with boiled eggs
18
and noodles rice noodles this massive pot of mohinga is boiling away on charcoal
19
and they are just selling out like by 8 30 every day we're here at 7 30
20
and it is just absolutely packed you can pick all your toppings as you wish
21
and they also have another dish here called ono khao sui
22
which is like a coconut milk base we're gonna try both
23
but just getting in the kitchen getting close
24
and seeing all the action that's one way to start your day here in Yangon.
25
Breakfast in Yangon.
26
This is mohinga and there are so many different types of mohinga.
27
I'm not even going to get into it from all the different regions across the country.
28
But today we've got our bowl which comes with a couple of interesting ingredients.
29
This
30
fried bottled gourd and then the banana stem which is very popular
31
and then we've got a whole onion it looks like there as well.
32
And then I've been told I should dress it up with a little bit of cilantro here,
33
a little bit more, and then some chili as well.
34
And this is gonna be my first taste of mojenga which is such a famous dish here.
35
Squeeze of lemon.
36
Let's give that a little mix.
37
Oh, that's looking super thick.
38
So it's thickened up with that chickpea powder and then just the bones of the fish, everything river fish
39
oh yum like fried bottle gourd in there
40
which gives it a nice crunch
41
and the noodles are super slippery just thin little noodles kind of like hanom jean in Thailand
42
and the flavor is not as like fishy as I thought
43
it's actually quite subtle really thick creamy broth like the noodles are just completely soaked.
44
There's so much going on in there.
45
Let me try this, which is the banana stem or like I guess the trunk of the banana tree.
46
It reminds me of lotus stem.
47
It's like almost nothing.
48
It's just like air and fiber really nice just a little bit of a crunch
49
and I'm eyeing this onion that they put in there whole onion you just take a biter the side of it
50
I thought it was gonna be like really strong seafood flavor
51
which for me 7 in in the morning is not like my cup of tea, but it's actually not.
52
It's really, really nice.
53
Creamy, a little bit sweet, a little bit spicy now.
54
I've added the chilies, and then you can squeeze the lemon as much as you want for the sourness.
55
And that's awesome.
56
This style of mohinga is called meow -meah.
57
I'm not gonna get into it, like I said, because I don't know enough about it to talk about it, but it's a little bit lighter.
58
There's not fish paste in this one, So the seafood flavor is not as strong.
59
I'm just sitting right on the side of the street, watching them cook.
60
They're all cooking over charcoal too.
61
And like I said earlier, they're going to sell out real quick.
62
This is a popular breakfast spot.
63
Mohinga.
64
I love it.
65
It's actually so delicious.
66
Okay, second bowl of noodles.
67
We got the Ono Khao Sui, which they only sell on Saturdays and Sundays.
68
So I guess there's a debate.
69
It's similar to Khao Sui in Thailand, or maybe Khao Sui is similar to Ono Khao Sui in Myanmar.
70
Very similar coconut milk based broth.
71
This one is chicken, so no fish in this one.
72
Some onions, some crackers.
73
They gave us lots of bones.
74
I see the wishbone in there too.
75
And some noodles on the bottom there.
76
I'm going to again throw some cilantro on top here.
77
And this is also thickened up with the chickpea powder as well.
78
Let's see if we can get down to those noodles at the bottom.
79
There we go.
80
Mmm.
81
Mmm.
82
Mmm.
83
Mmm.
84
Mmm.
85
Mmm.
86
Mmm.
87
Mmm.
88
Mmm.
89
Mmm.
90
My gosh, super creamy because like it's already creamy from the coconut milk
91
that they put in there but then they thickened it with the chickpea powder
92
so it's like extra extra thick and it's not as spicy even though it has
93
that red color it's not very spicy and then another key difference here is that the noodles are actually wheat noodles.
94
This one's a lot sweeter than the mohinga really creamy really rich
95
I actually think I prefer the mohinga
96
this one's a little bit heavy for me for breakfast I order my mohinga with a duck egg in it
97
and I'm so excited to try I love it go straight for it
98
it's pretty good really good actually
99
Thank you to Mark and Sandy from Sabah tour for taking us to a really, really good spot.
100
It makes me happy when I see
101
Thai people enjoying the morning gaff.
102
I don't think you're converted on the Onok house.
103
I love it.
104
One thing that makes traveling way easier for me is knowing I'm going to have data as soon as I land.
105
That's why I've been using Olafly, which gives you unlimited data in over 200 destinations around the world.
106
And because it's an eSIM, I don't have to mess around with any physical SIMs.
107
I just install it on my phone.
108
And if you travel a lot like I do, they even have unlimited monthly plans, which work in 160 plus destinations.
109
So instead of buying a new SIM or figuring out a new data plan every time you cross the border,
110
you can basically stay connected wherever you're going.
111
Something else I really like is Olafly's always on feature.
112
You get one gigabyte of backup data after purchasing a short trip or a monthly plan.
113
So for example, I'm traveling in Japan
114
and I'm transiting in another country on the way home and my plan has just run out.
115
Well, I have one gigabyte of backup data, which gives me enough time to renew my plan or grab a new eSIM for my next destination.
116
So for me, it's really just taking the hassle out of traveling
117
and having the peace of mind that I will be connected
118
when I land so I can focus on the things that really matter when you travel, like the food.
119
Use my code to get a discount on your next Olifla eSIM.
120
So we spotted this stall on the side of the street making something they call ijiaqgwe,
121
which is very similar or almost the exact same thing to Chinese yu tiao.
122
So he's got this big thing of dough that he's cut into strips.
123
He takes one of the strips, cuts it in half, and then presses them together with almost like a big chopstick.
124
Then they go stretched right into the oil
125
and then they've got more surface area
126
that way since he's put two of them
127
so they kind of pop up and then fried until golden crispy and then we're gonna dip it in tea.
128
So this is a really creamy malari.
129
Check out this giant cauldron of oil cooking away.
130
Wow, so they take not very much time until they're completely golden crispy.
131
He's got the biggest chopsticks I've ever seen
132
and then once maybe just two minutes in the oil then they're ready to go.
133
So we're going to order some up and then have it with tea.
134
I said it was a stall
135
but really it's just a table right on the street like not even on the side of the street
136
we're like in the middle of the road
137
so we got the ijiaqoe
138
and then right beside them is another stall that's selling bay balata
139
which is almost like roti but it's stuffed with beans
140
and they've actually been here for 20 years in this stall here
141
and we're gonna order both up
142
and have them just across the street over here with some tea crazy
143
that they've been here in this little cart for 20 years selling this it's amazing
144
so at the tea shop that we're going to have all the snacks
145
that we've been gathering they also make naan so they've got this easy tandoor oven that's like
146
on an angle and it's just filled with charcoal
147
so he stretches the dough over this little pillow
148
and then sticks his whole arm in there slaps it on the top of the tandoor oven
149
and then he's just grabbing it out with his bare hand
150
and like the heat coming out of that thing is intense
151
so real old -school looking shop we're gonna sit down now there's our naan with our fried dough
152
and our palata and have it with teeth
153
Okay, we've got our spread of different bread items and then we've just ordered up tea, but this is a special tea they call Ceylon tea,
154
which has this beautiful thick top of milk curds and you're supposed to dip these guys in it.
155
So I'm just going to rip this off and just go for a full submergent.
156
Oh yeah.
157
Oh, the tea's sweet and then this just soaks it up completely.
158
It completely saturates it.
159
Let's see if I can get some of those curds.
160
There we go.
161
Very good.
162
Very rich, creamy.
163
This is like a pillow, like a fried pillow.
164
Okay, next up I'm going to try these beans with the naan and they call it be nanbia.
165
So I'm gonna mix these guys up and then just pour them right in the middle here.
166
And that naan's fresh out of the charcoal oven.
167
Rip some of that off.
168
And then grab some of these.
169
They're sweet actually.
170
I was not expecting that at all.
171
I thought it was gonna be a lot more savory.
172
And it was also the favorite dish of the godfather in Myanmar.
173
Yeah, for John's favorite breakfast dish.
174
You can actually see the little sprouts on these peas here.
175
And yeah, like I said, a lot sweeter than I thought.
176
This is how you really feel like a local in Myanmar.
177
Sitting at the tea shop.
178
This might take a little getting used to to wrap your head around the chunkies in there, the floaties
179
but actually really nice.
180
One more to try.
181
This is the bay balata.
182
So it's been fried with those beans inside.
183
Just simple snacks, mostly fried.
184
And then everything's complemented by the tea.
185
Just sitting watching the city wake up, watching the naan being made, it's pretty amazing.
186
Such a cool experience.
187
This shop is just so old school.
188
Like the signs on the wall look like, I don't know, they've been there for decades.
189
That's about as local as it gets.
190
It feels like stepping back in time in that tea shop. So cool.
191
So we're just strolling through one of the many morning markets here in Yangon
192
and we spotted this lady here who's selling the Banana stem
193
that we had in the mohingya this morning really delicious ingredient really unique stuff
194
Everybody's so smiley and friendly
195
Check out all the wires here.
196
They're just running every
197
which way I feel bad for the dude whose job it is to have to replace one of those
198
and it's an interesting sort of aesthetic here.
199
The buildings weirdly remind me of like
200
Hong Kong in a way.
201
They're really derelict but it is really cool for photography.
202
It's a particular type of aesthetic.
203
This market is bustling.
204
You can really feel the morning vibes here in Yangon.
205
Thank you.
206
Oh rats, big rats.
207
So we spotted these friendly ladies selling another popular breakfast dish here in Yangon.
208
So it's basically just black sticky rice.
209
She sprinkles a little bit of sesame seeds
210
that have been ground with salt and then it's just topped with some shredded coconut, fresh, freshly shredded coconut.
211
Let's give it a little taste.
212
Really sticky, sticky rice.
213
It's quite salty.
214
Good.
215
Very good.
216
It's a little bit salty.
217
Quite a bit of salt.
218
But the coconut kind of balances it out.
219
Really chewy, sticky rice.
220
It's pretty plain, but good.
221
Thank you.
222
Okay, our next stop is a total hole in the wall hidden gem
223
and you'll only be able to find it
224
if you go on a food tour with Sabah street food tours somewhere in here.
225
So this hidden spot is serving puff pastries
226
so you know Myanmar has a British colonial past
227
so perhaps there is some influence here because we've got one kind
228
that is like a curry goat but it's just like like a pie from England and you can see really fluffy,
229
thin pastry with curry goat inside.
230
And if you look down by my feet here, we've got some friends.
231
Oh my gosh, they're all coming.
232
They want some curry goat puffs.
233
I'm going to try mine first.
234
They're hoping I'm going to drop some.
235
Oh my gosh, that is awesome.
236
It's got a little bit of filling but the pastry is so flaky and buttery.
237
A hint of curry from Super Tender Coat.
238
Hi guys.
239
So buttery, flaky, it's amazing.
240
This is like French level pastry, seriously. So delicate.
241
Yeah.
242
Please don't pee on me.
243
Oh my god.
244
Oh my god!
245
Like three months old.
246
How many of them is there?
247
Four?
248
Canada's house.
249
Four.
250
Four.
251
Four.
252
Three of them.
253
Okay.
254
You want to come to Canada?
255
Here, sit there.
256
Oh!
257
Oh!
258
Okay, so we've got another pastry, puff pastry.
259
These ones are sweet, filled with coconut.
260
You can see a little bit of the coconut sort of pouring out the side there.
261
Listen to this crunch.
262
Mmm, oh my god.
263
Oh my god.
264
For me, this is like perfect breakfast.
265
Sweet, buttery.
266
Look at how airy the inside of that is.
267
It's like so, so delicate and fluffy.
268
That is phenomenal.
269
Sweet coconut flavor, but also a little smoky.
270
Really good.
271
Wow.
272
The crunch is like the next level.
273
It's not greasy at all, actually.
274
It's really good.
275
I can't eat.
276
I need to play with the cat.
277
The coconut inside of that pastry is so good.
278
You can tell that the quality of the coconuts here in Myanmar is so, so fresh and delicious.
279
Not only just a little bit of sugar, so it gives it a sweetness.
280
But everybody doesn't care about the pastries anymore.
281
We're just worried about the cat now.
282
You're not bringing one home.
283
Have you ever heard of cat distribution system?
284
Yeah.
285
This is it.
286
This is it.
287
That was maybe my favorite bite of the day, that coconut puff pastry.
288
So, so delicious.
289
That's going to be it for our breakfast tour.
290
Huge thank you to Mark and Sandy from Saba Street Food Tours.
291
The link for their stuff will be down in the description box
292
so you can have an awesome food tour and experience here in Yangon.
293
And we will see you guys on the next episode of Chopstick Travel.
294
Bye.
