1
think believing in yourself is the most important thing
2
when it comes to learning something difficult or trying something new
3
and the reason i've been thinking about this recently is because
4
i'm planning to make some new types of videos soon
5
which i'm sure i'm going to find very difficult and very challenging
6
because all of the videos that i've made
7
so far are me talking to you in the park sorry the trains behind me
8
if you could hear that but I'm planning to make some videos
9
in like louder places like even louder than this train now
10
and with lots more distractions and lots more people
11
and it will be hard and I was thinking like
12
when I was thinking about how I'm going to do these
13
videos it was like quite fear inducing it was quite stressful
14
and like obviously that's true
15
because like anytime the brain experiences something new it sees it as a threat
16
so it makes sense that I was finding it so stressful
17
but I'm going to do it anyway and it got me thinking
18
when you're trying something new what comes first is it belief
19
or is it action like do you need to believe in yourself to try something
20
or do you try something and then after a while start to believe in yourself.
21
And I think it's an interesting question with regards to language learning as well.
22
So for me, when I started learning Spanish, I thought about, like, how do I want to learn Spanish?
23
That's the first step, right?
24
How do I do this?
25
And I found comprehensible input, and that's how I learned Spanish.
26
And then the next step was, okay, like, how long is this going to take?
27
and I basically found out
28
that to reach a good level it's about a thousand hours a thousand hours I can be confident
29
that I'll be at quite a good level
30
and I thought okay a thousand hours sure that sounds easy
31
and then I broke it down
32
and I was like okay let's say I want to get good in a year
33
and a half call it 500 days that's two hours a day for 500 days
34
and like before I started started doing it like why would
35
you believe like why would you believe in your ability to do something before you've done it
36
and at first I really struggled like I just couldn't hit
37
two hours like I couldn't focus for long enough I couldn't find content
38
that was interesting enough especially when you're a beginner it's really hard to find anything interesting
39
and my time management wasn't good enough
40
and I reached a point almost where it was like am
41
I even going to be able to do this like with the amount
42
that I'm doing each day it's going to take me
43
so long to reach a high level
44
but I kept going I kept iterating I kept trying to
45
improve I kept you know trying to improve my focus trying to find slightly more interesting content
46
and like over time you get better at it
47
and you know suddenly I was doing two hours a day one day
48
and the next day and the next day and then after weeks
49
and months of that you start to build up this like backlog of evidence
50
and you become like subconsciously confident in your ability to do it
51
because you've done it for so long
52
so I think naturally a lot of people talk about belief following action
53
and I think that does make sense and as a side point
54
if you've had days where you're struggling to focus like that's
55
so normal so don't worry like just keep trying um
56
but I think it's it's not always as simple it's not just as simple as saying belief follows action
57
because confidence follows action and ability follows action
58
but there has to be something
59
that gets you to start in the first place like you have to have this self -belief
60
that you can improve at something and that you can because
61
when you first start doing anything anything
62
that is hard to do you're going to be bad at it
63
and there needs to be something that gets you through
64
that initial period where it's really hard
65
and you're not good at it I think a good example
66
is like my YouTube videos like my first videos are
67
so bad like they're really bad um
68
and I knew they would be bad like I didn't I
69
wasn't arrogant enough to think I could just start making YouTube videos and they'd be really good
70
i knew they would be bad but i also was confident
71
that you know other people can do this
72
so like why can't why can't i as well i've just
73
got to put in the time to try to do it
74
and i think something
75
that i like try to keep in mind whenever i'm like trying something new or taking on a new challenge is
76
how to do it first thing second thing is how much
77
time is this going to take me am I willing to put in the time
78
and I think like there's almost I really believe like genuinely there's really very few things
79
that you can get good at obviously like professional sport I'm
80
never going to be a professional football player that's fine
81
but like if lots of other people can do something I think like why can't I
82
and I feel like it's very possible to do a lot of things
83
if you're willing to put in the time is what I'm saying
84
so like is it possible to learn English of course like of course it is
85
and you just need to put in the time doing the right things um
86
and it's something that like I've always felt very confident in my ability to get good at Spanish
87
because lots of other people have done it it's very well
88
documented how to improve in a language uh why can't why can't i do that um
89
and then once you believe once you've got the evidence of
90
you doing what you need to do consistently for a long time um you really feel this belief
91
and you feel this confidence and it's it's a really great feeling
92
and you know
93
but to get there you need to be like very failure
94
resistant you need to get very comfortable with failing um i
95
think like something I try to be in my life is like comfortable with failure
96
because those first phases when you're trying something new
97
and you're putting yourself out there they are really hard
98
because it's not good it's not nice to not be very good at something
99
and I think if you can just get used to failing
100
and be confident in your ability to like fail
101
and not be good and like if you're speaking English be confident
102
or not confident but be willing to make mistakes and to speak
103
and maybe not feel embarrassed that you're making mistakes and realize it's all part of the process
104
i think it's a life skill that i try to follow
105
and i think is quite useful for learning languages i think
106
with other things like maybe learning a language is quite well documented
107
and a lot of people have done it i think with
108
other things like for example i guess making youtube videos it's quite a hard thing to try to do
109
because at least in my friendship group no one makes YouTube videos it's not like something my family do
110
and there's lots of research and lots of evidence
111
that shows we feel more comfortable and we believe in ourselves more
112
when people around us are doing the same thing
113
and we're surrounded by people who have done it
114
so I guess maybe for things
115
that are slightly different this probably touches more on limiting beliefs
116
and you need to like let go of this idea of
117
being like I'm not the type of person who can make YouTube videos
118
or I'm not the type of person who can do this who can do
119
that and I think maybe if you're
120
if you have people in your circle who have learnt English you will probably feel more confident
121
that you can learn English because you know them
122
so you think like why can't I do that but I understand
123
if you're someone who isn't surrounded by anyone who's learned English
124
if your family don't speak English
125
if not a lot of your friends speak English it's difficult to necessarily believe
126
that you could do it as well so I think if you can boil it down to
127
this is how I do it am I willing to do it I think
128
that really helps and of course belief comes
129
and goes um especially with something like learning a language it's
130
like such a long process there's going to be times where
131
you're feeling more confident there's going to be other times where
132
you're not feeling as confident uh for me like recently i've
133
been very busy a lot of my friends have got married recently
134
so i've had a lot of weddings i've had a lot of stags um a stag
135
or a stag do is i guess it's what americans would call like a bachelor party um where the groom
136
or the person getting married the man getting married goes on a night out
137
or a trip away with their closest friends
138
and normally ends up getting really drunk so that's been something
139
that I've I've been very busy basically recently is what I'm trying to say
140
and it's meant that I haven't spent as much time learning Spanish
141
and I think
142
when you go through those like little lulls those like points
143
where you're not doing what you would like to be doing
144
and you're a bit out of routine you subconsciously kind of believe in yourself a bit less
145
and it's harder to get back into that routine
146
but then after being back for a few days
147
and you know back on top of things doing my Spanish
148
again it's like okay like this is something I do I
149
can do it like there's nothing to worry about um
150
so belief definitely comes and goes and it comes
151
and goes with different things at different times like I guess
152
my confidence with making YouTube videos is quite high right now
153
because I've managed to keep producing videos even while I've been so busy
154
um but yeah it's it's not always super consistent um
155
which is also i think quite nice to remember
156
if there's ever a time where you're you're struggling a bit
157
if you can understand me now there's no reason why you can't reach a very high level in english
158
because to be able to understand me you must have put in lots of hours lots
159
and lots of hours and there's no reason why you can't do
160
that again and you can't improve your level even higher so
161
if you've reached this far in the video thank you for
162
watching it's getting very dark now I hope it's come out okay on camera
163
but thank you for watching keep an eye out for those videos I was talking about at the start
164
which are going to be a bit harder for me to
165
make hopefully they'll be coming out soon who knows maybe I'll be terrible at them
166
and they won't see the light of day but we'll see
167
and yeah thank you for watching and I'll see you in the next one.

  • "Backlog of evidence": Kanıt birikimi. "Sürekli çalıştığını gördükçe backlog of evidence artar ve kendine inanmak kolaylaşır."

  2. Küçük parça parça böl: 10-15 saniyelik bölümler halinde ayır. Her bölümü tekrarlayarak telaffuzunu ve ritmini takip et.

Her adım, ilerleme adımıdır.
