1
It is so frustrating that reading English, we understand everything.
2
But then when trying to speak, suddenly all those beautiful words and phrases just vanish from my brain.
3
So here's the thing that most English learners get wrong.
4
They think reading is just about understanding the words, individual words on the page.
5
But actually, there are two completely different skills happening when you read a book.
6
First of all, you're learning language, how native speakers and writers actually put words together.
7
And secondly, you're absorbing ideas and knowledge.
8
I'm going to share in this video my three -step system
9
that transform the way I read English books and also other books.
10
And by the end, you'll know exactly which words to memorize, which sentences to study, and how to actually use what you read in real conversations.
11
So step number one, compare your sentences and activate your vocabulary.
12
All right, here's the foundation of everything.
13
Every time you read a sentence that really captures an idea, well, just pause, stop there, and ask yourself, if I needed to express this exact meaning,
14
how would I say it?
15
Because here's what most people don't realize.
16
Learning a language is all about making connections between old information, which means what you already know and new information.
17
So when you ever come across a well -written sentence, try to express the same idea using your words first, then compare.
18
Let me give you an example.
19
Recently I was reading and I came across this sentence.
20
I felt purposeless, hopeless, and directionless.
21
It wasn't until I was in my darkest hour that a glimmer of hope began to lead me to the light.
22
It's a beautiful sentence, right?
23
Now, if I had to express the idea myself, I would probably say life is meaningless.
24
I find it meaningless.
25
But try to notice the difference.
26
The book uses purposeless and directionless, which are way more specific, but meaningless is vague.
27
It's like this big, broad umbrella term, but purposeless means lacking a specific goal or result.
28
Directionalless means you don't know which way to go see the difference?
29
English is very very logic oriented specific language and
30
when you compare your sentence with the bug sentence you start to see exactly how native speakers structure their thoughts.
31
So it means that the amount of the words that you know doesn't actually matter that much.
32
The real issue in your reading
33
or in your English using is whether you can activate those words
34
when you need them and use exactly the word to describe nuanced feelings.
35
You might recognize directionless when you are reading, but can you pull it out of your brain when you are actually speaking?
36
Probably not, or it's so hard, right?
37
And the reason is so simple, you've only seen it passively.
38
So comparing your sentence structures with what you learned in that book helps you establish a kind of match.
39
Next time you want to say meaningless again in your sentence, you will remember oh there is another more specific way to say it maybe i can say purposeless
40
or directionless right then your brain will start to automatically reach for it
41
when you speak and the second step is summarize each chapter out loud i do it
42
when i was reading this is another practice that's made a
43
huge difference for me after you finish a chapter just close the book
44
and try to summarize what you just read in english out
45
loud i actually use this intelligent notebook from hang on the
46
n10 pro second generation what i love about this is the open system
47
so there are massive resources
48
and also i can quickly transfer books directly from wechat through wi -fi without any complicated steps
49
and also it has a ink screen that's really easy on eyes during long reading sessions
50
but here's the game changer it has a voice to text feature where you can speak
51
and it transcribes everything into text and it's super good for summary
52
and this isn't just useful for reading I actually use this function for media notes too.
53
You can record a whole discussion and then AI can help summarize the key points automatically and also separate different speakers.
54
But even if you don't have this tech, you can just record yourself on your phone.
55
The key is that you are forcing your brain to produce language, not just consume it.
56
And that's the difference between passive reading and active reading.
57
Step number three, split your notes.
58
Let me explain this to you.
59
When I'm reading, I actually use two different types of notes.
60
Highlights for good ideas and concepts that I want to learn.
61
Those are knowledge part.
62
Underlines for interesting vocabulary and sentence structures.
63
This is language part.
64
This is important because you want to separate what you are learning about from what you are learning from.
65
Sometimes I will split my screen and check the dictionary.
66
But here's the thing.
67
Don't look up every word.
68
Just try to guess from the context first.
69
And speaking of the Hangvan N10 Pro 2nd generation, one thing I really appreciate is how lightweight it is.
70
And the stylus is super.. easy to store the side rail is more secure
71
and prevents loss unlike ipad attachment right the writing experience is incredibly smooth too
72
so taking notes feels natural with pressure sensitivity almost like writing on the real paper
73
and if you are someone who loves handwriting notes like me you'll appreciate this this device has ocr technology
74
that recognizes your handwriting and converts it into digital text
75
so you can write naturally with the stylus
76
and later export everything as typed text for easy organization
77
so for slang cultural references or native expressions
78
that don't make sense even with a dictionary that's
79
when i use deep seek to do a deep thinking
80
and get a real meaning all right so you might be wondering now
81
that okay i know all those steps and principles for reading
82
but what should i actually read in my life here's my recommendation start with self -help
83
and non -fiction books
84
and right now i'm reading don't believe everything you think the great mental models
85
and how dynamics explains the world
86
and here's why these are perfect 90 of the content is already familiar to you those principles
87
and ideas you probably already know these principles in your own language
88
so you're just learning how to express them in english no cultural background needed most time unlike novels
89
or literature you don't need to understand obscure cultural references to get the main point right practical usable language
90
If you want to improve your speaking, especially for presentations and debates or professional discussions, this is the language you actually need.
91
You can read this on an e -reader, on your phone, or even get physical books.
92
Honestly, it doesn't matter.
93
What matters is that you make it a habit.
