19
The good, the bad and the expensive.

24
London isn't perfect, but that's what makes it real and interesting
25
so let's start with what makes london special james what draws
26
you to this city after all these years i think it's
27
the incredible layers of history you can see everywhere you can
28
walk past a medieval church then a victorian railway station then
29
a brand new glass skyscraper all within five minutes right and do you think about shakespeare writing plays just down the road,
30
or Churchill giving his wartime speeches.
31
It gives me proper goosebumps.
32
That's incredible for me.
33
It's the amazing diversity.
34
You can travel the world just by taking the tube.
35
One stop you're hearing Bengali, the next it's Spanish, then Yoruba.
36
Exactly.
37
And the museums reflect that perfectly.
38
The British Museum, Tate Modern, V &A, all free.
39
Plus, the career opportunities here are incredible.
40
London is this global hub for finance, tech, creative industries.
41
Mm -hmm.
42
It's where the whole world comes to do business.
43
Right, let's talk neighbourhoods, because that's where London really comes alive.
44
You've lived in quite a few different areas, haven't you, James?
45
I have.
46
Let's start with Camden in North London.
47
I lived there when I was just out of university.
48
Camden Market is absolutely massive.
49
It's like several markets joined together, selling everything from vintage band t -shirts to street food from every corner of the world.
50
Oh, Camden takes me back too, and the music scene there is legendary, isn't it?
51
Incredible.
52
The Roundhouse, Electric Ballroom, Jazz Cafe.
53
I remember seeing Arctic Monkeys at a tiny venue there before they became massive.
54
Camden has this amazing alternative, creative energy.
55
Hmm.
56
The nightlife is brilliant too, though it can get quite rough late at night.
57
Loads of goths and punks hanging around.
58
True.
59
Now let's head east to Shoreditch.
60
I lived there for about five years and it completely transformed while I was there.
61
The street art is incredible.
62
There are these amazing murals on Brick Lane that change every few months.
63
Right.
64
All world famous artists come to paint there and the restaurant's, oh my god, some of the best food in London.
65
But it's changed massively due to gentrification.
66
How so?
67
When I first moved there, there was this tiny Vietnamese place that served the best pho I've ever had for like seven quid.
68
By the time I left, it had been replaced by a £50 per head gastropub.
69
It pushed out a lot of the original Bengali community.
70
That's sad.
71
That's why I love nearby Hackney and Bethnal Green.
72
They still have that authentic East London feel.
73
Amazing Turkish restaurants on green lanes, proper football matches on Hackney marshes at weekends.
74
Yeah, exactly.
75
Now, let's head west to Notting Hill.
76
I actually live there now.
77
Those colourful terraced houses, you know, the ones from the Hugh Grant film, they're gorgeous.
78
Right.
79
But the real magic happens during Carnival in August.
80
Two million people fill the streets with steel drums, Caribbean food, dancing everywhere.
81
It's absolutely mental, but brilliant.
82
And Portobello Road Market on Saturdays is fantastic for vintage shopping and antiques.
83
Central London has Covent Garden, which is touristy, but actually quite lovely.
84
The street performers there are world class.
85
Oprah singers, magicians, human statues, and it's right in the theatre district.
86
You can watch a West End show, then grab dinner and drinks, all within walking distance.
87
Now let's talk about Borough Market near London Bridge.
88
That's proper food paradise.
89
It's this massive Victorian market hall full of artisanal cheese, fresh bread, exotic spices, incredible street food.
90
I remember spending my entire weekly salary there when I first discovered it, just trying different foods from around the world.
91
That brings us to South London, which gets unfairly overlooked.
92
Clapham is where all the young professionals live, brilliant nightlife, loads of trendy pubs and cocktail bars.
93
It's got this really buzzy, social atmosphere.
94
Right.
95
Then there's Brixton, which has this incredible multicultural energy, amazing Caribbean restaurants, brilliant live music venues,
96
and Brixton Market is fantastic for African and Caribbean ingredients.
97
And Greenwich in South East London feels like a proper village.
98
You've got the beautiful maritime history with the Cutty Sark ship, the Royal Observatory where Greenwich Mean Time comes from.
99
Yeah.
100
Greenwich Park with stunning views over London and it's much more affordable than central areas.
101
My friend bought a three -bedroom house there for what a tiny one -bedroom flat costs in central London.
102
The only downside is the extra commute to the centre.
103
That brings us to Transport, which connects all these amazing places.
104
The Tube network is incredible.
105
You can get from Camden to Greenwich in about 40 minutes, Shoreditch to Notting Hill in 30.
106
Exactly, and the further out you go, the more affordable it gets.
107
You get much better value for money in zones 3 and 4.
108
But let's be brutally honest about the challenges now.
109
The biggest one is money.
110
When I lived in Shoreditch, I was paying £1 ,800 a month for a one -bedroom flat that was basically the size of a large cupboard.
111
That's absolutely mental.
112
And it's not just rent.
113
A pint of beer in Notting Hill costs about £8 now.
114
A simple coffee is £5 or £6.
115
Dinner for two at a decent restaurant, easily £100.
116
And then there's the weather.
117
Last winter in London, I didn't see proper sunshine for three weeks straight.
118
It was grey, rainy and dark by half past three in the afternoon.
119
I actually bought one of those special light therapy lamps to help with seasonal depression
120
and the crowds can be absolutely overwhelming especially during rush hour.
121
Oh god the central line at eight in the morning is like hell on earth.
122
You're packed like sardines with hundreds of people everyone sweating and pushing and generally miserable.
123
And in a city of nine million people it can feel quite lonely sometimes.
124
It took me ages to make real friends when I first moved here.
125
Londoners can seem a bit cold and reserved at first.
126
But despite all these challenges we both choose to stay here.
127
There's an energy to London that you simply can't find anywhere else.
128
Last weekend I went to a rooftop cinema in Hackney, a secret speakeasy in Soho, then dancing in Brixton.
129
Exactly!
130
And even in this massive urban jungle you've got beautiful green spaces everywhere Hyde Park,
131
Regent's Park, Hampstead Heath and Richmond Park with wild deer running around.
132
So what practical advice would we give someone thinking about visiting or moving to London?
133
First save money, lots and lots of money.
134
If you're moving here bring at least four months of living expenses but don't let the costs scare you away completely.
135
There are ways to enjoy London affordably.
136
exactly free museums beautiful parks happy hour drinks
137
and pubs amazing street food markets and living in zones three
138

140

141
London will frustrate you, challenge you, maybe make you cry with the rent prices.
142
Mm -hmm, definitely.
143
