Hi everyone!
2
I am Janvi Pavar.
3
Welcome back to my channel or if you guys are new over here then welcome to my channel.
4
In this video we're going to talk about pronunciation.
5
All you have to do is give me seven minutes and I'm going to tell you exactly how to improve your pronunciation.
6
You see
7
when you speak in a language you obviously need good pronunciation
8
like I cannot be talking in English with my very proper Haryanvi accent.
9
I cannot be doing that.
10
It will not sound good.
11
So instead of that, how can you improve your pronunciation?
12
Also, my camera is a bit tilted today and that is because I could not balance it well.
13
So please bear with it.
14
And now let's get started.
15
So number one tip to improve your pronunciation is shadowing.
16
I think I cannot stress this enough.
17
And I've even made a very proper video on shadowing.
18
What does shadowing mean?
19
It means to mimic.
20
It means to imitate.
21
For example, your shadow is an exact reflection of you.
22
Obviously not with the features and all, but that is your shadow.
23
So as the name suggests, shadowing means to mimic something, to imitate something.
24
So same you're going to do with your pronunciation.
25
You're going to listen to a speaker.
26
It can be a native English speaker, a non-native English speaker.
27
As long as they have good pronunciation, you're good to go with them.
28
You're going to listen and then you're going to imitate everything that they have said.
29
You're going to listen to every little sound, every little word.
30
See, when you're improving your pronunciation, it's important that you do not just listen to words, but you listen to sounds.
31
That's important.
32
For example, there are vowels, there are consonants, there are diphthongs, there are monophthongs.
33
So you need to listen to each single one of these so that you can focus on how to pronounce each sound.
34
For example, if I'm saying sound, so you're gonna focus on how i'm pronouncing sa and then on
35
so it's sound sound not sound so that's ow so instead of
36
that you're gonna listen exactly how i am pronouncing for this
37
you can even just reduce the speed rate of this video for example if it's at 1.5x,
38
then make sure to decrease it to probably 0.25 or 0.75.
39
That'll work absolutely fine.
40
But the thing is, you have to listen to sounds, not just words, not just letters, but sounds.
41
They are important.
42
And then you're going to mimic the whole thing.
43
Then you're going to shadow.
44
For example, if you listen to me for five minutes and you noted down some words, like this is the first word that I learned, then this is the second one, then this is third.
45
So if you learned any words, make notes, make a diary, approximately 15 to 20 words,
46
and then you repeat those words in the same way I've said those words.
47
Perfect.
48
Got it.
49
Now let's move on to the next step.
50
Now you're going to record yourself.
51
I think till now I've never actually told you anything about recording, but recording, it helps a lot with your pronunciation.
52
For example, if I'm recording a video and if I listen to it once again, then I'm going to see, oh, here, this point, it does not sound too good.
53
So I already know what kind of mistakes I'm committing or if there are some changes I'd like there to be done.
54
So same way, you're going to record yourself while you're shadowing.
55
Then you're going to compare your voice, not just your voice, but your sounds, the way you're pronouncing things to the speaker that you have listened to.
56
So you're going to compare the two things.
57
And believe me, when you listen to yourself pronouncing and when you listen to just yourself speaking, you're going to see, oh my God, this is how I pronounce.
58
I'm sharing this from a very personal experience.
59
Believe me on this.
60
This is exactly how you're going to feel.
61
So record yourself.
62
After recording yourself, then check out your loopholes.
63
For example, if I said the word example and you said example, then you are going to see, oh, it's not L.
64
It's L.
65
So you're going to notice the difference.
66
So whatever your loopholes are, wherever you think, oh, this is where I made a mistake or this is where I'm not pronouncing it perfectly enough,
67
then you're going to compare it and repeat it once more.
68
Record again and then compare again and then repeat it once more.
69
See, nowadays, a lot of students are like, but we don't have a teacher.
70
See, you do not need a teacher.
71
Well, obviously, you need some teachers to guide you.
72
For example, I.
73
So, you can take guidance from me.
74
There are many teachers online who you can learn from, you know anybody i'm not saying you should learn from me
75
but you can learn from anybody out there
76
so what you're going to do very simply you do not
77
need a very proper teacher like going for two hours to
78
that teacher and then learning everything no you just need your phone you got your phone with you record
79
and then all you have to do is compare
80
and then repeat it step number three i don't know
81
if you guys have heard about this
82
but this is ipa ipa means international phonetic alphabet
83
so these are all of the sounds that we pronounce on a daily basis.
84
Well, not on a daily basis, but yeah, these are all of the sounds in your English language.
85
So there are consonants, there are vowels, there are diphthongs.
86
Diphthongs are vowels that are mixed together.
87
So basically two vowels are mixed together and that makes a diphthong.
88
For example, AI, RAE, RAIN.
89
For example, sound. So OU.
90
So these are diphthongs.
91
And then we've got your consonants, then we've got your soft Ds, your hard, your th sound.
92
Then we've got dark L, hard L, soft T, tap t hearty glottal t a lot of t's then we have got your r's
93
so we have everything in this table everything in this chart
94
now you have to learn it you have to pronounce every single sound
95
so this is pa this is th now th has different sounds for example one is th
96
and another one is the the so it's soft and hard
97
so you're going to come across such differences in your chart in your table now obviously now
98
that i've told you this like you have to learn all of these sounds not basically cram these
99
but you just have to go through these
100
and after going through these make sure to repeat it over
101
and over just like
102
if it was in shadowing you had to mimic then you repeat these sounds
103
so th the okay fa va va va va okay
104
so it's ta okay it's not ta ta ta it's ta
105
it's not da da da it's da okay it's digital not digital digital keep it soft
106
so according to those sounds this is how you practice
107
and improve your pronunciation so follow these three steps it's very important that
108
if you want to improve your pronunciation your listening should be
109
strong i always say this in most of my videos that if you want to improve your speaking skills, your listening skills should be strong.
110
Also, if you want to focus on a very proper accent, for example, British or American, then I already have my British and American accent courses.
