1
Do you have any crazy road stories you can share from over the years?
2
Oh, my God.
3
I mean, the one that comes to mind is when I was crossing over the Canada border and they detained me.
4
Hi, Olivia Rodrigo.
5
Hey, how are you?
6
I'm doing awesome.
7
It is so good to see you.
8
I think the only time I've met you was backstage at a Jingle Ball once.
9
Oh.
10
You were so sweet then and so excited for you now.
11
Thank you.
12
Great to re-meet you, sort of, you know.
13
You as well.
14
Yeah, Jingle Ball is very fun and a little overwhelming.
15
So this is a chiller environment for us to hang.
16
How was your Coachella experience with Addison?
17
Surprising everybody.
18
Oh, yeah, it was so much fun.
19
I mean, I love Addison.
20
I've been friends with her for a while.
21
And Coachella is just such a fun environment.
22
I had a great time.
23
It was beautiful out.
24
I saw so many great bands and great artists.
25
So it was rad.
26
I have a question.
27
Maybe it's like a fan theory question of my own.
28
Your first two albums were one-word titles, you know, Sour and Guts.
29
the next one quite lengthy you know what made you break
30
that that trend
31
if you want to call it what made you change up
32
yeah i guess i was just running out of four letter
33
words um we can think of a few you know yeah yeah some some not
34
so safe for radio ones
35
but um yeah i uh i don't know i always knew going out to write this album
36
that i didn't want it to be four letters it's just
37
that i wanted to do something different
38
and right um i really love the title you seem pretty sad for a girl
39
so in I feel like it perfectly encapsulated the themes that I was going for on this album.
40
I was really interested in writing a sad love song, and so I felt like the title fit perfectly.
41
Why did you pick that?
42
I mean, it fit perfectly, but why did it fit perfectly?
43
Yeah, I mean, I set out to make this album, and I was in a place where I was really in love
44
and in kind of like a big girl relationship for the first time.
45
And so I was tasked with writing a love song, and I kind of went back and listened to all my favorite love songs
46
and realized that the reason why I love them so much is not because they're so happy and joyful, but because they're kind of sad and,
47
you know, there's an element of longing or fear or like depression or whatever in the songs.
48
And that's what kind of grounds it and makes it feel human and moving.
49
And so that was the kind of challenge
50
that I set out in making You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl
51
So in Love is trying to write a song
52
that was about romantic love that still captured the sort of more depressing aspect of it.
53
Personal favorite track or two from the album.
54
I know if I ask you this tomorrow, you're going to say another couple of songs.
55
I know, they're like my babies.
56
I really love The Cure.
57
That's my favorite.
58
And also I love Honeybees.
59
That's another one of my favorites.
60
I really love Maggots for Brains, too.
61
I'd say those three.
62
Sorry, you asked for two and I gave you three.
63
Three is fine.
64
Can you describe the sound and the vibe of this album?
65
Yeah.
66
I mean, really, I think the sentiment of the song comes first before any type of musical production elements. And
67
so I think I wanted the album to capture how tumultuous it feels to fall in love you're like up
68
and down and you feel great about yourself
69
and you feel bad about yourself
70
and you're like they love me oh my god do they love me like what the hope
71
and disappointment and there's just like so many highs and lows
72
and so I think I wanted the album to reflect
73
that it's very orchestral I think
74
and I like was listening to a lot of like older English bands
75
when I was writing in so hopefully those which bands
76
which bands were you like i was listening to a lot of the cure
77
and new order and depeche mode and like suzy the banshees
78
and stuff like that and so that was like the playlist
79
that was in my head like
80
while i was writing i hope it it you know came through a little bit it is a pop record
81
but um so yeah that's that's sort of the vibe what song
82
and i asked this for well there's a reason i ask it
83
and i'll tell you why after you answer
84
but what song almost for whatever reason almost did not make the album there's a song called less
85
that almost didn't make the album
86
that was like an addition in the last half uh
87
or in the last like moment um i don't know why i was just like feeling weird about it
88
and i i just i think i think it was just very raw
89
and vulnerable and sometimes it's a little scary to put out songs
90
that are like that personal but i think
91
that that's also one of the most beautiful things about putting out music
92
because you can like write your heart
93
and have a medium for all of these feelings that are kind of hard to express.
94
The reason I ask that is a lot of times when a song, for whatever reason, almost doesn't make it, that becomes either a huge track or a fan favorite.
95
I don't know.
96
There's something in the air.
97
I guess we'll see.
98
Fingers crossed.
99
Hey, favorite, impossible question here.
100
Another one.
101
Favorite lyric on the album.
102
Oh, my gosh.
103
I know.
104
You can go for a couple if you want.
105
I mean, I feel like so many lyrics, like in The Cure, I think that song is really the thesis statement of the album And the main line,
106
I guess, would be It's like, I'm unraveled Why can't you stitch me up?
107
Why can't it ever be enough?
108
Those lines were just so succinctly Yes, this is You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love
109
And I think when I wrote that song Everything else kind of fell into place around it When you wrote that lyric, were you in a studio?
110
Were you at your house and just kind of jotted on your phone real quick?
111
Yeah, I wrote the initial
112
Verse and a kind of
113
sketch of the chorus by myself and then I brought it to Dan
114
and he's like this is really good we should finish this
115
and so we wrote the rest of the chorus together
116
and the bridge and yeah I remember it feeling really magical
117
that day I remember us leaving the studio
118
and being like we did a good job today
119
and it's not always we don't always feel like
120
that sometimes we're like we've wasted all of our time so it's a nice feeling.
121
Such a good feel.
122
I think we got something here.
123
Yeah.
124
Hey give me something on Drop Dead what's a little backstory on you know the first track?
125
Yeah I mean I really love this track it It was always the first single in my mind, the first song on the record.
126
It's about a first date.
127
It's about a first date that went very well.
128
Congrats.
129
Thank you.
130
It's always a good feeling.
131
But, yeah, I just wanted to capture this sort of energy of being on a great first date,
132
of really liking someone and hoping that it works out and being a little nervous and anxious. So, yeah,
133
that's the idea behind it all right olivia leading up to
134
the album release there was a mural i think it was
135
on melrose here in la um it was painted over several
136
weeks how did this whole thing uh how did it come
137
together how did it happen yeah well i was gonna do
138
a few things differently for this album the first was i
139
wanted to change the color obviously it's not purple anymore
140
and i wanted to switch up the four letter words like we were talking about
141
so i thought it would be really fun
142
if like there was an in real life way to like signify the change um
143
and people really took to it it was really fun i got
144
so many texts from people like what does this wall mean
145
what's going on what what shade is it turning um and
146
but it's just so funny your friends are even curious yeah yeah just people
147
that i know they're like oh my god why am i
148
watching this wall on my tick tock like for you page um
149
but i don't know it's just
150
so fun i i i really like doing things in real life you know what i mean like we're
151
so obviously connected through our phones and stuff like that
152
but it's really nice
153
when music can bring people together in real life even like outside of a concert environment
154
so that's been really fun to get to see people kind of make the pilgrimage over to the wall
155
and sometimes I've driven past a few times
156
and there's like girls hanging out I'm like hey oh my god did they flip I don't even know
157
if they saw me I was a little too nervous but um
158
yeah maybe one of these days
159
if I had a mural I'd be driving by like god
160
nobody better tag this I know graffiti artists away hey did
161
you uh did you paint any of it personally like late
162
when nobody was watching
163
or no I actually didn't I should have I there's a
164
gum wall right now like kind of like the one in Seattle, because it's the line in Drop Dead.
165
I've got chewing gum and a bunch of stuff I'd like to know.
166
And so there's a bunch of gum on the wall, and I put the first piece.
167
So if you go there, my piece of gum is on that wall.
168
There's some Olivia gum.
169
It's pretty gross.
170
Hey, Olivia, how are, I mean, I know tour coming up at some point here.
171
Yeah.
172
Tour talks, how are plans going?
173
What can you say?
174
Maybe all of it's top secret.
175
I don't know.
176
I mean, it's not top secret.
177
I just really don't really know that much, to be honest.
178
I've kind of been so album mode.
179
But, yeah, I'm really excited to play these songs live.
180
I think playing them live gives them a whole different meaning
181
and I kind of miss being on the road being being able to connect with fans You know
182
so up close and personal is a really special feeling
183
so I'm excited Do you enjoy like I know you love being on stage
184
but tour life road life is kind of a lot going on You got that schedules are super tight.
185
Some people love that some people don't do you like road life and all that comes with it?
186
Loaded question some days.
187
I love it and some days.
188
Oh my god.
189
I miss my own bed But you know, it's fun.
190
I mean, there's two sides to every coin.
191
I like love being able to travel and go to new places and experience things and experience different cultures and stuff.
192
But it is hard.
193
It's especially hard to be creative on the road, I find.
194
Like, I can never really, like, sit down at the piano and, like, write my heart out when I'm just, like, so constantly all over the place.
195
So, you know, it's a give and take.
196
Do you have any crazy road stories you can share from over the years?
197
Oh, my God.
198
I mean, the one that comes to mind is when I was crossing over the Canada border and they detained me.
199
Oh, lovely.
200
And they thought that I was Olivia Rodriguez, who had been arrested for something like a DUI or something.
201
And I was like, I'm Olivia Rodrigo.
202
I promise.
203
Classic mistake.
204
I get it all the time.
205
But, like, please, my record's clean.
206
I've heard some wild stories, and that's going to go in my little cabinet there.
207
Oh, my God.
208
Hey, message to fans.
209
These fans have loved you from day one.
210
I mean, they're so excited for this next album.
211
And what would you like to say to this crazy, lovely, amazing group of people?
212
Gosh, I mean, love y'all.
213
It's such an honor to get to grow up alongside you guys, and I'm really, really grateful that people are still tuning in to hear what I have to say on these songs.
214
And I never take it for granted, so thank you very much.
215
Olivia, I am obsessed with the paranormal.
216
Ghosts, haunted houses, all that stuff.
217
I love this because I am too.
218
Okay, look, I've got a podcast called Paranormalish, and what I do is I talk to people year-round who've had these experiences.
219
And if you haven't, that's fine.
220
Have you ever had anything you would consider a paranormal encounter?
221
I'm living in a haunted house right now.
222
Stop it.
223
I'm living in a haunted house.
224
Give me some details.
225
But it's fine.
226
Is it though?
227
Love, love the ghost.
228
Like super nice friendly ghost.
229
My friend was in there alone one time
230
and was trying to mess with me and held the phone up to the TV and was like, ha ha ghost if you're in here, like turn the TV on for Olivia.
231
Whatever.
232
Nothing happens.
233
It's like 10 o'clock at night.
234
The TV starts blaring an old Turner classic movie at full volume.
235
Shut up.
236
Like a movie from the 50s.
237
and she ran out and she was so scared.
238
It's never happened to me, though, because I am respectful.
239
Have you ever looked up, like, the backstory of, like, who you think might be in there?
240
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
241
I actually, my mom knows a lot about it, but I prefer not to know.
242
Oh, my, okay.
243
One of these days.
244
Oh, God, I hope I'm not, like, doing bad juju saying this on the radio, but no, peace and love, peace and love to the ghost, and I love living in my house.
245
Well, ghosts are like people.
246
I take good care of it.
247
Yeah, ghosts are like people, I think.
248
There's some good people and some bad.
249
You got a good one, apparently.
250
I got a good, really good.
251
If anything else happens, interesting, God, you have to share this.
252
Okay, okay.
253
I'll keep you updated.
254
Thank you for hanging out, Olivia Rodrigo.
255
Thank you.
256
At the end of every interview, fist bump to make it official.
257
Give me a love.
258
Grrr.
259
Bye.
260
Yay.
