1
Afghanistan is one of the most dangerous countries on the planet.
2
For women, some of what I've discovered here has been shocking.
3
But the Taliban are not just restricting women.
4
Music has been pushed out of public life, dress is controlled, and traditions are under pressure.
5
Yet Afghan culture has not disappeared.
6
So for my final film, I went looking for the Afghanistan that's still holding on to it.
7
And it brought me here to Bamiyan.
8
We're starting in Bamyang Bazaar and we are going to be buying some food
9
because there is a very special lunch that's going to be cooked for tomorrow.
10
Tomorrow we are meeting with a local family and we're going to have a really nice lunch.
11
Oh, my head just hit the chicken.
12
So we're getting enough chicken to feed everyone so I can't concentrate now.
13
Knowing times are really tough, I wanted to make sure the lunch wouldn't cost this family anything
14
so I'm picking up all the ingredients and they'll take care of the cooking.
15
Hello, how are you?
16
I'm good thanks, how are you?
17
I'm fine, nice to meet you.
18
Thank you.
19
Where are you from?
20
I'm from London.
21
London?
22
London.
23
Oh great.
24
How about you?
25
Good.
26
I am, yeah, and then I say, It's all happening here, you see?
27
There's any life out there.
28
And what's the name of the dish we're doing tomorrow?
29
Koloji.
30
Koloji?
31
Yeah.
32
Koloji?
33
Am I saying that right?
34
Yeah.
35
They're laughing at me.
36
Chicken tikka.
37
Yeah.
38
This is the spice.
39
So they mix it with the chicken and keep it at least for like 12 hours and then they cook it.
40
I see.
41
May I have a look around this supermarket because it looks very interesting.
42
Let me see it looks quite quite extensive.
43
Let's have a look at this extensive supermarket.
44
Oh what have we got around here?
45
Oh the sweets, these guys like these sweets, look with their chai.
46
I've noticed that.
47
We've got dates, what else have we got?
48
Oh look the dried mulberries.
49
In every corner of this supermarket there's like a different smell and I can smell very strongly the tea leaves here.
50
These kind of thermos flasks remind me so much of Afghanistan
51
and we have green tea in them and we take them up mountains and then we have our tea It's really nice.
52
They look like Pringles but they're not.
53
They're called Jacka.
54
Jacka.
55
Pop and you can't stop.
56
They got everything.
57
I almost thought that was vodka.
58
See Nutella's made it here.
59
Do they have iced coffee? Is it?
60
Could I try it?
61
Do you mind?
62
What's it called?
63
Coffo.
64
Coffo.
65
Coffo coffee.
66
Latte.
67
Latte for.
68
Yeah right into the wagon into the beast mobile oh my goodness look who it is!
69
How are you?
70
Zio is lovely to see you!
71
Zio was my driver in 2024 and he is the son of my now driver Coco.
72
Tell him that I think his dad trained him well.
73
Oh that's not bad, that's pretty good.
74
I like it.
75
I thought it was all about the green tea here.
76
I like Kofo.
77
Right so this is our hotel.
78
Salam.
79
Yeah, in we go.
80
Hello.
81
This is nice isn't it?
82
Salam!
83
It feels very calm in here.
84
It's very relaxing.
85
I like what it's spaces.
86
Oh wow, oh it's lovely.
87
Is it okay?
88
Yeah it's great.
89
Oh it's really lovely thank you very much.
90
Thanks everybody.
91
And the bathroom in here.
92
Let's have a look.
93
Yeah.
94
Oh it's perfect.
95
Look at that.
96
A shower and a toilet and a sink.
97
I love it.
98
Now you can't come to Bamiyan and miss visiting the Buddha caves.
99
They date back 1500 years.
100
There were two huge upright Buddha statues.
101
One was 55 metres tall, the other was 38 metres tall.
102
In 2001 the Taliban at the time blew them up.
103
This guy here is senior Taliban governor Abdullah Sahadi and he's not the sharpest tool in the box.
104
He recently told the BBC he helped destroy the Buddhas because idol worship is not allowed in Islam.
105
However, had he actually read the Quran, he would know that it explicitly commands Muslims not to insult or curse the idols that other people worship.
106
It's also one of the biggest own goals the Taliban have made
107
because this place would have encouraged thousands of tourists per year.
108
I told you they aren't the smartest.
109
So I'm stood at the base of the smaller of the two Buddhas and this one was 38 metres.
110
What we're going to do now is we're going to go inside and upstairs
111
and then apparently we can walk along to the other one.
112
Hopefully it's cool inside, Mohamedjan.
113
Yeah.
114
How many steps are there?
115
Do you know?
116
Only 200.
117
Actually, don't tell me.
118
I don't want to know.
119
I don't want to know.
120
How many steps is that?
121
This one?
122
Yeah, how many?
123
Maybe 15.
124
And you said 200.
125
Yeah, 15.
126
They're probably about a foot deep, aren't they?
127
Oh my goodness.
128
Please take one big joke.
129
Oh, I don't know, should we do it right by the edge?
130
Bit scary.
131
Camera failed, wait a sec.
132
Yeah, it's fine.
133
Hang on, don't we just clean your lens a bit?
134
Your lens is a bit dirty.
135
Okay, sorry, I've done it again.
136
Sorry.
137
Alright ready?
138
Do you want a bit of the view?
139
Alright ready?
140
He's very dark.
141
Wow!
142
Look at that, 1500 years old.
143
So there's some colour left behind.
144
Oh, it must have been amazing.
145
Wow!
146
All these little rooms!
147
What's this in here then?
148
Not a cave, maybe they put a door to keep it like...
149
Look, more caves in there.
150
Wow!
151
We did a lot of steps up and down in there, and at high altitude I can tell you it felt like 20 ,000, not 200.
152
Now, alarmingly, the darkness here alerted Mohamed Jahn to the fact that the exit door down those steps was locked.
153
So we are locked in, but Mohammed -jan's made a phone call
154
because I definitely don't want to go all the way back up along and back down again.
155
Tasha call.
156
Tasha call.
157
That is very much appreciated.
158
Thank you, Tasha call, Tasha call.
159
Can you imagine if we'd got all that way and not been able to get out, I would have been horrified.
160
just as well you've got the hotline the hotline to this
161
guy i i don't know what i would have done
162
if you'd said whoops i'm gonna try a restaurant in bambian
163

164
a moon lady moon lady moon lady she sounds very nice
165
i think the the chef is a The chef is a lady.
166
That's why it's called Moon Lady.
167
Well, I should imagine the food will be fantastic.
168
These guys don't look like moon ladies though.
169
My nickname is Mom, but my full name is Mom Mom Mom Mom.
170
It's called Mom Mom Mom.
171
It's American isn't it?
172
Mom.
173
Maybe he is putting on a wrong t -shirt.
174
I think the t -shirt might be for his mom.
175
Oh, smells good in here.
176
We are here really early but that's because we've been getting up really early
177
and having early dinners so it's empty at the minute but it will be packed later.
178
Just taking a little look, I've noticed the weather in Bamyang can change, it can turn on a sixpence and it was really hot this morning.
179
Look at it now.
180
Proper storm brewing.
181
Look at that.
182
What tea is this then?
183
It is saffron tea.
184
I haven't had saffron tea yet on this trip.
185
Saffron we grow locally in Herald.
186
Oh you grow it in Harat.
187
Brilliant.
188
Here you go.
189
Oh it's fresh isn't it?
190
Yeah it's very refreshing.
191
I'm looking here at Zio.
192
Come on, come on.
193
So we've got Zio and Zio's dad, Kaka.
194
Come on.
195
Now, we are looking at their faces to see what the similarities are.
196
Can you smile?
197
I think it's their smile.
198
It is.
199
It's the smile.
200
Different eyes, I think.
201
Different nose father and son both absolutely lovely
202
looks like a boxer yeah did he break his nose yeah did he how did he break his nose
203
What was he doing to break his nose?
204
She should do it again.
205
I was a kid, I was a kid.
206
He used to fall over a lot? Did he?
207
Really?
208
Yeah.
209
He's pretty good.
210
He's very good though.
211
Remember archery in Nuristan?
212
He's very good.
213
He obviously became coordinated later in that.
214
He was good.
215
He's doing arm wrestle with Rahmat.
216
It's good, it's strong.
217
Because it's early here, we are just going to have a snack.
218
So we're just going to go for some local delicacies, probably Arshak, Mantu, my faves.
219
And they're throwing in a Bamiyanian, Bamiyanian?
220
Bamiyanian?
221
Bamiyanian speciality.
222
Got the sauces.
223
Ooh, a lot of bread.
224
Yeah, it smells really good.
225
I can't wait to try this.
226
I really like Arshak.
227
I think it's my favourite.
228
Oh, this is interesting.
229
So this is the Bamiyanian one.
230
Yeah.
231
Ah, so it's like bread.
232
It's got onions on top.
233
Bread, butter and onion.
234
Karuchi's nice.
235
Yeah.
236
Very creamy.
237
It's famous.
238
It's really tasty.
239
Yeah.
240
I'm surprised.
241
I don't normally like yogurt things, but it's actually, it's really tasty.
242
It's quite sweet.
243
It's very creamy.
244
I like the onions on top.
245
They give it a bit of depth.
246
That's a nice dish.
247
Oh, I love Arshak so much.
248
Oh shucks, really good.
249
I like that.
250
Delicious.
251
I really like that.
252
After dinner I headed back to the hotel for an early night.
253
The next day it was time for that special lunch I'd bought the ingredients for earlier, with a family I've been supporting for over a year.
254
Their father died suddenly last year, leaving four young children behind, and life became incredibly difficult.
255
With the help from people on social media, I was able to raise money to help with food, and now I wanted to see how they were doing.
256
They'll need support for some time yet, so any help you can give would mean a huge amount.
257
You can donate through Revive Afghanistan.
258
The link is in the description below.
259
I can see some familiar faces.
260
Hello!
261
Hello!
262
Nice to meet you!
263
Nice to meet you!
264
Hello!
265
Hello!
266
How are you?
267
Yay!
268
How are you?
269
I'm very welcome.
270
Yeah!
271
Oh, you're welcome. So, I have just, the kids are just getting used to me
272
and I've brought them some little gifts from the UK
273
which I thought would be nice so we're now going to see what they make of them.
274
I bought some pencil cases and stationery from the shop Smigal in the UK to help with their studies.
275
Last year when I'd heard about how sad they were I decided to try
276
and organise for a local teacher to go to their house
277
and give them some lessons at home including English lessons and this has been a major turning point in their mental health.
278
I got to chat to their teacher.
279
At first when they lost their father they were really good.
280
But then I appreciate them and they became more resilient and they started to try hard and study their lessons.
281
Yeah, that's so good.
282
So they're a lot happier now basically.
283
Now we have a special lunch here.
284
This is the time to eat the food called Remind Me.
285
Colohi.
286
Colohi.
287
I can't say it.
288
Colohi.
289
Yeah, Colohi.
290
Okay, so the chicken's been marinated in the spice.
291
Can I see?
292
I see.
293
So lots of different packages here.
294
And it is enough for 20 people.
295
Enough for 20 people.
296
Fantastic.
297
Like this.
298
Yeah.
299
Just drop them in, yeah?
300
Very hot.
301
Bit like a volcano.
302
Wow, look at you, Mohammed -chan.
303
Yeah, I'm doing it.
304
It's like 20 times in a year.
305
It's great, isn't it?
306
It's a bit like a tree, isn't it?
307
Very dusty.
308
I didn't expect it to go like that.
309
Did you just break it down?
310
That's brilliant, isn't it?
311
Is this the big reveal?
312
Yeah.
313
Okay.
314
Let's see, let's see.
315
Just digging them out like that.
316
Wasn't it?
317
Wow.
318
Oh that smells good.
319
These look delicious well thank you so much.
320
Should I take it?
321
It's probably a bit hot isn't it?
322
There we go.
323
Got it.
324
Thank you.
325
Mmm.
326
Mmm.
327
That's delish.
328
Mmm.
329
I love it.
330
Mazador.
331
Cool.
332
Mmm.
333
It's really soft and lightly spiced not too spicy just how I like it.
334
Oh very good.
335
He's so cute isn't he?
336
He's just so cute.
337
Hearing the kids laugh absolutely made my day
338
and I hope I can keep supporting them until life feels a little more secure.
339
Then it was time to head back into Bamyang for something completely different.
340
In Bamyang there's something really special and that is a women's market.
341
Wow.
342
Oh hello cutie.
343
Hello cutie.
344
So we have all sorts of shops don't we we've got
345
like the dress shops beautiful traditional outfits look here you see
346
hi may i see thank you you have some beautiful outfits they are very beautiful
347
and where would you wear something like that we don't be pushing me right up in the ceremony it's like weddings,
348
parties, parties yeah this is i mean this is really big wow it looks heavy yeah thank you
349
wow that's that is heavy isn't it yeah it is with the earrings so i hold an earring up here look
350
How's that?
351
How do I look?
352
Is it good?
353
Totally look Alaphon.
354
Yeah Afghan now?
355
Yeah?
356
Yeah.
357
Maybe I could buy a bracelet from her.
358
These are beautiful, right.
359
I like the natural stone of them.
360
I just see.
361
Aren't they lovely?
362
So this lady here was saying that, oh I like these,
363
that times are hard at the minute and that is because of all the walls you see that are surrounding Afghanistan.
364
it affects business quite a lot so we need the world to calm down
365
so that these people can get back to earning money again She has a question for you Yes,
366
certainly You are already from I am No,
367
it's good, it's good English I am from London in England Inglistan Inglistan, yeah, Inglistan London in Inglistan Yeah Yeah,
368
it was nice to meet you Nice to meet you too.
369
Thank you so much.
370
Oh my name is Carrie.
371
Carrie what is your name?
372
Hadija.
373
Hadija.
374
Nice to meet you Hadija.
375
Nice to meet you too.
376
Awesome.
377
Right thank you then.
378
You're welcome.
379
Bye bye.
380
How are you?
381
Good.
382
Oh you have a beautiful shop as well.
383
Do you like working here?
384
Yes, it's a very amazing job.
385
Yes, and where do you get all of your things from? From women.
386
The women.
387
Oh, the women in Afghanistan?
388
Yes.
389
In the local area, in Bamiyan?
390
Especially in villages.
391
In the villages.
392
That's fantastic.
393
These are handmade.
394
Maybe if I could take a green scarf, because I've been looking for a green scarf.
395
Yeah, it feels very soft.
396
What is Bamiyan like as a place to live?
397
We are free.
398
I like this.
399
Yes, it feels different here.
400
Bamiyan feels different.
401
Yeah, from other moments.
402
Yeah, you're lucky.
403
We are actually relaxing.
404
Good.
405
And I have to say, the scenery, the views are,
406
I think, some of the best in the world here so beautiful I absolutely love this so soft right Tashukul bye Hulefez
407
chatting to the ladies here basically what they're saying is
408
that each shop run by a woman then buys things in
409
which are handmade most of the time from their own village
410
so it's not just the women that you're seeing in here
411
that you're supporting it's like it's all of like 10 -15 in their village at home as well
412
so it's a really good initiative so if you come to Bamiyan come here
413
and buy some things and help support these women.
414
For my final stop in Bamiyan I wanted to go back somewhere really special,
415
a village I'd visited in 2024 that became one of my favourite memories of Afghanistan.
416
But before I went I had one important job to do, pick up a few gifts.
417
We're walking through the very busy market, all sorts of things in here, there's shoes, there's food, there's clothing, there's toys.
418
Now we've got a range of ages haven't we?
419
These are nice.
420
Why don't we get some of these? Are they good?
421
Put them in as well because they can't be that much.
422
Hair clips and cars.
423
Nothing like gender stereotyping.
424
$8.
425
$8.
426
Let's just have to take the bag.
427
Yeah, let's take the bag.
428
Hello.
429
Everybody's coming up saying hello here, very friendly.
430
I don't know.
431
I don't know.
432
I don't know.
433
Tell me about it.
434
Basically this is about $13 and we're going to get the balls, we're going to get the hair clips and we're going to get the cars.
435
That's cool.
436
Right, we're going.
437
So one of my fondest memories from my entire trip two
438
years ago was visiting a local village here where there were kids flying paper airplanes.
439
Oh wow.
440
Oh wow.
441
Wow!
442
Wow!
443
I recognise these faces!
444
Hello!
445
Hello!
446
Hi!
447
She was so shy last time, this time she's actually shaking my hand.
448
Oh my goodness, hi!
449
I recognise you as well!
450
Hello Salaam, nice to see you!
451
Right, this is for flying the aeroplanes.
452
We're going to fly some more aeroplanes.
453
And yeah, should we do this?
454
I remember you!
455
Maybe I didn't meet this one though.
456
You must be new, you're the new addition.
457
Come on, come on, come on, come on, come on.
458
Come on.
459
Say to him, it's really nice for me to see him again.
460
I'm so excited to see him again.
461
It looks so good.
462
It's got the biggest paper airplane competition going on in the whole of Afghanistan.
463
Ready?
464
Let's go.
465
Let's see if it's like Concorde.
466
I got those socks out.
467
Thank you.
468
1, 2, 3
469
So now we're going to try as best as we can
470
and recreate a photo from two years ago There's the photo It'll be brilliant, yeah, yeah, you're next to me You sit first Okay, where do I go?
471
Come on, she has the money Yeah, yeah, yeah, we've got the addition this side Yeah?
472
What's your show?
473
We almost achieved it but Walid was missing as he was herding goats.
474
He arrived as we were about to leave so I took a photo and left a promise to do some photoshopping.
475
I really hope you've enjoyed seeing this side of Bamiyan.
476
And if you can help me continue supporting the family you saw earlier, please donate whatever you can, small or large, through Revive Afghanistan.
