1
Good morning.
2
Let's begin with
3
that new controversy for the AFL with Richmond players filmed acting
4
inappropriately during Mad Monday celebrations in the wake of the Swans scandal.
5
Today, Melbourne reporter Kiara Parker has more.
6
This is another headache for the AFL.
7
The video that has emerged was filmed during Mad Monday celebrations at a Gippsland pub.
8
It appears to show Richmond players re-enacting alleged scenes inside the Pullman Hotel involving five Swans players.
9
It shows one Richmond player pulling down his pants as another player smacks him on the buttocks several times
10
and one player whips a teammate with a belt.
11
The Garfield Hotel where this was filmed has put out a
12
statement on social media saying it thinks the incident has been blown out of proportion.
13
But the stunt comes a week after the police investigation was
14
launched into sexual assault allegations made by three women involving five Swans players and it comes as four Swans officials,
15
including coach Dean Cox, give formal statements to police as the investigation continues.
16
The AFL hasn't ruled out further punishment for the five Swans players stood down.
17
It says it'll conduct its own investigation once the police probe is complete.
18
Sydney's morning peak hour commute has been thrown into chaos with
19
trains brought to a halt on a major line in the city's north.
20
Gus MacDonald joins me now live with the latest from Chatswood.
21
Gus, the rail network needed urgent repairs.
22
Yeah, Deb, repairs to some overhead wiring, which has forced crews into early morning replacements and they are still working on fixing the train line.
23
So this morning we saw trains stopped between Hornsby and North Sydney
24
and those commuters were encouraged to get on buses to replace those trains.
25
The problem being there was long waits for those buses
26
and then when they arrived here to Chatswood to get on the metro, there was also a very long wait time.
27
We've spoken to a lot of those commuters this morning who were trying to get into the city for work
28
and for other reasons, appointments as well.
29
Take a listen to how they summed up that frustration.
30
Slowed you down a bit?
31
Yeah, quite a bit, by 30 minutes, 40 minutes, yeah.
32
Yeah, I'm a bit late.
33
I'm a casual worker, so I have to tell my boss, hey, I'm an hour late, like, that's money.
34
I mean, I saw the queue and it was, like, wrapped around.
35
I'd never seen it like that or a queue at the Lundgren station.
36
And I don't know, really annoying.
37
I'll be a little bit late, but it should be okay.
38
Hopefully.
39
This is the second time in just 11 days that we've seen that overhead wiring fail that has caused this commuter chaos.
40
We're expecting Transport NSW to provide some answers later today, Deb, and we'll bring you that in our bulletins at 4 and 6 p.m.
41
Gus, for the latest, thank you.
42
Let's go to breaking news in Port Adelaide, where there are also commuter delays this morning after a bus crashed into a railway bridge.
43
Let's go live to Keziah Sullivan, who is at the scene for us.
44
Keziah, what caused this accident?
45
Well, Deb, that is something that authorities will try to get to the bottom of now.
46
I'm just going to get my cameraman to zoom in for you and show you the impact of this bus, which crashed into the bridge here.
47
As you can see, it is a concrete bridge there
48
and the impact has been quite severe on the driver's side of this bus.
49
Now, when we arrived here this morning, it was a very chaotic scene.
50
There was paramedics everywhere.
51
There was firefighters everywhere.
52
And their priority was the passengers and the bus driver.
53
There were several people who were on board.
54
They were treated here at the scene and then put on stretchers and into ambulances.
55
But the biggest concern was for the driver.
56
He was trapped inside and emergency services worked to try and free him for over an hour.
57
They had to deal with stabilising the bus and making sure that he was safe as well.
58
But eventually they managed to get him out safely and he was taken to hospital with very serious injuries.
59
Now this all unfolded at around 8.30 this morning.
60
It was the busy peak of the morning rush.
61
So there was a lot of witnesses here who saw this all unfold.
62
We've spoken to a couple of them who said they just heard this really loud bang
63
and several of them have had to be treated by paramedics as well because of the shock of all this unfolding.
64
Now, Deb, I can also tell you that there is a train line that runs above this bridge, so train services have been impacted here in Adelaide as well.
65
But as you can see behind me now, there is a number of emergency services still on scene here
66
and they're just trying to get to the bottom of exactly what has happened here.
67
Yeah, very dramatic, Keziah.
68
Thank you.
69
Pressure is mounting on the major parties to take action on migration, with new polling showing voters switching to One Nation are primarily driven by concerns over immigration.
70
Federal politics reporter Amanda Kopp joins us now with more on this.
71
Amanda, what are the numbers actually showing?
72
Good morning, Deb.
73
Well, the numbers are out in the nine papers, the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age today.
74
They reveal the main reason why people are changing their allegiance to One Nation.
75
Overwhelmingly, that reason is migration.
76
For some time, politicians have pointed to rising costs
77
and people feeling poorer as one of the main reasons that people might start voting for parties with slightly more extreme views.
78
But according to this survey, price rises only came in at number two.
79
The survey spoke to 1,000 people and showed
80
that more than 90% of One Nation voters think that Australia is going in the wrong direction.
81
and that primarily comes down to migration.
82
It comes as both major parties are under pressure to do more to cut those migration numbers.
83
We're making sure as well that we get the right skills mix
84
but also that we deal with the issue of ensuring that people who aren't entitled to be here leave.
85
We have thousands and thousands of jobs around the country
86
that aren't being filled right now and we need to make sure we're doing that and that's what immigration does.
87
The real mistake we've seen in recent years is to allow
88
the immigration numbers to get way above what we can cope with as a country.
89
And the single most important indicator of that is how many houses we've got.
90
Now, Deb, the Prime Minister is in Western Australia today meeting with his cabinet this morning.
91
But any conclusions on their own migration policies won't be finalised today, which means that we'll be waiting a little bit longer for any details on that.
92
What will be discussed though, data centres and AI, the hot topic today around how it will impact our energy grid.
93
Cabinet's position will be taken to National Cabinet when state and territory leaders meet tomorrow.
94
Deb.
95
Amanda with the latest in Canberra.
96
A man is fighting for life after confronting an armed gang that stormed his home in Brisbane's bayside overnight.
97
Pat Heaney has more.
98
Police arrived within minutes of this incident this morning, but even by then they were too late to catch this
99
group allegedly armed with knives as they ran away from the scene.
100
It was around 1.30 neighbours have told us they heard violent
101
bangs as someone kicked down the front door of this residence before shouts
102
and screams as the intruders allegedly stabbed the man at home, 46-year-old Corey Canadi, several times before they then left and took off down the street.
103
Neighbours say they spotted torchlights waving through their front yards as that group left, with ambulances arriving shortly afterwards to attend to the wounded man.
104
He was taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital in a critical but stable condition with some very serious injuries to his arm, we're told, though he is expected to survive this incident.
105
I heard them coming out and they come with voices screaming and carrying it.
106
Then they come out, they come out, and then they come jumping all over that car and ran down the street laughing.
107
Police are still working to determine if this attack was targeted, but they are still asking for public assistance in this investigation.
108
Back now with breaking news.
109
Corrective Services staff across New South Wales have just walked off the job.
110
It comes after revelations a prison inmate at the John Maroney Correctional Complex near Windsor, who allegedly bashed a corrections officer, was released on bail.
111
Prison guards protesting the outcome taking the strike action this morning
112
and we'll keep you updated on the story as we get further information.
113
The Federal Government is now considering a new funding package in the fight against bird flu.
114
Bianca Wiley is in Adelaide with more.
115
Bianca, this comes after another seal is suspected to have died from the virus.
116
That's right, Deb.
117
Good morning to you.
118
Yesterday, the South Australian Department of Primary Industries and Regions reported the suspected case, which had been found at the Pages Conservation Park near Kangaroo Island.
119
The federal government has been under pressure to act and accused of lagging behind in vaccinating key bird species.
120
The government's own risk assessment, even finding
121
that almost a fifth of Australian native species are at a high to extreme risk from the highly contagious deadly H5N1 strain.
122
These reports are coming from The Australian, which say a funding package could be on the way, and if it comes through,
123
it could help protect key species and give them a better chance of survival, such as tackling threats and also damage to their habitats.
124
But Deb, so far there have been 309 confirmed cases nationwide.
125
All right, Bianca, thank you.
