1
Hey!
2
Eric here with 30Bit40 Design Workshop.
3
I'm just getting back from a family trip to London and the UK and it's such an amazing place.
4
I absolutely love it there.
5
Travel always rejuvenates me and now that I'm back I'm reminded that I need to schedule my next trip.
6
I always like to have one kind of waiting in the wings.
7
Schedule some time away from the studio for yourself.
8
It's really important.
9
It doesn't have to be to a far away or exotic location either.
10
Just somewhere different.
11
Somewhere to break old habits and stimulate new thoughts.
12
Anyhow, this week is a quick video.
13
I've got lots cooking in the studio and a bunch of things to catch up on.
14
So today I'm sharing a few of my favorite resources I think every architect
15
or aspiring architect needs and everything on the list is under $20 US.
16
So while you're out holiday shopping you won't feel too guilty about throwing a few things in your cart for yourself too.
17
Now I just picked up these Copic or Copic markers.
18
I've been eyeing them for a while and I'm so happy I picked them up.
19
I think they're just brilliant.
20
Now Copics come in a few different styles.
21
This one is the Sketch and although it doesn't have the largest ink reservoir, the Sketch series has the best selection of color options.
22
Their elliptical shape feels really comfy in the hand
23
and it keeps it from rolling off the studio desk the
24
marker has two tips a chisel for filling large areas
25
and a brush for detail
26
and blending work i really like the brush side these are professional grade
27
and alcohol based which makes them great for blending shade
28
and shadow you can buy them individually for between five
29
and eight dollars us
30
or they also offer these three packs called blending trios for about 15 to 18 us
31
so although they're more expensive than the water -based markers they are refillable and the tips are also replaceable.
32
I'd recommend starting with a couple of grays, say warm or cool, say the C3, C6, or C8, and then complement it with a yellow or a green.
33
I picked up a few of the blending trios, the number one, which has greens, the number five, which has yellows, and the blue trio, which is number six.
34
I thought the greens would handle the landscape stuff, the yellows for lighting and sun, and the blues for sky, water, and glazing.
35
Now, if I had to choose just one set, I'd probably choose the yellows, and then I'd supplement with a few cool grays.
36
Now sketchbooks are really precious to me
37
and I think they make one of the best gifts you can give an architect or aspiring architect student.
38
It's like freshly tilled soil ready for planting ready for fresh ideas.
39
As an architect I've used literally hundreds of different types of sketchbooks in my career
40
and it's taken me a long time to settle on these
41
which are made by Muji and I really hope I don't stop making these.
42
It's an A5 size and it has 70 sheets.
43
Now here's why I like them.
44
First, they're small.
45
I like thin sketchbooks because they can act almost like project records.
46
You can dedicate an entire sketchbook to one project or fill a series of them and number them.
47
Secondly, they're portable and the thinner they are, which is to say the fewer pages they contain, the easier they are for your hand to draw in.
48
Now smaller to a point, smaller format sketchbooks, one smaller than this, I find they leave no place for my hand to rest while I'm drawing.
49
These also have a tiny dot grid pattern printed on each page, which is subtle, but it helps to organize ideas and concepts without being too assertive.
50
And then lastly, the ring binding means every page lays flat.
51
There's no binding to get in the way or pages flipping back on you.
52
And this is really comfortable to use and it actually lets you use more of the page.
53
The paper color here is a little bit off white, which helps any colors you're using to pop, but white pens won't work here.
54
So if you want to use white pens, you probably want to pick up a craft paper one, which is another excellent choice, honestly.
55
And I do wish Muji made a craft version of this one.
56
I'm not sure if they do or not.
57
I just haven't seen it in the stores where I visited.
58
The paper texture here is smooth, so no tooth, which is good for creating sharp details and clean edges.
59
But that also means there'll be some bleed through if you like to use a lot of markers in your sketchbook.
60
Okay, in the sketchbook, of course, you need writing implements and how could I choose just one?
61
Honestly, the selection I carry with me changes from week to week depending on what I'm focusing on.
62
In my pencil case this week, I have a white colored pencil a pale ochre pencil a
63
carmine red color erase two pentel sign pens one black one
64
gray there are two pilot v7 precise pens a black
65
and a red a clickable eraser
66
and a 0 .9 millimeter mechanical pencil i keep the colored
67
pencils i use most often in a spare sunglasses case
68
and my go -to pens and pencils in the plastic muji pencil case
69
now six inch scales they're insanely useful They fit into your pencil case as part of your everyday carry,
70
and you can use them for quick drafting tasks as a ruler to get nice straight lines
71
or to verify dimensions on a working field set.
72
And I don't think it makes sense to spend a whole lot on these because honestly, you'll probably lose them quite often.
73
In fact, I just lost my Alvin one a couple of weeks ago, so I have this aluminum triangular shaped one here.
74
Even better than this are the flat ones, as I mentioned made by Alvin.
75
They have a slight bevel and they take up less space in the pencil case
76
and actually fit more comfortably in the hand
77
and I find them easier to pick up from the page
78
of the sketchbook as you're using them as you've probably figured
79
out by now all these implements they're the raw materials of
80
your work as an architect as a designer they're nothing without the creative fuel provided by you the connections
81
that only you can into it so this last one here loops back to where we started.
82
One of the reasons I travel is to see new places, to collect new ideas, to forge new neural connections, to try new food, meet new people, and just hear fresh stories.
83
Books?
84
Do architects need them?
85
Are they essential?
86
Yeah, of course.
87
I love them.
88
I'm surrounded by them, and they're fantastic resources, but they could never replicate the experience of actually visiting a place, of seeing art in a museum,
89
or hearing what a city sounds like
90
so one of the things i did in london
91
and this was far less than 20 in fact it was
92
free was visit the tate modern the tate modern has this wonderful building
93
and that was part of the reason of course
94
that i went there it was designed by erzog
95
and demurin fantastic building if you don't know it you should go look it up
96
but even better than
97
that was all the art contained inside of it ai wei
98
wei richard sarah gordon mattaclark the betchers some of my all -time favorite artists in that museum.
99
And it is soul nourishing.
100
So I saw things that made me see the world a little differently, made me challenge who I am as a designer, and made me think about the world around me.
101
So find the thing that's less than $20 in your neighborhood.
102
It doesn't have to be far away.
103
It doesn't have to be in London.
104
It doesn't have to be in New York.
105
It can be right in your neighborhood.
106
But you have to step outside of the studio to get there.
107
Now I hope you found this helpful.
108
Keep making things out there and please smash that like button below.
109
Be sure to subscribe if you're not already, and say hello in the comments.
110
Tell me, what has the power to pull you away from the studio?
111
We'll see you again next time.
112
Cheers my friends.
