1
The term branding people use it interchangeably with logo design, identity design, or even sometimes typography.
2
And maybe we need to set the record straight.
3
I know you're the best person to tell us what is branding Marty?
4
Yeah, so let's start with what branding isn't.
5
Okay.
6
It's because there's not a lot of things people say it is.
7
It's not a logo.
8
Okay.
9
A logo is a very useful tool for a business, but it's not the brand.
10
It's a symbol for the brand.
11
A brand is not a product when people talk about this brand buying this brand
12
or that brand they're really talking about buying one product or another product the brand is not that
13
people say the brand is a promise the company makes to customers
14
and there's some truth in
15
that yeah I mean it it does end up acting as a promise
16
but that's not what it is either advertising people like to say well it's the sum of all the impressions
17
that a company makes on an audience yeah well you know if you're trying to sell a lot of impressions,
18
I can see where that might be useful to you.
19
But from a business's point of view, why do they want that?
20
And how does that help creative people understand what they're doing?
21
So none of those things are really what branding is.
22
A brand is a result.
23
It's a customer's gut feeling about a product, a service, or a company.
24
It ends up in their heads, in their hearts.
25
They take whatever raw materials you throw at them and they make something out of it.
26
But they're making it.
27
They're creating it.
28
And so in a sense, when you create a brand, you're not creating one brand, you're creating millions of brands,
29
like however many customers or people in your audience.
30
Each one has a different brand of you.
31
So a brand is like a reputation, right?
32
So it's your business reputation.
33
And everyone's going to be a little bit different about what that reputation is.
34
And that's okay, as long as you have a you've got a corralled mostly where you want it
35
and that it's beneficial to the company so we tend to look at companies and
36
and designers tend to look at branding as from our point of view like we're this is something
37
we're doing we're telling a story where we're making a claim
38
or you know we're making a pitch and and that's what we do
39
but that's not what a brand is a brand is the result of
40
that and if you don't start there you don't know what you're doing
41
You actually don't know what you do.
42
You think you know what you're doing, but you don't.
43
So from a designer's point of view, I mean, I always tended to be this way.
44
It's like I just had a, it was my gut feeling about whether this is going to work or not.
45
And then I would sell it as hard as I could to get the client to sign off on it.
46
From the client's point of view, they're going, well, it's a checklist.
47
I got the, you know, I got the logo.
48
I got the tagline.
49
I got the ad campaign click check check
50
and they think they're done right none of that's right
51
you know what's right is what happens in people's heads like what have we achieved like what's the reputation
52
that we've created through uh the products we're putting out like
53
and the design of the products the messaging we're putting out the look
54
and feel of them uh our culture you know how does
55
that affect people how our how our employees behave you know how is that affecting our reputation, all that stuff counts.
56
So it's a big world.
57
And it actually takes in almost all business.
58
Not so much finance, but finance is involved too, because finance has to green light all these things.
59
But almost everybody in a company is affecting the brand, doing something with the brand, doing it for the brand or hurting the brand.
60
So you got to think of it that way.
61
I didn't want to say one word because that was perfect.
62
This is unscripted.
63
Marty's just talking from decades of experience and writing and articulating this.
