1
If you want to upgrade how you use a notebook, there are four essential hacks that I recommend.
2
Because in the age of doom scrolling and overwhelming AI slop, more and more of us want to use notebooks to effectively turn away from digital technology,
3
declutter our minds, and organize our lives.
4
And I've spent the last decade trying out notebooks and refining journaling techniques to do just that.
5
Hi, I'm Ryder Carroll, creator of The Bullet Journal Method.
6
I've taught over a million people how to use a journal to write a better life.
7
Each of the four hacks I'm about to share will be helpful regardless of whether
8
or not you are following the bullet journal method.
9
All you need is a desire to get the most out of your notebook.
10
Let's dive in.
11
There's a saying that goes that the best camera is the one that you have on you.
12
The same is true for notebooks.
13
No matter how much money you spend on a notebook, it won't matter if you don't take it with you.
14
Most people make this choice based on what they see on the shelf or what they see online, but I think that that decision needs to start sooner.
15
Rather than trying to fit your life into a notebook, you want your notebook that fits into your life.
16
So start by thinking about how you move through your life.
17
Do you commute or travel often?
18
Do you have a dedicated work desk or do you share it with others?
19
Do you carry a large
20
or a small bag are you sensitive to weight the trick is to find a notebook
21
that will cause the least amount of resistance in your life
22
if the notebook just fits into your bag
23
or is just a little bit too small to write with
24
that is resistance that discomfort over time becomes more
25
and more pronounced in the split second decision of whether
26
or not to take your notebook over time the answer will
27
be no more often making it less useful the first real notebook hack is finding a notebook
28
that you'll say yes to over and over again no matter where you go.
29
Then the two most popular sizes are the A5, which is my daily driver, or when I'm traveling I take the A6, a pocket notebook size.
30
I'll link both down below.
31
Now the second hack applies to hardcovers.
32
This hack also works for any hardcover book, not just journals.
33
Part of the beauty of using a hardcover book is how robust they are
34
and a lot of that robustness comes not only from the cover
35
but the spine that holds it all together oftentimes
36
when people get a new notebook though they can be inclined to do this
37
open it up down the center and that can crack the spine
38
which over time will weaken the entire notebook instead we want to ease flexibility into the spine the way
39
that you can do this is by By setting the book spine down on the table, then you take a few pages from the left -hand side like this and smooth them down.
40
Then you can do the same on the right.
41
And then you keep doing this until you eventually get into the center of the notebook.
42
And that will ease flexibility both into the spine as well as let your notebook sit flat.
43
So one of the most challenging things for people coming to notebooks from the digital space is that they don't have searchability.
44
Adding an index and a page number can go a surprisingly long way to fixing that issue.
45
The index is an address book for your notes and ideas.
46
It combines the best of a table of contents, a bibliography, and a traditional index into one simple layout.
47
All you to do to set up an index in your
48
own notebook is at the beginning reserve a couple of pages then
49
when you write down an idea about a given topic give
50
that page a topic
51
and a page number then add both back to your index now the really cool thing is
52
that this allows you to avoid having to hoard pages about
53
any given topic rather than trying to guess how many pages a given topic needs with the index in place, you can do something differently.
54
Anytime that you want to write more notes about a given topic and you don't have any space on that page, just flip to your next blank page,
55
give that the same topic, write as much as you want, and then add those page numbers next to the original entry in your index.
56
Simple.
57
I think
58
that one of the most underrated hacks for a journaling practice of any kind is keeping it as simple as possible, to keep it sustainable.
59
One of the easiest ways I found to do this is by keeping my entries themselves as short as possible, ideally to single sentence journal entries.
60
That ensures that I'll keep adding entries over time in the long run.
61
This is core in the bullet journal method
62
but i think it can apply to any journaling practice to
63
take it to the next level try pairing those single sentence entries with symbols
64
that will help you quickly recognize what kind of entry it
65
is later on this will help you differentiate between let's say your your tasks, your thoughts
66
or your feelings or whatever else is important to you for you to track when you're scanning your pages later.
67
Now to keep all this straight, you'll also want to add a key, a place where you can map out what those symbols actually mean.
68
Trust me, this is important because it's very easy to forget in the long run what which symbol meant.
69
So keep the amount of symbols to a minimum as well
70
as be sure to have a key where you map out those symbols.
71
So those are the four hacks that I believe make using a notebook much easier and sustainable over time.
72
I actually believe in this stuff so much that I bake these into the notebook that I spent years designing.
73
There's a reason why these features are inside the official bullet journal notebook.
74
Now, I don't think you need to bullet journal take advantage of these features, but if you do bullet journal, it makes that even so much easier.
75
You will have the index, you have a key for all of your notes
76
and different bullet types you also have page numbers you have bookmarks
77
and a whole bunch of other stuff it strikes
78
that perfect Goldilocks zone of structure and freedom
79
that I think is really important
80
when you are trying to establish a sustainable notebook habit anyway
81
if that's interesting check it out in the description below
82
and for more details on how exactly I'm using my notebook this year including every change
83
that I've made to the bullet journal method, check out this video next.
84
Thank you for taking the time and happy bullet journaling.
