1
Hello ladies and gentlemen.
2
This is Elliot from ETJEnglish.com.
3
Yes, it's been a while.
4
I've not recorded a video in a while.
5
And the reason why is because I've been having a streak of bad luck.
6
Now, this is an idiom.
7
And what it means is when we're having a succession,
8
you know, a continuous trend of bad things, happening.
9
We're not having much luck.
10
Therefore we're having a streak of bad luck.
11
Now I'll explain this to you now in the video after I've apologized
12
because I'm sorry for not recording any videos recently but you'll see why now and you'll understand.
13
We're moving out of our house at the moment
14
so as you can tell the bookcase is gone
15
and we are basically selling all of our stuff because we're moving out we're moving to Thailand in two weeks time.
16
So yes we're getting rid of all of our stuff and
17
while I was clearing out
18
and getting rid of the stuff in the kitchen I was
19
stacking the plates you know piling the plates up on top of each other stacking them
20
and during this I somehow managed to drop a plate big plate big big plate.
21
I somehow managed to drop it on my bare foot.
22
Now I won't go into detail but I ended up with a big hole in my foot,
23
a lot of blood all over the kitchen floor and it wouldn't stop bleeding so I wasn't really very happy about this.
24
So that's number one in the streak of bad luck.
25
After this, I was upstairs in my bedroom cleaning up the wound, bandaging my foot up, you know,
26
getting rid of the blood.
27
And unfortunately, my girlfriend ran up the stairs.
28
She wanted to check if I was okay she'd recently come home
29
and she noticed that there was blood on the carpet
30
so she obviously realized something bad had happened
31
so my girlfriend ran up the stairs to check
32
if I was okay unfortunately I left my glasses on the floor and my girlfriend stood on them.
33
So not only now did I have a bleeding hole in my foot, I also had a broken pair of glasses and I couldn't see.
34
Since then my luck really hasn't improved.
35
I've knocked over a mug of coffee all over our white carpet so there's a nice stain there for
36
anyone who wants to move into our house and I'm also sick now.
37
So I've been having a streak of bad luck and because of what happened to my foot, I can't, I couldn't really walk.
38
So for the past two weeks I've been sat down a lot
39
and I can't really move I can't really record videos
40
so this is why I've been away for a
41
while I've just been doing lessons with my students haven't really
42
had the the capability to record YouTube videos regardless of all that I'm back I'm able to walk now,
43
I can walk, and I am absolutely fine.
44
You've learned from this video, number one, that I'm a very unlucky person and I've been having a streak of bad luck.
45
And that is an idiom.
46
But I also want you to learn that the opposite of this idiom, which is having a lucky streak.
47
Now a lucky streak is when a lot of good things happen to you in a succession.
48
So this is the opposite of having an unlucky streak.
49
Please give me a thumbs up if you enjoyed the video.

比如“a streak of bad luck”中,“streak of”连读为/strɪk əv/;“I've not recorded”里,“not”弱读为/nət/。此外,“stacking the plates”中的“stacking”尾音/k/与“the”连读,形成流畅的语流。

视频中说话人在讲述厄运时,会在关键信息处加重语气,比如“big hole in my foot”“broken pair of glasses”,这些重音突出了事件的严重性。同时,句子之间的停顿也很有规律,比如在“so I wasn't really very happy about this”前稍作停顿,体现思考过程。
