6
A reading from the first letter of Peter.
7
Beloved, like newborn infants, long for the pure,
8
spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow into salvation,
9
if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.
10
Come to him, a living stone,
11
though rejected by mortals yet chosen and precious in God's sight,
12
and like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house,
13
to be a holy priesthood,
14
to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
15
But you are a chosen race,
16
a royal priesthood, a holy nation,
17
God's own people, in order
18
that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
19
Once you were not a people,
20
but now you are God's people,
21
once you had not received mercy,
22
but now you have received mercy.
23
Beloved, I urge you as aliens and exiles to abstain from the desires of the flesh that wage war against the soul.
24
Conduct yourselves honorably among the so that,
25
though they malign you as evildoers,
26
they may see your honorable deeds and glorify God when he comes to judge.

41
Come with joy into the presence of the Lord.
42
I am the light of the world,
43
says the Lord, whoever follows me will have the light of life.
44
A reading from the Holy Gospel, according to Mark.
45
As Jesus was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a large crowd,
46
Bartimaeus son of Timaeus, a blind beggar,
47
was sitting by the roadside.
48
When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth,
49
he began to shout out and say,
50
Jesus, son of David, have mercy on me.
51
Many sternly ordered him to be quiet,
52
but he cried out even more loudly,
53
Son of David, have mercy on me.
54
Jesus stood still and said, Call him here.
55
And they called the blind man,
56
saying to him, Take heart,
57
get up, he is calling you.
58
So throwing off his cloak,
59
he sprang up and came to Jesus.
60
Then Jesus said to him,
61
What do you want me to do for you?
62
The blind man said to him,
63
My teacher, let me see again.
64
Jesus said to him, Go,
65
your faith has made you well.
66
Immediately he regained his sight and followed him on the way.
67
The Gospel of the Lord Gospel Reflection Though the Torah commanded kindness and justice toward the blind,
68
they were often treated poorly by the wider community.
69
Unable to work or provide for themselves,
70
the blind were typically reduced to begging.
71
They also bore the stigma of being seen as suffering God's judgment,
72
whether for their own sins or the sins of their parents.
73
While today's story about Bartimaeus vividly illustrates the pitiful social and economic position of the blind at that time,
74
it even more powerfully presents him as an ideal model to imitate.
75
First, we should humbly see ourselves in Bartimaeus.
76
On a spiritual level, we are all blind and in need of God's mercy.
77
Like Bartimaeus, we must identify as people who are poor,
78
ostracized, and incapable of seeing all that God wants to reveal to us.
79
Pride gives us a false sense of who we are and blinds us to the truth of our spiritual poverty.
80
Humility, on the other hand,
81
opens the eyes of faith,
82
enabling us to recognize our need for God's mercy
83
and his healing grace so that we may see and understand life as he wishes to reveal it.
84
Bartimaeus is not only a model of the humility we need,
85
he is also a model of faith and prayer.
86
In his humility, as soon as he heard that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by,
87
he cried out in a twofold way.
88
First, he called Jesus the Son of David.
89
This was a profession of faith in Jesus as the Messiah.
90
Son of David was a messianic title rooted in Nathan's prophecy,
91
in which God promised King David that his descendant would establish an everlasting kingdom, cf.
92
2 Samuel 7 verses 12 to 16.
93
By calling Jesus the Son of David,
94
Bartimaeus professed his belief that Jesus was the fulfillment of that prophecy.
95
With his profession of faith,
96
Bartimaeus also prayed the ideal prayer, Have pity on me.
97
The word pity is a translation of the Greek eleison,
98
which is also rendered as, have mercy.
99
For example, at Mass, we pray in Greek,
100
Kyrie Eleison, or, Lord, have mercy.
101
This prayer is ideal because every gift from God is an act of mercy.
102
We do not earn or deserve his grace,
103
it is a freely bestowed gift,
104
and our prayer should reflect this profound truth.
105
As Bartimaeus prayed, many people told him to be silent.
106
Despite their rebukes, Bartimaeus intensified his prayer,
107
calling out all the more.
108
This persistence serves as another model for the ideals of prayer.
109
The many who rebuked him and tried to silence him symbolize the numerous obstacles we face in our pursuit of God's mercy.
110
Though the greatest obstacles we face are our own sins,
111
which discourage us from approaching God in prayer,
112
we also encounter challenges in the form of temptations.
113
These temptations, like the many who sought to silence Bartimaeus,
114
try to lead us away from prayer.
115
They urge us to give up,
116
doubt God's care for us,
117
or remain complacent in our spiritual lives.
118
Bartimaeus' response, to pray even louder and more fervently,
119
teaches us the importance of perseverance in prayer,
120
even in the face of discouragement or opposition.
121
today on this poor blind man,
122
Bartimaeus, sitting on the roadside.
123
With him, profess your faith in Jesus as the Messiah and cry out for mercy.
124
When sin hinders you, have the courage to admit it,
125
confess it, and plead for forgiveness.
126
When temptations try to silence you,
127
resist them and cry out all the louder.
128
In the end, Jesus called Bartimaeus to himself and healed him.
129
Jesus desires to do the same for us.
130
He will, if we humbly identify with Bartimaeus,
131
see ourselves in his condition,
132
and imitate his unwavering faith and persistent prayer.
133
Let us pray.
134
Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me.
135
With Bartimaeus, I profess my belief in you as the Messiah,
136
the Savior of the world.
137
With him, I also plead for your mercy in my life and in the world around me.
138
You alone are the source of all grace and mercy,
139
and though I am unworthy,
140
you freely bestow it upon the humble.
141
Lord, I want to see.
142
Open the eyes of my heart and grant me the reward of your mercy.
143
Jesus, I trust in you.
144
Amen.
145
Thank you for watching.
