1
So for today's webinar, we are going to work on another consumer product.
2
We're on a roll here with the consumer product, so why not just continue on with the applications?
3
So today's application is very simplistic, but what I am going to do is focus on some of the selection tools.
4
So we'll cover those and how to go about doing it.
5
so we're going to take these skills with design x to
6
make lives better as you can see here with this screenshot um
7
and use them to make consumer products manufacturing consumer products better
8
so we'll go over a little bit about how to use the selection tools
9
and scan processing tools to get to where we can auto surface this command here on this jacuzzi
10
so with that we'll go ahead
11
and jump over to the next slide talking about design x and the workflow and then we'll dive in
12
the software today i know every week we go over this slide
13
so i will definitely try to make it brief here
14
but for anyone that's just joining us that hasn't been on one of the re lab webinars
15
this slide really just summarizes the workflow for designx and designx was invented to take
16
scan data from a variety of different sources as you can
17
see here handhelds arms structured light long -range scanners all these different types handle the heavy lifting of
18
that type of information which doesn't play well inside of CAD environments.
19
So we built a platform from the ground up that can take
20
that information alongside of the CAD tools in one platform to
21
extract CAD information to then send out the data wherever you want to go, whatever your favorite manufacturing technique is,
22
whatever one that pertains to what you're trying to do.
23
So that's the overall workflow workflow for design x
24
and now let's jump over into our presentation
25
so for today's webinar we'll go ahead and take this we'll follow the format of processing this into a single scan
26
so here we have individual scans here and we are going to process it into a single scan
27
then auto surface it and then from there i also have some
28
selection tool things
29
that i would like to cover just breaking down some of those tools as we go along the way
30
so that's the format for today's is
31
that we're not going to roll back we're going to do this live
32
so as you can see i have individual scans over here
33
on the left hand side The first thing we're going to do is come over to alignment between scan data,
34
global fine, and go ahead and apply only a small transform.
35
Use only the reliable data, and we will do the best fit on that.
36
And you'll see that it will tighten up the alignment there a little bit it.
37
So now that we have them aligned to each other, as you can see, they look pretty good there.
38
We will go ahead and do a merge.
39
So we'll come over to polygons, merge, and let's try HD mesh.
40
I'm just going to try HD mesh first on this one, just to see how it goes.
41
since we're doing it live go ahead and run it and see where we where we stand with this
42
all right so we finished we'll go ahead
43
and uh we can actually just take those scans
44
and say move to new group and turn those off and yeah we got a pretty good pretty good merge there.
45
Let's go ahead and double check.
46
So right now we have it at 10 million triangles.
47
We really don't need 10 million triangles for this, so I'm going to drop it down.
48
Drop it down to like 1 .5. and run the decimate.
49
Remember the decimate command, we updated it in recent versions, so it's pretty fast now.
50
So now you see that we decimated it down.
51
And typically I also will sometimes run what we call a global remesh here.
52
So run global remesh to just kind of remesh and smooth it out a little bit as we go.
53
so there we go that looks beautiful now
54
alright so some of the things I wanted to talk about are some of the selection tools
55
and we'll go ahead and delete
56
that group there since we no longer need it on hand
57
and we can always go ahead
58
and save it will just say jacuzzi mold 02 this is just good housekeeping go ahead
59
and save this since we got rid of all that
60
so you have your selection tools up here right
61
so you have a line selector one thing that's nice about
62
line selector by the way is you know i can use it chop areas off
63
but sometimes if I want to chop this area here you see here
64
that it has a certain thickness to it well I can hold alt
65
and click and drag a wider line and I can come
66
and draw a wider line there if I hold alt
67
so there's one little tip here like let's say I'm disconnecting this
68
and I just come down
69
and use this line tool now i mean there's other ways of doing this
70
but what i'm doing is showing you sometimes
71
when you use certain tools there are just some really neat clutch uh aspects to a certain tool
72
that is just comes in really handy
73
so really what i'm saying there with the line tool is it just really handy for
74
if i'm just trying to disconnect something i might come
75
and do something along those lines like
76
that where i just use the line tool and again you can hold this alt
77
and change the thickness of it and you could just come down there like that
78
and use the line tool
79
so that's handy rectangle that's the default everybody kind of knows right um circle rarely use it
80
but kind of nice i guess you know in the right
81
instance um polygon i i use polygon a lot like i
82
all i was just talking about using the line right
83
so polygon i can just do something like this and select long straight areas
84
really handy there
85
and of course everybody loves everybody loves the lasso that's what
86
a lot of people end up using the majority of the time besides rectangle obviously
87
and you'll notice the one of the most popular techniques to
88
um using lasso is using the straight side of the lasso right
89
so if i just click there come over here and come over here and snap a straight line
90
um so using the straight line of the lasso is really handy there now custom region
91
we've covered this i believe in here before
92
but custom region is really neat it's like i'm going to
93
draw the borders of the country here i'm going to draw the borders all the way around
94
and then it will select everything inside of it
95
and it will have this preview until you hit okay
96
and select and then this is when combined with d feature is really handy right
97
because then you can just come in and hit d feature
98
and it will d feature an area
99
so this custom region tool it's really helpful for just sometimes
100
there's an area like there's twisted triangles inside of it
101
and you're not sure where those triangles go so
102
if you just come over to custom region
103
and you go around it double click for the last accept it and then d feature
104
so the custom and then when it's done you'll notice
105
that it toggles back to whatever else you were using first
106
and of course the paintbrush is actually nice as well too
107
so paintbrush is just really handy sometimes for stuff like this you just come in
108
and you paint it you hold alt to change the size as well
109
and then you can come into something like a d feature
110
and d feature an area i also like paintbrush almost like
111
you use it inside of like adobe products where i will just touch touch touch touch if you're doing photo cleanup
112
and find uh deleting artifacts so then i come over to d feature
113
and you'll notice there that d feature will work on multiple areas at once
114
so i almost use the paintbrush a lot like i do Um, again, like if you're using Lightroom or Photoshop,
115
you can, uh, just touch a bunch of different defects at all at the same time.
116
And of course, paint bucket, amazing.
117
I select the main object, uh, inverse, delete.
118
So now I only have one shell on screen, one polygon object here.
119
And that is, that is one of the best out there.
120
Extend to similar.
121
extended similar will just try to select large low curvature areas i use this a lot for creating regions right
122
so i'll use that but this is very close to these other two
123
and i'll say that i i honestly just jumped to uh the final smart selector um
124
and it select um the second one here select by angle built into the software there is an angle
125
if you go into the preferences
126
so if you come over to file uh preferences
127
and then scroll down here crease angle degree
128
and you can set it's set for three millimeters right now
129
so because that is set already at three degrees i tend to not use
130
that one as much i tend to come over to the smart selector where i click
131
and drag up and what that is ultimately doing when i do
132
that is um adjusting that value right on the fly
133
and then i can hit insert and create a region
134
that way so i tend to use this one the majority of the time
135
that is really just the best one honestly especially
136
if the performance as well like
137
if this is a not a massive uh triangle count then this responds really well you see how fast
138
that is to flood out and
139
if ever you have interior triangles like this what you can
140
do is you can hit insert switch over to rectangle selector click on it you can enlarge it
141
and then shrink it and that will kind of like flood in the interior triangles
142
that are not selected so the same thing goes up here
143
if i click this if i click on the region
144
and i say enlarge and you'll see it fills in
145
and then shrink right back to it just basically does a row of triangles at a time
146
and it will it will automatically clear out those islands that's like one way of doing it
147
is creating that sort of method there so these are the default selection tools
148
but how many of you know there are more selection tools why not more
149
so custom region you see here in here you have um all kinds of different options here
150
but if we come over to mode
151
and you see the ones that we already talked about
152
and then you see some lesser used ones now this is
153
just helpful maybe this is something you want to do maybe this is pointless here
154
but you have box selection mode
155
so box selection i'm just going to align to this view ish there we go
156
and then if i click and then drag like so there i created a selection
157
so it's like a volume selecting mode here and it stays in here by the way so i'm going to
158
click and get out of it and let's go back in here
159
so we'll come back over to select mode box let's get out of it let's just go to this one
160
and then toggle back over to it select mode box Yeah,
161
it's a real fun one.
162
Honestly, I would prefer if it just exited when you're done.
163
Right?
164
So let's go over here to mode again.
165
Cylinder.
166
So I'm going to make a circle.
167
Then I'm going to click where I want it to start and click where I want it to end.
168
So we'll do that again.
169
one more time there we go circle
170
selector cylinder sorry not circles sphere
171
if that's not good enough for you let's do this it's fear is interesting
172
because you can like drag it around there
173
and select the sphere I I would imagine on this data set everybody's like why are you doing this
174
but i think if you have like a really elaborate scan it's got lots of internal geometry
175
and all kinds of crazy stuff
176
that this might end up being handy to select stuff
177
and you see it stays in there by the way unless you hit escape to get out of it
178
so that's what i just did if i come over to mode there it is
179
so those are some of those selection tools now
180
inside of the select you have another often overlooked area by criteria
181
so this criteria tool is interesting you can say I want
182
to select the max edge length smaller than one millimeter let's just do
183
that and we'll hide the regions
184
so select by criteria let's
185
come over to polygons just toggle this off to select
186
There we go. By criteria.
187
Larger than.
188
I honestly use that for long -range data, by the way.
189
If I just say I want to select larger than one millimeter.
190
So it's like, oh, all of it is larger than one millimeter, right?
191
Right now.
192
um and i could mess fiddle with it
193
and try to find out like where it's at
194
if i hit this look it's gonna give me like a general 30 um
195
so let's just change it to 29 i think it should still
196
okay didn't now if we come over to select by criteria you see here that we have other things
197
area smaller than what that's really useful for a lot of times honestly is
198
if I have disconnected you know I use the flood fill
199
and inverse but sometimes it's really handy if I have just use the line there select
200
criteria area smaller than 50.
201
Okay.
202
Larger than you see max midge edge length ratio larger than angle deviation from the plane
203
um so if you have a plane you could say i want to select from angle deviation from that plane
204
crease angle is larger than
205
let's go that's with that there
206
so all of those criteria just to give you a rundown
207
of that's select by criteria you it's just really handy there
208
and those are options that you have so I just wanted to make people aware that those are available for you
209
and they're really helpful if you have an instance where you're just trying to figure something out
210
now i'll go ahead and fill that hole and then let's go ahead
211
and save this because i wanted to show the exterior faces option as well
212
because you do have an option here to say
213
select exterior faces and it will go around and select everything that's on the outside
214
So let's go ahead and save this real quick.
215
And we'll come back to it in a second because this one doesn't really have, as you can see, it's a zero thickness surface.
216
It doesn't have an option.
217
You know, it's not a good model for saying I want to select exterior surfaces.
218
But if I come over and I just drop in a scan here that I have handy, we can do that as well here.
219
So just a second.
220
So here we have a hand.
221
And if I come over to view clip,
222
you see here it's like a shelled hand now honestly for
223
this specific model all you would have to do is go back to one of our other selection tools
224
that we have and select the interior that's kind of freaky
225
and select that and just hit delete
226
but I'm just gonna use this as an example to show the exterior tool
227
so we'll just come over to view we'll just turn it back off here
228
and come over to select just because I'm trying to use what we got here
229
and select the exterior now now if I have that select exterior
230
and I just hit cut and paste it as a new piece
231
so there is the interior offset that again kind of creepy
232
and then there's the exterior so
233
that whole select exterior faces is just awesome it's just really handy
234
so we'll go ahead and jump back to our other model so if i just drag that back in
235
now we have this this model and we'll just kind of use some techniques
236
that we were talking about before sometimes
237
if i want to disconnect this outer wall you know some people do it this way they'll come through
238
and they'll just kind of draw with selection tools like that
239
or you can change the size of it here too and kind of paint that way
240
another method is like we were talking about with the line tool and disconnect it that way holding shift.
241
Another method is using the lasso.
242
Not custom region.
243
I accidentally did that.
244
That's a very common thing that some people do.
245
Right?
246
So I can come in that way.
247
Disconnect it that way.
248
i think a lot of people would like to use that method
249
using the polygon selector tool we got one more area to disconnect it
250
so i'll just stick with polygon here on this one
251
and then double click there and then you see here
252
that we have that external area disconnected
253
so we'll just switch back to rectangle you know flood never mind inverse delete
254
and before we do anything else just run um healing wizard on it
255
and you see there that we just run healing wizard just to fix any areas that may have issues
256
you could always you know if this is still a little bit too
257
rough you know you can come over and and run like something along the lines of enhance shape
258
you know computer enhance you know you just tell it computer enhance and it will do it
259
optimize mesh these are some of the different possibilities you can run
260
so you see that did pretty good turn the regions off
261
And and we're not focused on this today more what I wanted to focus on out of the selection tools
262
So from here also, this is bothering me
263
So let's just come over here and use the smart brush one more time here and enhance Enhance enhance and accept that
264
Now we will come over to the most exciting part where we auto surface and
265
and let it run oh
266
so it's telling us to run the healing wizard one last time
267
because i made changes to it and probably caused a few little tweaks there
268
so now i have that i can come over to exact surfacing hit okay and we now will auto surface
269
so there is our auto surface
270
turn the mesh off and we can just come over
271
and export that as a step file i just sat any of those neutral formats
272
and again today's was more about talking about the selection tools
273
and mesh processing and things like that
274
because we do focus a lot on the modeling techniques
275
but sometimes we want to make sure we focus on the the mesh tools as well
276
so with that hopefully that was valuable for everybody we'll jump back over to our powerpoint
277
i hope everyone has been enjoying the re lab webinar
278
and i'm always striving to make it better and gather input from a variety of sources.
279
And I had the idea to create a survey and put out a survey just asking for feedback.
280
Mainly the feedback is just to gather data points on the topics,
281
the applications, and if there are any other ideas of applications
282
that people might like us to focus on
283
and just kind of get the pulse of what you guys like to see what you like to hear
284
so this is a very open form it asks for some feedback
285
and suggestions and we'll go through those and implement those so
286
if you have any proposed topics or things
287
that you might want to learn about designx then go ahead
288
and scan this qr code it takes you straight to a form and we will take that and implement it.
