1
Hi folks, a lot of people out there, probably yourself included, if you're homeowners you deal with potentially what you call water pressure problems
2
and people don't understand that it's probably actually a water volume problem.
3
It's not a pressure problem and I'm going to demonstrate that for you in very simple terms.
4
I'm not a scientist.
5
I'm not going to get in any kind of technical jargon that you might not understand and I probably wouldn't understand.
6
So we have pressure gauges on two different lines here.
7
One's on an inch and a half line.
8
It's showing about 30-35 pounds of pressure and this is on a three-quarter line.
9
You know there might be a small kink in one of the lines.
10
It should be identical.
11
This is showing 40 pounds of pressure, but they're being fed by the same exact source.
12
So the pressure is the same, but the volume is vastly different.
13
So I'm going to give you a quick example, probably the only technical ease I'm going to get into.
14
If you have a one inch water service line in your home,
15
it's measured by how many gallons per minute it can provide, which is eight gallons per minute, which is barely enough for a one-family home,
16
according to New York City sizing tables.
17
An inch-and-a-quarter line, which is larger, inch and a quarter, one inch, maybe cost $150 difference if you completely change your water line,
18
gives you 75% more water, gives you 14 gallons per minute for about $150.
19
Now I'm going to get in, that might be the last technical thing I'm going to show you.
20
So, 40 pounds of pressure.
21
Okay.
22
Now, because it's interesting, because this hose is small,
23
it still has resistance to the water flowing through.
24
It still registers about 15 pounds of water.
25
There's an interesting point.
26
When you restrict the flow of water, increase the pressure and you know that
27
if you put your finger over the opening of your garden hose well that's more pressure
28
but it's less water and that's the same principle for
29
when you're taking a shower you have a shower head it
30
makes the water have more pressure same thing with your sink same thing like I said with the garden hose
31
so we're gonna shut this off now what you're going to see,
32
which should be interesting, this is an inch and a half line,
33
pretty much identical water pressure.
34
When I turn this on, you remember how this was spraying out?
35
This has no restriction on it.
36
That's all you're going to get out of it.
37
Because the flow of water is not being restricted, it's less pressure unless I restrict the flow.
38
Then I get more pressure.
39
You'll also notice that the gauge went down to zero.
40
Why did it go down to zero?
41
because there's no restriction on the flow of water.
42
The gauge drops to zero.
43
Three-quarter inch hose, it drops to about 15 because the garden hose is still restricting the flow.
44
So that's the beginnings of the difference between pressure and volume.
45
If you have a three-quarter inch line, you're not going to service your home, even though it looks like more pressure.
46
An inch and a half line, you could have a three-family home.
47
So what we're going to do is, you think same pressure, it should fill up a water bottle in the identical amount of time.
48
Except for the difference in gallons per minute that the inch and a half line will provide, the flow.
49
So this is the live part of the demonstration, a little bit of an unscientific demonstration, but I think it'll show that a lot of people,
50
a lot of folks out there, if pressure is the same, the amount of water is the same.
51
This is the definitive, a definitive test to just easily show you, not true.
52
We'll give the 3 quarter inch line a bit of a head start
53
and we'll see what it takes to fill the water bottle.
54
Inch and a quarter line, I'm going to get a little wet.
55
I'm going to get real wet.
56
Look at the difference.
57
Look at the difference.
58
Over double, over double.
59
Same water pressure, over double the amount of water.
60
Okay so from these simple demonstrations you should clearly understand that the gallons per minute,
61
the flow rate, that's what increases and improves your quality of life.
62
You have enough water, enough water for all your fixtures.
63
Pressure is a separate and distinct issue.
64
It's not usually the problem you're going to deal with.
65
this should really clearly be an example as to why that's true.
66
Thank you for listening and I hope that helped you out there.
