1
Hello IELTS students from all areas of the globe, I'm your IELTS tutor Jack and welcome back to another episode of the IELTS plus English podcast.
2
A much calmer subject today, we can relax, we're talking about shopping.
3
No science today, just shopping.
4
Now I'm not a big fan of shopping
5
but certainly it's a subject I can talk about and it's of course something we all do.
6
Now something you should all do is go to www.jax-english.com to get your free handout.
7
10 vocabulary and expressions and 6 key questions
8
that come up in the IELTS and I will be dealing with today in this episode.
9
and I think we've got such an easy topic I'm going to give myself
10
that challenge again I'm going to try and include all vocabulary
11
and expressions throughout today's episode and if I include one you will hear this sound
12
that means I included one of them
13
so you can check it on the list you can tick it on the list
14
if I did it
15
and fingers crossed fingers crossed I can get all 10 vocabulary
16
expressions into my answers we won't waste any more time today
17
we are going to get straight into part one question one
18
how do you feel about shopping i'm not a huge fan of shopping i sometimes uh go
19
and you know food shopping clothes shopping whatever i need to
20
do i certainly don't go window shopping i think that's for
21
people who really like to do shopping in their free time but
22
when it comes to big purchases such as tvs phones cars whatever it is i do like to shop around
23
and make sure i get the best deal
24
and best product good okay there's two already what types of shops do you use regularly
25
when it comes to online shops i i use these kind
26
of amazon type shops a lot these are shop online stores
27
that have a lot of categories and products i think we all use something like
28
that in our country korea it's coupang for me personally i love coupang
29
and when it comes to brick
30
and mortar stores then i like to go to the supermarket
31
i actually enjoy going to the supermarket i don't know why i love looking at the food i guess
32
and uh i do love buying food
33
so yeah those two okay um part two is describe your favorite shop uh
34
so i'm going to put two minutes on the clock
35
and my time starts now i'd like to tell you about costco
36
when i was young I always liked going to the supermarket.
37
I love looking at food.
38
As I grew up, I enjoyed looking at wine, cheese.
39
I just love having all the different products in one place.
40
So, you know, when I was young and I lived in England, I would go to Tesco.
41
Tesco was my favorite store.
42
It's huge.
43
the prices are very good they have a wonderful range of
44
products yeah it's somewhere i really like to spend time even as a teenager i genuinely enjoyed it
45
so let me tell you a little more about costco costco
46
is i suppose you would call it a supermarket um it
47
it carries products in bulk you have to buy in bulk
48
so you do tend to get some interesting products at a
49
knockdown price um it's i like going there to to look
50
at the the butcher section the bakery um the again the wine i do like to see
51
that and uh yeah it's it's a really fun place to go with with decent quality food
52
and very fresh products for me personally i go there once
53
a month approximately you do need to have a membership to be to be a part of costco
54
and to go there and sometimes i go on kind of shopping sprees i'll go there
55
and and really go around and buy lots of things
56
and end up spending far too much money i would say it's my favorite shop
57
because of you know you can buy very interesting products from other countries
58
and in bulk and in good prices
59
so in the future i'm sure i'll spend
60
so much more time there it's uh okay good
61
that wasn't bad i'll tell you what my problem was what I recommend my students
62
when you do a part two and I'll talk about this later in more depth but basically
63
when you talk about the past talk about something very personal to you
64
really focus on your own experience and that's what I did today as you heard
65
but when you move to the description section i really recommend you focus on being a bit more general
66
and talk about the thing so in in the thing
67
that you're focusing on in this case it was costco i
68
think i should have spent more time talking about the layout
69
the size the staff the types of products in more depth instead of
70
that i moved away and i kind of came back to my own habits
71
and experience and it made it a little hard to reach the two minutes
72
if you make sure the past
73
and description sections are as different as possible it makes it easier to add more depth
74
and more information and therefore reach two minutes now i won't take your time in this podcast episode
75
if you want more information on this please check out my
76
youtube i have a very in-depth video on part two
77
so go and check that out
78
but um yeah i i felt i could have done better
79
um okay part three why do you think some people purchase
80
things they do not need i think one of the main
81
uh causes of purchasing something you don't want is through impulse buys uh we go somewhere we stand in line
82
or something like that and we see something we like
83
and okay i'll buy it suddenly and and
84
and that's called an impulse buy or impulse purchase
85
and that's a great way to buy something you don't actually want
86
and you go home and you experience buyer's remorse meaning
87
that you regret it
88
so I think impulse buys are a big reason also another
89
reason we we buy things we don't want is addiction being a shopaholic you end up buying things
90
that you really didn't want okay I don't know how I'm doing
91
how am i doing with these vocabulary expressions i think i've
92
covered quite a lot um you will know it's hard for
93
me to keep track now let's do another question to what
94
extent do you think advertising affects the way people shop i think that advertising has a couple of different
95
effects on the way we shop number one it causes us to buy things we don't want
96
that's a problem on the other hand it can introduce top-notch products to us
97
that perhaps we weren't aware of it adds options to what we're with considering
98
so that's a good thing um
99
but as i mentioned in my previous answer a big effect uh is these impulse buys
100
which are a problem for some people me included uh for me last week for For example,
101
I went to the store and I saw this chocolate on sale.
102
It was next to the counter.
103
I bought it.
104
It was an impulse buy and I regretted it later on.
105
Good.
106
Okay, just a quick note there.
107
If you don't have enough content in your answer, add your own personal experience like I did.
108
I often say, last week I did something.
109
That's a good way to extend your answer.
110
final question today i think we still have some vocabulary to include
111
how have shopping habits changed over recent years i think one of the biggest uh ways
112
that shopping habits have changed is transparency of price um
113
because we can see everything on the internet now um in the past i remember uh We could haggle in some shops,
114
particularly at the market.
115
But nowadays, because all the prices are pretty clear, you don't haggle so much because we know it's a good price or not.
116
So haggling has decreased, I would say.
117
Apart from that, we do a lot of online purchases.
118
That's a really big effect of the Internet and smartphones.
119
and perhaps because of that we are buying more than we used to
120
and perhaps buying more exorbitant products
121
that we shouldn't do okay i i sneaked in the word exorbitant at the end there
122
which means too expensive beyond what we can afford but i believe that was all 10 vocabulary and expressions
123
so i hope you enjoyed today's topic shopping uh
124
and i hope you have a fantastic week remember i really appreciate it
125
if you like subscribe comment
126
and i will chat to you in the comment section i always do
127
and have a wonderful week i'll see you next week bye

What You'll Learn from This IELTS Shopping Topic Video

This clip is a goldmine for IELTS speaking practice, focusing on two key skills: expanding topic-specific vocabulary and structuring natural responses. You’ll learn to discuss shopping habits—from daily errands to big purchases—using phrases like "shop around" and "knockdown price," which are critical for scoring well in Part 1 and 2. Additionally, the tutor models how to transition smoothly between ideas, a skill examiners love. By the end, you’ll feel confident tackling shopping-related questions with fluency and precision.

Listen For These Sounds: Connected Speech in Action

Pay close attention to how the speaker links words and reduces sounds, a hallmark of native English. For example, "I'm not a huge fan" becomes "I'm na huge fan" with a subtle link between "not" and "a." You’ll also hear reductions like "don't go" turning into "don' go" and "what types of" blending to "wha types a." These nuances are key to improving your English pronunciation and making your speech sound more natural. Practice shadowing—repeating the dialogue aloud as you listen—to internalize these patterns.

Say It Like a Native: Rhythm and Stress Tips

To mirror the speaker’s rhythm, focus on stressing content words like "shopping," "bulk," and "deal," while softening function words like "the" and "to." Notice how the tutor pauses slightly before key points, such as when introducing "big purchases," to emphasize importance. This pacing creates a conversational flow that’s easy to follow. For shadowspeak practice, replay short sections and mimic the stress and intonation exactly. Over time, this will help you sound more confident and native-like, a crucial factor in IELTS speaking success. Remember: shadow speech isn’t just about repetition—it’s about capturing the music of the language.
