1
One man, one engine.
2
Mercedes-Benz top trim vehicles are bestowed with a three-letter badge that signifies power, prestige, and performance.
3
It's called AMG.
4
AMG stands for Ulfricht, Milka, and Grossespada, two engineers in hometown where it all started.
5
Early years of AMG were engineering and developing race engines for Daimler-Benz, and as their reputation grew, there was a demand beyond racing engines to complete cars and packages for Benz models.
6
In 1986, AMG would get world-ride recognition for their E-Class nickname, the Hammer, which at the time was the world's fastest sedan.
7
After partnering with Benz in 1990, some of the most legendary German sedans, coupes, and SUVs have been produced with that three-letter badge.
8
But what makes an AMG an AMG is the engine.
9
The first joint AMG and Benz vehicle you saw was the C36 AMG with the 3.6 liter M104.
10
This engine was a hand-built board and stroke version of the 2.8 liter M104 engine found in the C280.
11
It received a 3.5 liter diesel crankshaft with bump the displacement up to 3.6 liters
12
and the AMG specific intake camshaft with increased lift, forged pistons and a larger sleeve and compression was bumped from 10.0 to 1 to 10.5 to 1.
13
You had a computer ported, which we now know today as CNC ported cylinder head with sodium filled exhaust valves.
14
This engine could propel an unrestricted C36 AMG to up to 170 miles an hour on the Autobahn
15
and set the tone for engines to come.
16
Next you have the M119 V8.
17
This engine was found in the E50 and E60 AMGs and also the SL60.
18
It was a robust V8 that was a pretty revolutionary engine for its time with an aluminum alloy block, dual overhead cam, four valve per cylinder alloy heads
19
that featured variable valve timing up to 20 degrees for good idle quality and mid-range power.
20
Forged connecting rods with coated pistons, and it was available in three different displacements from 4.2 liter,
21
5 liter, and 6 liter configurations with the max output of 375 horsepower for the later 6 liter variant.
22
This same engine in 5 liter race trim with twin turbos power the Sauber C9, which won the 1989 24 hours of Le Mans,
23
which solidified the M119 in legendary AMG status.
24
Next we have the M113 and M113K VH used in the C43 AMG and the 55 AMG series of cars.
25
AMG stroked the 5.0L M113s to 5.4L with the forged crankshaft,
26
forged connecting rods, and the M113K for compressor has beefier pistons
27
that are disched to lower the compression from 11 to 1
28
to 9 to 1 since it has a 2.1L twin screw supercharger on top, making around 11 pounds of boost.
29
The compressor engines have different camshafts for more exhaust duration, which is paramount on boosted engines.
30
The M113K specifically is a very tuner-friendly engine.
31
With just pulley swaps and fueling, you can provide over 550 wheel horsepower in these cars.
32
An even higher output version of the M113K was the M155.
33
It was found in the SLR McLaren.
34
It produced more boost pressure.
35
It had a more efficient intercooler design.
36
It was a closed-deck block to better handle the cylinder pressure near the deck surface, and it also had dry some oiling.
37
What replaced the M113K was the M156 in the 63 series of AMG cars.
38
This was a pure AMG design which means that it wasn't a modified Mercedes Benz engine before, rather it was AMG design from the ground up.
39
The M156 went back to dual overhead cam
40
and variable valve timing like the M119 and included a closed deck engine block like the SLR McLaren.
41
In later M156s, you could option a performance package
42
that included lightweight crankshaft and upgraded rods and forged pistons from the SLS AMG.
43
This engine was initially met with some criticism since the previous M113K was supercharged
44
and and made an immense amount of low end torque.
45
But with the higher revving and lighter and more nimble M156 quickly gathered its own legendary status within the AMG enthusiast.
46
An even higher performance version of the M156 was the M159 and it debuted in the SLS AMG.
47
It had reinforced engine block with a dry sump oiling system, an anti-friction coating on the cam buckets.
48
It gave it longevity at high RPMs and had a revised velocity stack intake which helped high RPM flow.
49
In the SLS AMG Black Series, This engine produced 622 naturally aspirated horsepower, which at the time was a record for a road legal production V8.
50
Now the replacement for the M156 was the M157, which powered all 63 AMG models except the C63.
51
This engine wasn't a pure AMG design, rather it was built off of the M278 engine family.
52
This marked the return of factory force induction like the M113K, but now it was twin gear at turbochargers feeding this 5.5 liter V8 engine.
53
This saw the introduction of direct injection in an AMG engine
54
and allowed higher boosted compression of 10 to one compared to the M113K's nine to one.
55
This engine wasn't a high RPM screamer, rather it was a more torquey replacement,
56
which in later SL63 trim made 664 pound feet of torque which was diesel like.
57
It featured a forged crankshaft and forged rods with hyper eutectic pistons and air to water intercooling system, which was very efficient at the time.
58
And this was a great bed for tuning with reflashes alone these cars were adding over a hundred horsepower
59
and a hundred torque over the base engine specs.
60
The next evolution of AMG V8 engine was the M177.
61
This replaced the M157 in the 63 AMG lineup
62
and this was a smaller displacement 4.0L V8 with a hot V turbo configuration, which helps spool the turbocharger quicker.
63
In the C63 and GL63 applications, the turbos are single scrolled, whereas in the E63S and S63,
64
they are twin scroll turbos with higher boost levels all the way up to 22 pounds of boost
65
and 603 horsepower and 677 pound-feet of torque, which is just absolutely insane.
66
Both variants are closed-deck engine blocks with fully forged rotating assemblies.
67
A high output track version called the M178 was used in the AMG GTR and Black Series, which featured dry sump lubrication,
68
and the GTR compression was reduced to 9.5 to 1 to accommodate more boost pressure reliably,
69
and the Black Series received revised turbochargers and a flat plane crank
70
and a higher rev limit to the result of 720 horsepower, and when released, was the fastest factory road car around the Nurburgring.
71
This will most likely be the last V8 engine by AMG, as the new C63s will receive turbocharged inline fours with hybrid assist.
72
Now there's a vast amount of other AMG engines like the hand assembled M133 turbo four cylinder in the 845 AMG,
73
the M275 twin turbo V12 that was an absolute torque monster,
74
the M112K which was supercharged then it was found in the C32 AMG and the Chrysler Crossfire.
75
And then there's also the turbo AMG engines that aren't hand built in a Falterbach
76
that are in the 43 and 53 AMG variants of more recent cars.
77
And I think it's safe to say whatever direction AMG takes in the future, they're still gonna be building completely badass vehicles.
78
So hope you guys enjoyed this video.
