Shadowing-Übung: 4 Language Habits That Get You Fluent English FAST - Englisch Sprechen Lernen mit Video

1
Most people think that you need to move abroad to become fluent in English.
2
But that's not true.
3
The country doesn't make you fluent.
4
What you do while you're there does.
5
And the good news is you can do that exact thing from your bedroom.
6
In this video, I'll show you the four-level system so that you can reach fluency at home without booking a single flight.
7
So why do people move abroad?
8
Because it does work.
9
I mean, people do go to other countries and they come back speaking better.
10
That's a fact.
11
But it's not the country that changes you.
12
It's what the country makes you do.
13
When you're surrounded by English, you listen more.
14
You copy how people speak.
15
You practice every day because you actually have to.
16
But this is something that anyone can do because it's just a system.
17
And because it's just a system, you can do this anywhere.
18
I've seen people live in England for years and sometimes they barely improve.
19
And that's because they stayed inside their bubble.
20
I've also heard people who've never left their homes sound completely natural in English, because they built the immersion themselves.
21
And this isn't just my opinion, there's real science behind this.
22
Researchers have found that the brain learns language the best when it's exposed to it constantly, and when you can understand most of what you hear.
23
So there's a name for this, and it's called comprehensible input.
24
Basically, if you hear enough English that you mostly understand, then your brain starts picking up the patterns naturally.
25
So that means that without studying, the grammar, the rhythm, the phrases will all start to stick naturally without you even trying to memorize them.
26
That's what immersion does, and that is what we're going to build today.
27
So level one is build your immersion.
28
This is the foundation, so without this, nothing else works.
29
So I want you to think of yourself like this sponge.
30
Right now, if you only hear English when you study or during lessons, then you're like a dry sponge sitting on the counter.
31
And you might get a few drops of English here and there, but you're not absorbing that much English.
32
Now, watch what happens when I put the sponge in the water.
33
It soaks up everything.
34
And that's exactly what immersion is going to do for your English.
35
So your job for level one is simple.
36
You just need to put yourself in the water.
37
That means change your phone to English, watch TV in English, listen to podcasts in English, follow English accounts on social media.
38
Just try and fill your daily life with it.
39
So English stops being something that you study and starts being something that you're just experiencing.
40
But here's the problem.
41
When you start watching content in another language, it can get frustrating fast.
42
When I was learning Japanese, which I'm still learning by the way, I used to watch TV shows and I'd try to pick things up, but I'd hear a word I didn't know,
43
pause the show, try to look it up in the dictionary and figure out what I'd heard, and by the time I got back to the show, I'd completely lost the plot.
44
So Migaku is the tool I wish I'd had back then, and they are kindly sponsoring this video.
45
It's a browser extension that turns your browser into a language learning superpower across Netflix,
46
YouTube, Disney Plus, and even sites like Reddit.
47
Migaku lets you instantly translate words and phrases,
48
get in-depth grammar explanations, and create personal flashcards directly from what you're watching.
49
You can click any word you don't understand and get an instant definition with natural pronunciation.
50
And if you want to remember it, one click creates a flashcard with the audio, a screenshot of the show, and the definition.
51
Zero typing needed.
52
And the flashcards are cool because they use scientific spaced repetition, so they're designed to remind you at the perfect time.
53
There's also a mobile app, so if you see an English menu or maybe a sign that you don't understand, you can take a photo and you can instantly turn it into a lesson.
54
You can even create flashcards from YouTube on your phone.
55
On top of that, Migaku tracks every single word that you learn
56
and is able to tell you how much of a YouTube video
57
or a Netflix show that you're going to be able to understand before you've even clicked play.
58
So if you're learning English or any of the other 10 languages that they include, check the link in the description.
59
You get 50% off the lifetime plan plus an extra month no matter what plan you choose.
60
And let's get back to the video.
61
So level two is learning actively, not passively.
62
So you've built your immersion.
63
You've got English all around you now, but here's the trap because you can surround yourself with English and still not improve.
64
And I'll show you exactly what I mean.
65
This is passive learning.
66
So let's say you put on a show in English, but maybe you're on your phone.
67
So you're not really paying attention.
68
You hear the words, but you're not really listening.
69
And the English goes straight through.
70
So the English goes straight through and you forget almost everything.
71
Okay, and then the opposite is active learning.
72
So if you're watching, you're paying attention.
73
When you hear a word you don't know, you notice it.
74
Maybe you pause, maybe you write it down, maybe you listen again.
75
But when you do this, the water stays in the bowl.
76
So you don't need to turn every show into a lesson.
77
But when you do sit down to watch a show in English, try to be present.
78
Try to listen carefully.
79
Notice phrases and just notice how people say things.
80
And if you're wondering about subtitles, use them.
81
Not your native subtitles use English subtitles.
82
A lot of people think subtitles are cheating.
83
They're not though.
84
You're connecting what you hear to how it's spelled.
85
As you improve, you can turn them off, but for now you can use them.
86
Okay, level three is shadowing.
87
So this is how you're going to start to sound natural.
88
Shadowing is where you listen to a native speaker or somebody who you want to sound like and you copy them exactly.
89
Not just the words, but also the rhythm, the tone, the speed, everything.
90
Okay, so let me show you why this works.
91
Okay, so this glass has a tea bag in it.
92
Think of this glass as the native speaker, full of flavor, their rhythm, their accent, and their way of speaking.
93
Now watch what happens when I take this tea bag out and put it into the clear water.
94
And you see how the flavor spreads?
95
This is what shadowing does.
96
So you can take their speech and their flavor and you can absorb some of it.
97
It's not bad.
98
So to do this, find somebody who's English you love.
99
A YouTuber, a podcaster, an actor.
100
Play a clip just 10 or 20 seconds long and copy it exactly.
101
If you do this for 10 minutes a day, within weeks, phrases, sentences and tone will start coming to you much more naturally.
102
Some of you might be thinking, do I really need to understand every single word before I can shadow something?
103
And the answer is no, just shadow anyway.
104
This exercise is training your mouth, not your brain.
105
So meaning can come afterwards.
106
And you might be asking, which accent should I copy?
107
And the answer is just pick one and stick with it.
108
It's going to be too confusing if you try to shadow different accents every time.
109
So make sure you just stick to one type of accent.
110
Okay.
111
And level four of our system is speak with comfort.
112
And this is the part where a lot of people get stuck, not because their English is bad, but because they freeze when they can't find the right words.
113
So let me show you exactly what I mean.
114
Okay, so let's imagine that these oranges are the perfect words.
115
These are the words that you're always searching for, but if you look closely at the cup, there's lots of gaps.
116
When you hit a gap in your speech, you stop, you freeze, and the conversation can die.
117
But watch this.
118
These rice granules are the small, simple words that you already know and that you sometimes take for granted.
119
And if you use more of these simple words,
120
you're going to fill the gaps and you're still going to be understood.
121
So you don't need every perfect word, you just need to keep going with the words that you already know.
122
And if you're a bit worried that you might sound too basic using simple words.
123
Don't worry, you won't.
124
Native speakers forget words all the time and we most of the time use very simple words and phrases.
125
The main difference is native speakers don't stop and they keep moving.
126
So that's the system.
127
Level one was build the immersion and be the sponge in the water.
128
Level two was learn actively.
129
Level three was shadowing where you absorb the flavour of native speakers.
130
And level four, speak with comfort where you let the simple words fill the gaps.
131
So you don't need a plane ticket and you don't need to move abroad, you just need a simple system and you need to stick to it.
